Hi Rob I have just got my train plans most other toys Ive made has been pine would it look almost as good using pine and jarrah as I 'm not sure where to get other woods as I am new to Australia . Pete (nobbie) Simith
@@NobbieSmith Hi Nobbie, yes, I was lucky to be gifted some Tassie Blackwood, but I would not use pine as it is a softwood. Try getting hold of some Victorian Ash. That would be available a5 most timber sellers, even Bunnings. It is harder and when turning, it will give you less trouble than trying to turn hard jarrah and pine laminated together.. good luck with it all.
So much useful information I can use with other projects. Thanks!!
I really wish I could find a tutorial about how to trim the edges. I'm really struggling with it, and everyone cuts that part out.
If you look at the video at 4:27 onwards you will see how I trimmed the cork. I did exactly the same process for trimming the fabric.
@@OzWorkshop thanks 😊
Where’s part 2
Still have that template?
Hi William, no it was a one-off project for a young friend of my son. I no longer have that lathe either. I only have a midi lathe now and would struggle to replicate. Having said that, I got the original plan off the internet by researching Indian clubs. Size will depend on density of timber turned as well. You can achieve actual weight by drilling out base and filling with lead or sand. Cheers.
@@OzWorkshop Thank you sir
Awesome how to trim the fabric perfectly without some fringes?
what speed ?
What type of wood is the main body?

What color did you put in the resin at the end? Was it just a white color? I still enjoy watching this tutorial two years later. This is still one of the best I’ve found.
Gilmour11 thanks mate, yes, I put white in the clear... like floating foam
Very nice, I use the exact same Pyrography kit, awesome bit of kit that.
Thanks for sharing the process. Even in 2020 I was looking for a way to easily, and cheaply add a name upon a client's request.
I know it's 6 years later but just bought the plans. Thank you for the video
Hi David, thank you for your comment. Unfortunately this project stalled.. I may take it up again soon.
hi just come across your channel and subscribed i watched 3 videos on the iron horse train which were brilliant please tell me there are more thanks
Unfortunately the iron horse was an incomplete project. I had health issues around that date and it lapsed.. might pick it up again one day..lol
I also had the idea to put waterslide decals onto pens but I was uncertain how to make the finish. Then fortunately I found your video. Thank you very much for the helpful instructions.
It's called going off the rails.
Good idea!
Where did you get the thin saw blade?T
16 coats of ca glue is better
Seen so many ideas for plunge router lifts but this is the one I'll be making, simple and functional as it should be!
Rob, just attempted my first decal on a pen blank and had a problem getting the decal to stick. Per your suggestion, I finished the blank with CA and sanded up to 12,000 micro mesh. Tried several decals and and they all just curled up and wouldn't stick. I wondered if the blank was just too glossy? Thank, Jim
Hi Jim, I am wondering if it is the type of decal you are using. I don not think anything can be too glossy. you may have a faulty batch.. not enough stickyness.. try a decal on some thing else .. a piece of old ceramic etc..
I used the Testors Decal Paper that others have had success with. Followed their instructions but no luck. I will try one on another surface.
so much work for 1 pen what if someone ordered 1000 pens well my purpose of searching for video like this i wanted to knw how to do pens with decals. wish it was easier, plus i dont have that jig it is in and what if i was doing it on plastic pen ???
Decals will work on plastic, but you will not get the finish sealed like on wood. The process will be the same for 1 or 100, but if you did them in batches it will be easier. If you want to do on plastic, why not contact a printer. they can give you a price
Hi Rob, was that resin on the fabric? Looks lovely
Hi Sera, yes a clear resin.
Still enjoying this video! I’m wondering about a few things....did you sell this? Was this a wall art piece or a table top, or something else? I’m also wondering if I make this and fasten it to a wooden pedestal what do you think it could sell for?
Gilmour11 I have it on the wall. I made it as a coffee table, but the wife did not want one..lol. I spent about $200 on the top. Once complete I think $600-$800 if you find someone to fall in love with it.
Rob Hull Rob Hull I hope you spent $200 including the resin and thank you SO MUCH! It’s such a lovely piece!!
Merci beaucoup, Marie
What did you use for a glue to adhere the coasters to the cork?
I used spray on contact adhesive... let dry for 10 mins then stuck them together.. works a treat.
Oh WOW!!! You put me over the moon with this!! I would have given anything to be there when you did this so I could ask you questions along the way. Did you put resin over the colors before it dried? And where did you get the white mold? I LOVED THIS!!
Thank you, it has been a labour of love. in the video I give you a source for the laser cut panel ... I let each layer dry before pouring over the top
OzWorkshop oh, my apologies! I’m not sure how I missed that. I’ll take another look. I could watch this all day. This was really something!
Brilliant. Thank you very much.
Your very welcome Mariette
Thank you for that tip.
Omgoodness I didn't know to score the tape line. Such great advice!
Great tips . I watched the whole series.Just a tip the voice is too soft 😀
Margie Oliver .. I will speak up next time..lol
Gorgeous !!!
omg I love this.
Muy bonito gracias por compartir
It sure was pretty! I wish it had lasted long enough to see it dry. You can get just the clock kits from Ali Express for a couple dollars, and there are many places where you can buy round wood discs for a good price. There are also places to buy vinyl records, like thrift stores. I like the wood, because it dries faster, and you can do different sizes - the clock hands can be cut with scissors or wire cutters (jewelry pliers work well), and there are places where you can buy just clock hands in different styles.
Thanks Martha, I have my workshop, so can make a lot myself. I will come back to it..lol
Awesome video! Can you tell me the exact kind of gloss acrylic spray that you used before submerging the paper into the water?
Should the extra wood be left inside Dulcimer or is that left for tone? It looks great.
Thanks Jerry, It was a guess really, but the redwood has such a beautiful tone that I lucked out.
Did you number the back of the tiles to see how they look back together. And put them in one frame, to see how they look back together? Thanks Jerry
I didn't thin about it..haha. Not a bad idea though.. thanks
thank you for sharing great setup
thank you for sharing great setup
Thanks Cheryl
That truly was an interesting project. I truly enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Tracy, hope it was of some value
Good afternoon! We decided to take care of this sport with children. But to order a club from another country is expensive. We can do it ourselves, but there are no drawings like you. In your video, the blurry drawing is not visible. You can send a clear photo to us at: aweres77@yandex.ru ??? If necessary, we can buy this drawing from you for money. Thank you ......
Hi Maks, You can see best photo here...chestofbooks.com/home-improvement/woodworking/Wood-Turning-Art/Indian-Clubs.html
I love the natural beauty of wood. This technique kind of mixes natural classic beauty with an added abstract design. Really looking forward to trying this out! Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Thank you John
What kind of paint did you use ? a latex / oil ??
Hi Eric, just plain acrylic pain with PVA glue added and a little water to make it flow.
Thanks , very interesting concept , has me thinking
Did you have any problems with the ca sticking to the bushings Thanks Roger
Hi Roger, yes, I do get ca build up. But i just touch my square face carbide tool to them when spinning. I know some use vasoline or similar, but I dont like to risk contamination. Every few months, I will buy a new set of bushes.
Really nice bowl. What type of paint did you use. Were they oil or acrylic paint?
Just realized I brought the same tuners
Very informative. The out come was nice. I will be trying this soon. Thank you for the video. Bob T
Thanks Bob, good luck with your project.
I watched it all great finish bro.. you're real So enjoy utube.. be well.
As a wood turner for 45 yrs years here.. you work is fun and creative.. much thanks
