Shortly after my mother finished six months of cancer treatment, we sat down together to record some of our more meaningful and memorable family stories. Two and a half years later, I'm finally sharing the third story in the series, this one focusing on a major incident in my grandfather's childhood. Intro and conclusion filmed at the Still Waters retreat center in Buchanan, MI (www.stillwaters...
PART 2: A Slow Reflection on Grief (and Photography) on the Manistee River Trail (4K)

As the one-year anniversary neared-one year since losing my dad-I spent a weekend in the Seaton Creek Campground, where I took time to gather and share my thoughts. This is a very slow journal of sorts, a semi-random collection of my reflections on my dad, his camera, loss, and grief. It's a pretty rough cut, so issues with lighting, sound, and framing are left nearly as-is. And like Peter Roll...

I had the privilege of spending a day with my dad recording his creativity on the piano. The day's pieces will slowly go up on his channel (link below), so here I'll just share the first from the session - Time Suite. Here is how Dad describes it: "In 2020 and 2021 [my wife] had a successful bout with cancer, but going through the process one cannot be sure. I approach challenges with composing...

This is all b-roll for a project I'm working on about my dad, but I thought I'd share it here as a standalone meditation. This was shot during our family vacation in southwest Michigan. Nothing was staged; I just followed my dad around with our Sony a6000 and kit lens while he went for an early morning paddle shoot, run ahead on the shore, shoot, run ahead.... The light kept changing from diffu...

Testing the Clippy EM272 Mono + Roland R-07 (Also: Shure SM58 & iPhone)

In this video I sample the Clippy EM272 omnidirectional mic with water sounds, voice, and sounds around the home and neighborhood. I briefly compare the Clippy with the built-in mic on my iPhone 11 (used to shoot this) and also the mics on the Roland R-07 and the Shure SM58 (why not). I was told the cable I used with the two SM58s was custom made by Gotham Sound; I bought it on eBay. Naturally,...

While on vacation this summer, my dad and I collaborated on a project to tell the story of his Knabe grand piano. This is a story of parental devotion and a child taking full advantage of a blessing bestowed. It's a story I grew up with, and a story I wish to pass on to the next generation in the family as well as with others. May we each be encouraged to invest in others, to help them achieve ...

Kalamazoo River (Calkins/Allegan Dam - M89)

We started at the boat ramp below Calkins Dam*, and we got out at the M89 access (~4 miles). See "A Paddling Guide to the Kalamazoo River Watershed" (Daniel Burton, 2015), pages 39-40. *Google Maps calls this the "Allegan Dam River Boat Ramp."

    Hey I happens to see this good video from you and I’m interested about the SM58 test, you just connect the two SM58 with a 3.5mm to XLR cable, anything in between? Thanks and have a good day!

    • @jeff_boyd
      @jeff_boyd 4 місяці тому

      Right, that's it! And I had a split cable that brought the two XLR cables down to a single 3.5mm. That way one mic went to the left channel, and the other to the right. Worked pretty well, I thought.

    I'm a big Clippy/Pluggy fan. I prefer the audio on the footage using that mic. Regarding wind protection: the Bubblebee removes an amazing amount of high frequency. My feeling is, that's mabye OK for voice over -- with a bit of boost in post -- which seems to be your main point of evaluation. When it comes to 'pure' environmental sound and bubbling brooks in particular? I'm dithering myself with how much wind I should keep versus wind I discard. If it comes at the expense of a lively recording of water or leaves or wind in the trees or other 'noisy' elements in the landscape, maybe it's too much. There's always wind or breeze outside and we become accustomed to it; it's subliminal but it contributes. I hope in the mean time you've acquired another Clippy and done some AB nature work. Inside there's no wind so the only challenge is figuring out how close and how much gain to get what you want/need. I like a bit of "room" in the recordings I make of my household stuff -- metal or ceramic bowls are the best!

      Do you mean the mic is detachable from the cable, or do you mean from the microphone housing? It seems pretty solidly attached, but maybe someone else here could answer better than me.

    I have a stereo matching pair of Clippy's and the Roland 7 as well. Its a brilliant combo. I can afford to buy the expensive gear but the cost to extra quality difference isn't worth it in my opinion. Also I like the challenge of getting the best from the gear I buy rather than just buying the best with no challenge.

    • @jeff_boyd
      @jeff_boyd Рік тому

      I agree, a solid combo! I still haven't purchased a matching pair, but I plan to. And I really like that approach of making the most of what you have. I used to work for a small nonprofit that had the mantra -- "Do much with little." That has stayed with me. Thanks for your comment here!

    • @jeff_boyd
      @jeff_boyd 2 роки тому

      I don't remember now how long it took us. I'm looking in a guidebook for an estimate, but I'm not sure I'm reading it correctly. I'm looking on pages 39-40 in "A Paddling Guide to the Kalamazoo River Watershed" (Daniel Burton, 2015), and it looks like this stretch (Calkins Dam to M89) is only 4 miles. But my memory is that we were on the river more than the hour or two that 4 miles would normally take us with three of us in the inflatable boat with just me paddling. But maybe I just remember it as longer because we were cold. :)

    Nature recordings in mono is like watching with just one eye! In mono recordings there are so many informations missed - it just makes no sense to do this. We are listening with two ears and if you use only one mic you are loosing more than just 50%.

    • @jeff_boyd
      @jeff_boyd 2 роки тому

      Yeah, that makes sense for sure. I originally bought this mic because sometimes I want a little ambient sound with video projects, and I wondered if this cheap mic had the capacity to sound better than using my R-06 or R-26 external mics or if I'd need to go with a more expensive setup to get a quality I was satisfied with. So I wanted to see how this would sound in a variety of applications (thus all the sections to the video, and I should have done more, like at a coffee shop or restaurant). And I wasn't sure what I'd think about the capsule, so I wanted to listen to it before investing in a matched set of this or Lom or better mics. But 100%, if I do more nature recording, I'll purchase a matched set of some mic for stereo recording. Totally agree.
