Please allow me to correct some mistakes. The media you use has too much organic matter. The fertile soils in the jungle have only 3-5% of organic matter. We should mimic that to prevent root rot. The issue is NOT over watering, but it is due to too much organic matter in the media. To fix this, you need to have 90-95% inert/inorganic media with the rest being organic (rice hulls or compost). Peatmoss is better than Rice hulls because while it is organic, it does not decompose as fast as rice hulls. So you could add play with the percentages. The media that I use for my tropical plants is: third sand, third small stones or perlite (any variety), third peat moss. And to that I add 5-10% of total volume of leaf compost or composted manure. No root rot for the past two years. Good luck.
