Appalachian Fire - CAFMS
United States
Приєднався 17 лют 2016
These videos are produced by the Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers & Scientists (CAFMS). CAFMS is one of 15 knowledge exchange networks supported by the Joint Fire Science Program. Our goal is to promote communication among fire managers and scientists in the Appalachian Mountains region. CAFMS is largely successful because of a strong relationship between the U.S. Forest Service Southern Research Station and The Nature Conservancy's Fire Learning Network.
Controlled burns are new tools in our region, and a great need exists for science delivery on their benefits, drawbacks, and use. CAFMS promotes communication through workshops, web-based seminars, summaries of research publications, social media, and face-to-face meetings with CAFMS members. CAFMS members include fire managers along with government and university scientists throughout the Appalachian region; from Pennsylvania to Alabama. For more information go to www.AppalachianFire.org

Expanding the Fuels Planning Toolkit: Terrestrial Laser Scanning and 3D Fuels Characterization
Fueling Collaboration 5.3: Expanding the Fuels Planning Toolkit: Terrestrial Laser Scanning and 3D Fuels Characterization for Improved Wildland Fire Decision Support. Wildland fire managers require an expanded toolbox for decision support in the context of an increasingly novel fuel and fire environment complicated by a changing climate, invasive species encroachment, and rapid increase in wildland-urban interface in many areas within the U.S. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) offers an efficient, cost-effective, and powerful tool for characterizing high resolution, sub-canopy forest and fuel structural conditions with the simple press of a button. In this panel discussion, TLS subject matter experts from both research and operations will share their efforts and practical applications of TLS and other 3D wildland fuels characterization tools for improved wildland fire planning, fire effects monitoring, and decision support.

Prescribed Fire and Wetlands: An Important but Rarely Told Story
Переглядів 180Місяць тому
Fueling Collaboration 5.2: Wetlands are the forgotten sibling of the prescribed fire world. While upland ecosystems across the Eastern U.S. have received significant attention for their fire-dependency, wetlands-characterized by their more episodic encounters with fire-rarely receive equitable fire management investments. Fire managers face unique challenges in these environments, where hydric ...

Fueling Collaboration 4.4 - Land management programs are frequently confronted with the imperative of incorporating the most advanced scientific knowledge into their decision-making processes along with filling voids in research needed to move along effective management. Nevertheless, the persistent disparities between the realms of science and management often impede effective collaboration. I...
Fire and Water - Fueling Collaboration 3.2
Переглядів 8111 місяців тому
Changing climate is reshaping the balance of fire and water in eastern ecosystems. Drought alters soil structure and stability; combined with intense rainfall, this impacts hydrologic dynamics. This panel will explore the interconnections between fire, nutrient cycling, ecohydrology, and climate change.

Season of fire. Opening the burn window. Both of these focus on one of the elements that make up a fire regime - frequency, intensity/severity, extent/scale, and seasonality. Decades of spring-and/or autumn-centric fire can cause a site or landscape to respond very differently than when burned repeatedly across all flammable seasons. Summer burns can produce differing fire effects including inc...
The Future Is Smoky- Fueling Collaboration Panel Discussion 4 2
Переглядів 139Рік тому
With increasing wildfire activity due to changes in climate, smoke will likely become more prevalent and continue to have an effect on society. Earlier this year, smoke from Canada wildfires lowered air quality in the eastern U.S. to its worst levels in recorded history. As the climate heats up and creates drier conditions, smoky skies will grow increasingly common. Health concerns and prescrib...
Fire History as a Bridge Between Ecological Knowledge Systems - Fueling Collaboration 4.1

This panel discussion will explore how different types of fire history information (Indigenous Knowledge and physical archives), when considered together, provide improved context for understanding the ecologies and processes that are linked to the restoration and stewardship of fire-adapted communities. The panelists include Indigenous Knowledge holders and practitioners, and experts in tree-r...

This is the best and most thorough detail and data about Passenger Pigeons. Ben Novak is an amazing scientist. Enjoyable video!
Maybe they can find some DNA and reproduce the pigeon .
Thank you for this great message and support for prescribed fire in North Carolina.
Awesome job.
Thanks Michael!

WTF did I just watch? Still cant open and navigate trails in the forest after this video. Hooray I can now import maps I never heard of.
Where can you find this publication?
Thanks for this presentation. FOFEM 6.5 has been updated to include the tree mortality equations published in: Keyser, Tara L.; McDaniel, Virginia L.; Klein, Robert N.; Drees, Dan G.; Burton, Jesse A.; Forder, Melissa M. 2018. Short-term stem mortality of 10 deciduous broadleaved species following prescribed burning in upland forests of the southern US. International Journal of Wildland Fire. 27(1): 42-51. FOFEM now provides improved tree mortality estimation for the 10 species studied in the publication.
