I recall listening to Don Friedman back in the early to mid sixties when he was house pianist at the Clifton Taproom in Clifton,New Jersey! Those were great nights. Players like Zoot, Clark Terry, etc would be guests.

Saw Harvie years ago accompanying Sheila Jordan at the Great American Music or Yoshi’s in the SF Bay Srea. Enjoyed the session!

Great solo with a very melodic and thematic ending!

To my ears, there's a kind of cool "rub" or tension between where you feel the beat and where the drummer does, especially in the beginning of this recording...He has a "wide" beat and you play beautifully on the front edge of it and Alan just flows beautifully with it all...Love your solo and the way your bandmates accompany you...High level listening and interaction here; thanks to all of you for your dedication to the art and craft of playing this music🙏🏽

Thank you for posting this. What sn absolute monster player Jeff was! He really validates the bass guitar's place in jazz and bebop. I regret not being able to see him play live.

I had the pleasure of seeing Jim Hall many times and, recording him for two days at the Sweet Basil Club in NYC. He was the consumate, understated with the best sense of humor. Still missed to this day!

I have fond memories of seeing Harvie at the 55 Bar on Christopher St. way back in the day. There are so many great recordings of this song - Bill Evans w/Scott LaFaro & Paul Motion, Hank Jones w/Ron Carter & Tony Williams. But for some reason, this recording has stuck with me like few others over the past 30 years. When anyone mentions Nardis, this has become the version I have in my head! I had been a fan of both Scofield and Stern, but In a Different Light really made me take a deep listen to Harvie and Mick Goodrick. This version of Nardis and a song called Equilibrium with Mick on the album, are among my all time favorites. Thanks for so many great years of excellent music, Harvie!
