      Heya! Oh gosh ya. Canva is brutal for forcing everything into RGB. Even their "CMYK" isn't true CMYK. It's a tricky one! We touch on RGB to CMYK in our File Prep walkthrough but more content on it is a great idea. :) ua-cam.com/play/PLCnZzTdwY3XAzz78G8f4FxXbFd30iiaPB.html&si=8176MDb1zdZH1OAf

    how to save custom artboard size

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 20 днів тому

      Illustrator will always save the PDF the size of your document, whichever size that is. When you create a new document, just type the size in as you need to create a custom size. You can also edit afterwards using Document Setup in the File Menu or the Artboard tool to edit artboard size.

    Why aren't selections recorded? I had a bunch of documents that needed some logos and text replaced, the same ones on each document. I selected the things that needed to be deleted and deleted them. This doesn't get recorded, only the CLEAR command, so it tells me "CLEAR not available". How can I make this work? It seems like a simple find and replace action.

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 20 днів тому

      Ya unfortunately, Illustrator Actions can’t record selections, only main commands like CLEAR. It's because they try to make them more usable on a general scale. You would just need to select objects first and then run the action to get them to clear those items. You could also try Illustrator’s Find and Replace for text or consider using scripts to automate logo/text swaps across multiple files.

    How do you move the number to the bottom? Your whole menu changes from the justification and I have now idea how to find it on my screen.

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 20 днів тому

      The number would just be in a text box so you can move around with your mouse, but if you're looking for the align tool more often, you can go to Window>Object & Layout>Align. Then you can take that lil align window and drag it to your sidebar to have it there permanently. Let me know if you're talking about something different than that.

    Hey, what’s your best tip to convert cmyk to pantone color. Suppose we have a cmyk color on illustrator and we need to march the closest PMS

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 20 днів тому

      Hey there, so the Pantone Connect tool is best for finding the closest Pantone match to your CMYK. You can enter CMYK and then it'll give you options to choose from with conversion values. Always best to double check with an actual physical guide in front of you. Pantone's never look the same as what's on screen. If you don’t have access to either of those, chatting with a local print shop would be next recommendation. They typically have the software and they'll have Pantone books that you can borrow to get the most accurate conversions. Hope that helps!!

    why would you not use the documents built in bleed?

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 20 днів тому

      Since the labels have rounded corners, using the built in bleed would show the bleed lines as straight where using a custom bleed better represents it and doesn't cause confusion.

    • @erikswanson3441
      @erikswanson3441 17 днів тому

      @@PrintDesignAcademy yea but i do not even think that would matter because its a "bleed." the die line is still going to exist the way it is. it will be cut rounded. The bleed is simply to make sure any sort of inaccuracy is covered by the designs colors.

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 2 місяці тому

      When you say 'preset lines' are you talking about the rounded corner dieline? If you are producing a straight label without rounded corners then you set up your file at the start with 0.125 inch of bleed on every side. Design your artwork to the bleed (outside the artboard) Then when you go to export the PDF in the Marks + Bleed settings, 1. Click Trim (Crop) Marks 2. check the box "Use Document Bleed Settings"

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 2 місяці тому

      Great point! A TIFF is the best for high quality images as they are uncompressed (unlike JPGs.) They can however create really large file sizes. I like to use TIFFs on projects where the image is really large coverage like a full page. JPGs are usually fine for smaller sizes.

      You can double click into your swatches and adjust the levels any time. By process black, do you mean rich black so C:30 M:30 Y:30 K:100 to true black of K:100? If so, it'd just be changing the swatches and making sure your black graphics are all set to that. By default the black is usually K:100 anyway. (other than in Illustrator if the file isn't set to the PRINT section when you create it. It'll be an RGB black trying to convert to CMYK which is wild and will need to be manually changed to CMK:0 K:100)

While I don’t apply this method to every project, I always use phased pricing for annual reports, websites, and logo designs-it’s the only approach that makes sense to me for those types of work.

    You dont say anything about actual ppi and effective ppi...and btw, we cant se anything on the screen for those numbers they are to small on Youtbe. So if you dont talk about them, we wont know. Everyone says it's the effective ppi that should be at 300 not the actual ppi. But after you relink the images and resize them in photoshop, you never mention their effective ppi... ? And the print ready file checklist only says '300 ppi image'. It wont mention the difference with actual ppi and effective ppi...

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 2 місяці тому

      So I do touch upon effective vs actual at the 2 min mark. I do get what you're saying that yes, you would want the effective dpi/ppi to be 300. What I am also teaching though is resizing the dimensions of your image to roughly match the size of what you have in the design which then makes both the actual and effective dpi 300 since it's true to size. We'll take your note on for the checklist though. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • @thecallofthealley
    @thecallofthealley 3 місяці тому

    Hi, great video!!! It should be simple but I have got a puzzle here... I am making a design for a t-shirt. 4500x5100 pixels. I had an image from mid journey that is not high enough in resolution. So I used an AI upscale, to 22272x29568. Should be good enough! I then resized that image in photoshop to 4500x5974 (because of its different shape, I would crop later). Saved it. In indesign created a document of 4500x5100 with small margins, placed the image but it shows very small. The actual ppi is 300 and the effective ppi is also 300. But the image does NOT fill the size of the frame. in the transform panel it shows 100% for both the width and height but at 1080x1433 even if I did save the image from photoshop at 4500x5974. I did check the resample box, selected the resolution 300 and then clicked the chain link to unlink and rewrite the right dimensions to keep the resolution of 300... before saving the image! I thought that in Indesign it would be directly the same size as the document given the same dimensions or almost of both. it seems that my image should be slightly larger than the frame actually... But now I'm not sure anymore. I tried fitting options; they all lower my effective ppi. when I try to resize the image, with fitting options or manually holding command shift it downgrades my effectif ppi. I can't find a video on youtube explaining why and how to fix this. Spent 3 h with GPt and still don't have a solution... I dont understand why in the transform it shows that the placed image is 1080x1433px (100% by 100%) when in the other section the dimensions show clearly 4500x5974px with actual ppi 300 and effective ppi 300. Why are the dimensions different? It should be simple. I set the right size in photoshop, save. Place that image in a document with the same size in indesign and bingo? Anyone know where is the problem and the solution that goes along with…? Thanks

    Thank you for this video! It's so helpful and easy to understand. I have a question. Is it possible to have two "section" tittles on a page? Like the main chapter tittle and name of smaller sections within that chapter? I hope that makes sense...

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 2 місяці тому

      Okay so unfortunately not exactly, but there is a way you can use 'Section Prefix' within the Page Numbering section. It will always be in front of your Page # though without spaces so you'll have to add a dash or something to separate them. It also now is a part of the page number so will always show that page # as such in PDFs. ex. [ Pg Hello-6 ]. You could just create a Parent Page for each Chapter where the text is on it as a regular text heading, then use the section marker wherever you need. Assign the Chapter Parent Page to that full chapter (you can use 'Apply to pages' to do it in bulk) and then it allows you to change the section markers as needed within that chapter. Hope that makes sense!!

    • @PrintDesignAcademy
      @PrintDesignAcademy 2 місяці тому

      okayyyy actually! You could also use something called Running Header in Text Variables. I'm not familiar with it, but looked into it a bit. I think it auto recognizes your largest header on the page and then can be added to a parent page and it'll continue the header for you until the next header switches. I'm not sure how it determines the header so you might need to trial and error. But look up: Type > Text Variables > Running Header (then the internet might have some further insight on how it picks the header)

      Okay! Yes there's a sneaky way you could. Create 2 Parent Page options. One with Previous Page Number and then one that is your no Page #s. Your page 1 would have to be done manually but then starting on page 3 it should grab Pg # 2 and then that should would work moving forward. (I did however try to do this on my end and it wasn't grabbing the previous page # and just showing the current one?? Not sure if it's a glitch on my end so still suggesting it since that would be the way that makes the most sense to me.) Then you could go "apply Parent to pages" and then ask AI to create a text followed by comma you could copy paste list of 1,3,5,7,9...all the way to 500 so you can paste into that "apply parent.." box. - Hope it works for you. let me know if not and I can help you troubleshoot some more :)

    Is there a way to change the order of the page numbers? From ascending to descending? 🥺

      Shoot that's a tough one, but basically there isn't an easy built in way to set them to descending. You could do a Data Merge at the very start on blank pages where you have an .csv file (excel) that has 1 column with your numbers descending (but you'd need to know the exact final page count) and then choose a text box for your where the Data Merge where the page # will be. You won't be able to do this after you've designed on them already unfortunately. It'd have to be done at the very start and even then if you wanted to move the location around, you'd have to do it individually on the pages. Up to you! Or just swap order in PDFs after you're done. Might be an auto way in Acrobat afterwards.

    Hi, I am thankful to find you today... how can I export two artboards that will be printed separately, however will be placed on the wall together to look as one.

    • @PrintDesignAcademy

      You can have the two artboards side-by-side and just export them regularly as a 2 page PDF. If you want to have some overlap on each design, just have each artboard overlap a little bit on the insides. Something like this: [ { ] }
