Aspect Ratios have been changing for the history of cinema, but where did they come from, and what are they?
The Synder Cut being 4:3 trended on social media, yet WandaVision spent half of its runtime in 4:3 and no one batted an eye. What makes them different, why are things even being formatted in 4:3 to begin with and where exactly did widescreen come from?

That Moment in WandaVision
Переглядів 2133 роки тому
Phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has kicked off with WandaVision. It's a great show and I think people should watch it, but there's a moment in episode five... The moment in episode 5 that's worth taking a closer look at. Sitcoms are great because they're incredibly accessible, which is just about the opposite of a cinematic universe. #wandavision #marvel #mcu Video Contents: 00:00 I...
Jojo vs Jojo

Jojo Rabbit is a fascinating look into the mind of a 10 year old German towards the end of the Second World War. A look into the mind of someone who's grown up surrounded by dangerous propaganda. I also take a step back to reflect on propaganda, the riot at the Capitol, radicalization via misinformation, and how people can be deradicalized without violating the first amendment. I don't have the...

The Art of the Long Take

My Two Cents: Portrait Of A Lady In Fire is a Masterpiece! Yes, the chemistry between the actresses is palpable, but the real story is the profound love the director Ce’line Sciamma has for the actress Ade’le Haenel. This is her enduring gift of love. Timeless, forever…. In an interview, Ade’le said that Celine was someone she knew over the years. Totally dismissive of their past relationship. She is too young and immature to understand how incredible this movie tribute to her is. I wish another woman would love me with such deep feelings. Anyway, the ending is bittersweet. Most Sapphic movies are. I added a postscript: Twenty years later, a newly widowed Heloise enters Maryanne’s shop to commission a portrait. Their eyes meet. Heloise, always the bolder of the two says, “ you are unchanged……, beautiful!” Happy Ending!!!!

So many people are eager to comment when somebody "breaks the (so-called) fourth wall" as if this was not only wrong but also a new thing. It is neither. Anybody who has watched Richard III or Macbeth will know that Shakespeare frequently included asides to the audience. It is a dramatic device. It was used to great effect in "House of Cards" which (as many people will know) was strongly influenced by Richard III and Macbeth.

I really liked First Reformed, but was not a fan of the score. That movie would have been far more powerful with no music (except for the church choir and hymnals).

Brilliant, near perfect analysis. Really nailed it. Ms. Waller-Bridges could scarcely have explained it better - except for one thing: the way the fourth wall (and this the season/series) ended. It's inherently part of all explained in the video, how it helps resolve her story as we watch it. I'd assume spoiler warnings would cover the ending as well.

Your analysis of Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a generous gift. I began falling in love with this film for so many reasons long before it had ended. The lack of music was one reason. Sometimes I feel that music is used to tell the viewer how one should feel but if the script, the directing, the acting and all the other elements are spot on, the viewer will elicit the intended response. In a word -Voila!

I rewatched that scene and you're right! She doesn't break it until after Belinda leaves. Belinda does fill a similar role to The Banker in season 1 as well, someone who's able to penetrate Fleabag's façade and speak to her true self. Great catch!

Well, I was wrong! He was not playing his character from the X-Men universe. But, like the clip from Full House with Little Richard, it was a bit of stunt casting. Becuase for someone like me who knows all that corporate background it is stunt casting, so I think my points still mostly work.

Sometimes things are finished at true 2.40 (1920x800), but it's really down to specific productions and delivery formats. Sometimes it's 1920x803, just because the pixel math works out to a decimal and you can't have fractional pixels. I just like saying "two-four-oh" vs "two-three-nine" but it wasn't worth getting into that more arbitrary distinction. In case you're curious, a 1920x810 (~2.37:1) window would have the exact same amount of pixels as 4:3 image on an HD monitor.

Honestly I didn't even find out that Disney acquired Fox until a while after I watched the episode, though I was aware of the Quicksilver from the X-Men movies. I think it still held significance because I recognized the face and the realization that the universes might merge slowly dawned on me. But in a way, you don't even necessarily need to know that this Quicksilver is from a different movie, just that he has a different face. But it certainly packs a different punch if you're aware of those things going in.

    • @screencheatum842
      @screencheatum842 3 роки тому

Yeah it works on a lot of levels! Which is why I think the show has stayed relatively accessible to people who aren't that well versed in the MCU. We'll see how the finale pans out, but I am sure glad I hedged a bit on Pietro possibly being just a bit of stunt casting with a non x-men explaination!

My wife didn't like "Fleabag" but I did and kept watching- (she came back), it gets better as it goes. It is just another example of how if you have great writing of everyday events you don't need expensive explosions and all kind of crazy CGI. This is just everyday life stuff- to me the talking to the audience is similar to when we talk to ourselves, when we are in the car alone don't we occasionally discuss the matters of the world? This series could keep running for a long time-

    • @screencheatum842

Selfishly, I'm cool with crazy CGI because my day job is in VFX. But yeah, great writing can trump nearly anything.

I did the same thing as eddie’s wife - bf wanted to watch it, but I found Fleabag a terrible person within fifteen minutes. Went and made dinner; it was a treat to go back and watch the first episode after binging from about episode three through season 2 (long ugly cry at the end, how we grow after grief is still new and uncomfortable for me) and guessing the season one plot twist correctly (woo!). Kinda obsessed now. It is a great piece! Appreciated channel’s analysis & subscribed. Thanks!

Really enjoyed the video. I have never seen the show but it seems like a good idea on how to break a fourth wall. Often when I've seen fourth wall breaking it's just a dumb gag, which I think is limiting, as you show the fourthwall is a tool that can be used by creators to enhance a work on a thematic level.

I was eating dinner while watching this and literally stopped everything during that moment in 1917. Really loved this vid, much like your first one - LOVE that you talk about Alfonso Cuarón, he's such a purposeful director in his shots. Children of Men was a film I studied extensively at university and despite that, I still love it dearly, so am always excited to see people's takes on it. Basically, really enjoyed this video and always excited to see more from you!
