I remeber riding on that ship a few times in my youth.

I had a man in the pilot house asked me if I wanted to steer...was tooscared and said NO.
That was always the first place I went when I would get on the boat I can still smell the engine room! I miss them boats

We'd go on countless night cruises on these boats when I was a kid. I was mesmerized by looking down into the engine room. This video is scarier than the Exorcist! LOL!!
I've spent much time as a kid leaning over that railing in amazement. When we were close to docking I would run down there so I could see those "piston arms" stop, reverse and start again.
I remember the engine room when I was young it was ver hot when you walked pass I was around 9 years old
A great silent video on one of the most elegant steamboats to ever come from the T.S. Marvel Shipyards in Newburgh, New York. I'm delighted to have been able to build models of all the famed Hudson River Day Line steamers; especially the most recent one of HENDRICK HUDSON...rex.stewart.blogspot.com .
This was always the most fascinating part
As I understand it, there are only TWO ships that have this type engine, the pistons go up and down but the props are horizontal. One ship is the Columbia the other is the Seaguin sailing in Lake Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. I've been on both
The difference between these shots of the pistons and the Titanic movie? These shots aren't CGI.
I can remember as a kid one summer day aboard the boblo boat Columbia , we were underway from Detroit to the island and I was touring the boat, watching the engine running when the man came up and invited me down to the engine room, what a thrill that was, I am 68 years old and I remember it like it was yesterday, thanks for the memories Joe Verosto
Seemed that powerful arm was the arm of God growing up. Viewing that engine was better than the park, to me. Another memory was the sound...couldn't hear each other as we leaned over the viewing rail; and being scared the vibrations would make us fall into the engine pit..
Ohhh the smell!!! Reminded me of 'Liquid Wrench' when I was a kid - that's my best comparison ….
ill never forget that awesome smell of the engine room.
Same here and I still miss it
This is a great example of not appreciating what you have. As a child I rode all the Dayliners I think and just assumed they would always be a fixture on the Hudson. Now they're gone and there is precious-little left in the way of video or even still photos of them.
Yes, we are a Society that take our treasures for granted @masm60. However, I'm working with Legislators to produce accurate models of the early and Hudson River Day Line vessels so that those who are still with us (and their families) can enjoy seeing these detailed works. My blog features some of the beautiful vessels of that heyday period of steamboating...rex-stewart.blogspot.com .
I enjoyed viewing this video of the ALEXANDER HAMILTON engine. Some twenty years ago the Circle Line was to commission a model from me of the earlier Dayliner WASHINGTON IRVING for display on one of their vessels. never heard anything from it. It was good to know that this company bought the interest of both A.H. and PETER STUYVESANT during the '60s. I am probably the only modelmaker who have built the principle vessels of the fleet in detail. Kudos to our region for promoting such boats.
Nice clip. When I was 11 years old (1971), my grandmother and I took a trip on the Day Line up to Bear Mountain Park. I vividly remember going to the engine room and seeing that magnificent engine at work. Little did I know that the Alexander Hamilton would soon become part of history. What I wouldn't give to relive that day!
I used to ride these when I was very young. Loved it!
Was it the ALEXANDER HAMILTON? ...rex-stewart.blogspot.com/2011/10/steamboat-model-alexander-hamilton.html .
@@RexStewartoriginals That's a fine model, Rex. I'm going to be shooting a documentary this weekend about the Hendrick Hudson and I'll be on the river.
@@PartTimeExplorer , great to know...I subscribed to your channel so that when this documentary surface I will put it to my collectors/followers.
Great view of the engine. I have a slideshow that includes the Hamilton and other New York Steamers on my channel. I remember always taking this boat to Bear Mountain
If possible one should be placed on here about the Hudson River Day Line Steamer Alexander Hamilton since that is the last of the great Day Liners.
I believe we have it in the youtube feed @alan wasenius.
