Oiling and assembly procedures for an English lever platform escapement.
Unfortunately we've lost footage for part two, so rather than scrap the series, we'll just move on. Part 3 coming soon.

Investigating an English lever platform escapement.

Join me in the disassembly and assessment of this English lever platform escapement. In this real-time point of view footage, I think out loud as I uncover some questionable repair history, and decide the correct next steps to restore this clock.
Microwelding a knife edge

Building up a worn verge knife edge. I make use of the Orion 100c micro-welder to do so.
Repivot a platform escape arbor
Переглядів 58 тис.8 років тому
This is a new technique to me, but so far it's been flawless every time. The carbide drill is 0.2mm, and I choose to file the pivot to size rather than use the lathe. This is just personal preference, it can be done either way.
Repivotting

A quick (and very sped up) video of me repivotting a fusee centre arbor on the 8mm watchmakers lathe, using a few simple tools.
Hi, I am looking for a english rathet tooth lever or detent platform escapement for a fusee carriage clock. Any help on where i can get it? THANKS
What type of steel did you use for the pivot. And where do you buy it? Thank you. Great technique!!
Superb video, thank you. I am a Marine Engineer and horology hobbyist living in Portugal, currently busy with a lovely French-built carriage clock as a wedding present for my eldest son.....I really appreciate the video. Fortunately, the platform escapement I am dealing with is in better nick than the one in this video. Thanks again...
Hi Scott when do you hope to have the full reassembly video uploaded. Thanks for all your hard work in preparing these, they are really useful. Best wishes Ian
Excellent video Scott. Looking forward to seeing the next instalment. Have found your book very helpful.
Awesome, thank you!
Great video, the detail of the examination and your commentary are so informative
Thank you! I find narrating my work actually helps me spot things.
Quite unique video. ¡Gracias por compartir!
Great work and really loved your camera work on this. I made a video on how to use the Jacot tool and all of a sudden the price of them went up. This little device is much better and I have one and use it often.
I’ve seen that tool before and wondered what it was for. Now I know
Bronze from china not gout .dont's uze !
Bu aleti nerede bulabilirim.
Hello Scott Wich files do you use for polishing the pivots I bought a Jacot tool sadly without files :/
Hi. I have a couple of vintage drilling lathes like yours, but i cannot find any drilling bit to fit (shank too big). Can you tell your drilling bits shank size?
Wonderful
I've learned something from you, thank you I'll try it!
Hi I have just purchased a Plutra 10. I notice you use another tailstock modified yo hold the drill guide , would I do the same on the pultra and as it is a D shaped for the bed I am assuming I need the same?
Music would have been nice..lol
could you fix my arbor escapement wheel of my seagull watch.??
Привітання вам,де та як можна придбати таке устаткування,бо я хотів би теж так чинити часові осі
hi, i want to ask you what are the knives with which you cut the steel? from vidia, steel fast?
do you make those drills? they are so fukin small we cant even see it..
Me too
ÓTIMO TRABALHO, BRASIL OK.
Hi. Thanks for your demo. Do you need to heat treat the work to harden it after welding? Thanks Jt.
Excellent video! Where did you find this re-pivot Jacot tool? eBay? Highly instructive video sure helps a lot. Many thanks!
Excellent!
Nice!!
Same routine for a small pivot?
Boa tarde! Eu resido no Brazil,Apucarana , Paraná. Sou relojoeiro e preciso de brocas para repivotar engrenagens e balanços. Por favor você pode me ajudar? aqui não se encontra destas brocas.
compra do estrangeiro, na europa tem disso.
Hello! Great job! What is the name of the first tool? I am not english so I don't know the name. Trying to find it somewhere... Thank you.
+Duo du Rêve hi! Sorry, I don't actually know the name. I know it as a Repivoting tool, and sometimes they show up in ebay under that name. Good luck
Hammering anything held in the headstock is really bad for the bearings.
jim Truesdale it is. Although we're only tapping it in lightly here, if you need to hammer it hard, then it's the wrong size for the hole.
there is no bearings on this sort of lathe.
+wechbros they have what are called taper bearings, but not ball bearings. Taper bearings are actually very good for lathes, they can be adjusted for wear and take longitudinal (hammering) forces better than most ball bearings. As far as I'm aware, anyway.
You'r right, sorry. I learn a new word, "taper bearing" thx :)
You can see the spindle moving sideways when you tap and use your graver - things are not good! At best you can adjust the play in the spindle - worst, the bearings are already shoot!
I just purchased a cowell 90 lathe not the basic one. I want to make a new arbor for the escapement pallet, and pivot it. Would it be best to drill out arbor, and insert pivot wire, or turn the pivots, so it is one piece of metal. will also have to learn how to use the lathe.
+Stephen Baguley you're definitely better off turning a pivot on the arbor. Drilling and repivotting should be considered a last resort repair. Hold the arbor in the lathe chuck as close as possible to where you are turning the pivot or it will try to climb up an over the tool if it is long enough to bend
Drill brand?😊
+hongfa watchmaker I honestly don't know, most of my tools are bought at auction and are unsigned.
Im just looking to purchase a 8mm lathe myself :)
I dont think there is any need to be any more informative, I found it straight to the point and explained it well. Thank you
where do you get the tool to do the drilling in the bottom of the arbor
eBay is my best choice -
Good clear demo of the steps for repivoting. Thanks from theclockworks.biz
I can see there is a lot of end-play in your headstock..
+lawrence fure 5 months later... Yes, you are right. This was just a quick video I made to get some content up ASAP. I will be remaking it soon, and making it much more informative and with the lathe properly adjusted!
lawrence fure from the pivot pounding:)
@@JDRichard I need something like this
