Rivals For Catan Board Game | Review
Hear our thoughts about the two player card game, Rivals for Catan.
The Rivals for Catan is a reimplementation of Catan Card Game.
The Rivals for Catan was released in German in September of 2010, on the 15th anniversary of the original card game. An English edition was released in the fourth quarter of 2010. The designer of the game, Klaus Teuber, has stated that he completely reworked many of the original card game's mechanics to make it easier for newcomers to play the game.
Each player portrays a prince for Catan, developing their individual provinces and competing to build a more successful province than the other. The basic mode of play is similar to the original Catan Card Game, where players expand their provinces by building settlements connected by roads. Players may also build expansions in their settlements that aid them in various ways, or upgrade their settlements to cities to allow more expansions to be built. They build these additions by using resources that they accumulate each turn, which are determined by the roll of a die. Cards are drawn on each turn to replenish the players' hands. The players may also use action cards that directly affect either their own province or their opponent's province.
The Rivals for Catan features a reduced pool of cards, without the more aggressive style of action cards found in the original Catan Card Game. Therefore, all action cards will be able to be used from the beginning of the game unlike in the original card game.
Ways to Play:
The Introductory Game focuses on the basics of the card game, featuring gameplay that is more appropriate for newcomers. This game is played to 7 victory points and includes 36 Expansion Cards in four stacks. This play style should take beginner players 25 to 30 minutes to play.
Three Theme Games add more rules, expansions, and aggressive cards. These Theme Games may be played individually or combined to play a variant called "The Duel of the Princes." Each Theme Game adds 24 Expansion and Event Cards to the cards from the Introductory Game, which are placed in two stacks separately from the cards from the Introductory Game. When playing a Theme Game, playtime should be around 45 to 60 minutes.
As with the original Catan Card Game, players can also play the Tournament Game, in which each player chooses specific cards to build their deck ahead of time from which they draw from during the game.
Theme:
The theme of The Rivals for Catan is no longer restricted only to the feudal era of the Middle Ages like the original Catan Card Game. The Introductory Game portrays the very early years of the world of Catan, while each Theme Game takes place in progressively later eras. These eras are known as "The Era of Gold," "The Era of Turmoil," and "The Era of Progress."

Does this work with 2? Can get it cheap but not if it doesn’t work for 2.
Yes. All counts are fun. See our review: ua-cam.com/video/eTzTD_EHcsA/v-deo.htmlsi=AWm0Cj-vCX-jVl7m
Can troops be moved around to another adjacent continents once the attack phase is over and before the next player's turn?
No. After a battle ends all troop cards played get discarded.
I don't need a board, one of the great things about this game is the box size. I prefer it to regular Catan, I never really warmed to the trading mechanic (& consequently the table talk related to it) in regular Catan. Now that we are relegated almost exclusively to 2 players in our games, all the more reason to prefer this one. We've had it for several years now & whenever we play we just play the base game. I found our copy in the secondary market for well under $20, another reason to like it:) Maybe we will try the expansions next time we play!
Thanks for the comments. It’s fun with or without a board, for sure.
First, I was wondering if the dials went to 11 just as John said so. Second, you know my music views, so don’t care about the Beatles or the Stones. Third, RIP Dan. Gone too soon.
YOU are the real rockstar, my friend.
"Now he legitimately has a strength advantage." I want those words engraved on my tombstone.
Done!!
I got the reference while eating my pudding.
JB, ftw 🙌
Is there a limit to how many troop cards you can deploy? Can you deploy more than 2 troop cards as a defender?
Question 1) no Question 2) yes
@ Thank you !!!
I know you mentioned it briefly, but do you think the small elements of luck make or break the game? I despise games that pretend to be “euro” or take 1.5 hours of my game evening, only to be decided by dice or cards.
That’s a good question. There is definitely the chance for a particular play through of this to turn on a card you wish you could get, but wasn’t available. However, I think this game builds that into the design and it is not noticeable over several plays to be a damper on your enjoyment. The game really is about maximizing what you have at the time and that unknown/luck element gives it that exploration and piratey feel to it. If I made a top 10 list of games that I played in 2024 this one is probably number one.
@ thanks for the reply! I absolutely love Great Western Trail by this designer, so I think I’ll try this one next.
I hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for tuning in.
When I heard of the concept of this game I thought it was hilarious, it reminds me of apocalyptic comedy movies where everything is chaos and people are freaking out as **** hits the fan. I can't imagine why anyone would get pissed, whine, or be upset because this game is short, inexpensive, and a meme lol, good review
It’s always a blast! Watch our playthrough to see some good natured “whining.” Thanks for the comments.
I believe "whining" is a strong take. Perhaps "calling out the other players for targeting a poor, hapless associate" is more fitting.
@@ZuperJohnviolins…
I believe i spotted a minor rules error. In HUNTING phase 2, all players complete movement, then in phase 3 all players do an action. It probably doesn't matter that much, but a player's movement could be influenced depending on the results of a search by the previous player.
You are correct. I mentioned this goof in the description below the video. Dumb mistake but I agree, it didn’t make much difference in this one.
I realize it's been a while since you've made content for this channel, but can we get another LfWC playthrough? You seem to have one of two LfWC playthrough videos on youtube, and the channel got the rules all sorts of wrong. Let's try to get one where Jack makes it to at least Night 4.
I’ll see what I can do.
Nice video! me and the wife just picked this up.
Thanks! I hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
Your fingers are not muscular 😅 since fingers dont have muscles 😂
Who has two middle fingers and doesn’t appreciate your facts??? (It’s @ZuperJohn) (Also, thanks for watching and commenting and we hope you have a great 2025)
great review! lol
I want to be part of this
To answer your question, I beleve as long as you have the available to spend, you can take whatever action you want, but only once. Leftover points get lost.
I have this game
Finally got a good playthrough of this game explaining the rules as you go! Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful. This and baseball one are quite solid roll and writes.
Finishing the game with less winning points than the opponents makes no sense to me.
It’s a bold strategy!
Oof, tough round for fenirob! You mentioned toward the end of the video that you were still just using 4 dice, and that's been driving me crazy to watch. I think you could have soaked one of the corruption draws by killing off Gandalf, and then you could have brought out Gandalf the White. Aragorn takes a little more effort to get out, but you might have been able to move him down south fairly quickly, especially since Evil Jeff was slow to attack in Gondor. It definitely hurt that you kept getting revealed. Every reveal 'wastes' another character die to hide you again. So when you get revealed more often than the statistical mean, that puts you in a hole - especially with only 4 dice! Also, getting Evil Jeff down to 1 minion left in Dol Goldur, and then he puts two more units back in?? Argh. So frustrating. If you could have grabbed D.G., that might have opened up a path to victory by points. I'll watch video 3 soon to see if the Fellowship can turn the tides!
I love this play-by-play, even though it hurts to relive those moments! I’m glad you’re enjoying it and thanks for interacting with the channel. “Arise, arise, riders of Rohan!”
Never would’ve thought of doing this co-op against AI. Such a great idea.

Haha. You are a masochist! (And also, thanks).
@@fenirob I have a board game day with the guys tomorrow and needed to learn how to play. I I find watching people actually play is so much easier for me to learn than a blathering "how to" guide in most cases :D and now I can explain it to them
Well, I hope you have fun. It’s a great game. #noblathering
At 44:56 When you get a city, aren’t you supposed to add additional regions stacked on top and below city?
From what I can tell building a city only allows you to (in the future) build one additional building two spaces above the city and one additional building two spaces below the city. See page 11. It’s not the same as a settlement, which allows you to add two regions immediately. Am I missing something or misunderstanding your question?
I have the Last Will, always wanted to check out The Prodigals' Club for its additional modules. Aren't these two among the most fun ideas for board games? Will watch your complete playthrough soon.
I agree. They’re possibly the funniest euros out there.
Greetings from Germany. Your video helped me a lot to learn the rules. Great gateway game and immediate hit with my family.
Greetings from across the pond. I’m glad it was helpful and you enjoyed it. Keep the sharks at bay, and here’s to making it safely off the island.🍻
So cool. Wish y'all a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
Thanks! Same to your family. 🍻
I played against the same monsters with 2 players and lost. Terror level was reached. I was able to kill the Yeti and complete the Sphinx's grid, but I was nowhere near fulfilling its defeat condition (step 2). Pretty hard. I'll try with 3 heroes next and see if there's any difference.
Godspeed. The 🌎 is hanging in the balance. 🫡
