Stylophone CPM DS-2 Drone Synth CV/Gate Test
Переглядів 2,2 тис.14 днів тому
In this video I try my CPM DS-2 drone with CV and Gate from my Arturia Keystep. The TL;DR is CV to pitch works great, the oscillators track well across several octaves. Gate to LFO reset also works if you want to fake an envelope, but is a bit wonky as the first LFO cycle after a reset is strange.

Since my "Falling Star" patch has been such a big hit, as well as the "Bubbles" patch I used in my unboxing video, I made this tutorial showing how to create these sounds on your own CPM DS-2! If you skip ahead in the chapters, you'll need the Falling Star patch set up before moving on to Bubbles. 0:00 Demo 0:57 Falling Star Tutorial 4:15 Change patch to Bubbles
Stylophone CPM DS-2 and Oberheim TEO-5 Drone Synth Jam 1/19/2025

I got the Stylophone CPM DS-2 analog drone synth and the Oberheim TEO-5 polysynth together for a nice relaxing jam. Recorded on a Zoom H6 recorder and Valhalla Vintage Verb and a little limiting and compression added in Ableton. All other effects including delays are from the synths themselves.

Oberheim TEO-5 MIDI Poly Aftertouch Bug
Переглядів 9928 днів тому
I discovered a bug in the Oberheim TEO-5 when using it with an external MIDI controller that sends Poly Aftertouch messages, in my case, a Hydrasynth Deluxe. PAT messages appear to be tracked at each of the 5 voices rather than at the MIDI note number level, so a PAT message for a particular note gets sent to the voice that is playing that note, but only during the Note-On duration. Once a Note...

A little holiday improv jam I did last weekend on the TEO-5, Take 5, Hydrasynth and Sirin. I included a few pictures of Bella too so you're not watching me twiddle knobs for 6 minutes straight. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all, peace and joy for 2025! And lots of treats and toys and love for our wonderful pets too!

Thanks to @MariaCalfaDePaul for allowing me to create this using your beautiful Rav Tongue music. When I saw the original video I thought some Oberheim TEO-5 would be the perfect icing on the Rav Tongue cake. I added 3 TEO-5 tracks - bass, a pad, and a lead. There are some clips of Bella while she ruined a take. LOL. She's so cute though, I don't mind. Gracie and Bella get to be in one video no...
Bella's first jam on the new TEO-5! 😂❤️

Bella decides to walk across my new TEO-5 synth, triggering the sequencer. I had a weird patch for comparing envelope curves up on it at the time so that's why the pitch is bendy. 😂

Nice stuff! I reverse engineered for the Multipoly
The Multipoly has some great filter models. No doubt it can do that sound. 😄

Nice one, a very cool experiment! Just ordered one myself, looking forward to it! 😺🐀
I have a MF and I was wondering if I should get the CP2 since I play a lot of ambient. Did you try to control the pitch of the DS-2 through the CV of the Microfreak ?
cool sound!
Wow!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
This meow inspired drone is cat approved. 😻
Metroid-ish
Good combination of synths. Will try that myself. You got really nice sounds out of them. 👍
Effects certainly help. :)
@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 Sure, especially for the MicroFreak. But my impression is that additional effects for the CPM are really a good thing although it has internal effects.
@ True. The CPM’s effects are pretty limited and lo-fi sounding. External effects take it to the next level.
@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 So i will test it with my Eventide Blackhole. Everything sounds huge then 😂
Great sounding patches and great tutorial! Since I got the DS2 I have been somewhat struggling to not get the same sounds.
What happens when you patch the LFO cable to DRONE 1?
I had it patched to the PWM in.
@ Pulse Width Modulation, gotcha 😆.
Excellent demo, thanks
I like these kinds of step by step tutorials. If i ever get one i will have yo rewatch!! Nice job. Love seeing Bella😊
You can do a lot of the same things on other synths. Try on your Grandmother for example, or another analog synth with a self oscillating filter. And I love seeing Gracie too. 😍
Mine finally arrives next week. Going to try exactly what you showed me. Hi Bella!😊
Mike just came yesterday, and this is exactly what I got it for. Thank you for sharing!
Bella approved.
Can you run the stylophone with batteries?
Yes, 6 “AA” cells.
My cat is looking at me strangely 😮
I'm glad I can entertain people's cats over the internet. 😻
Wow this is awesome!😮 Can't wait to have one too..! Subscribed for more! 👍👍👍
Thanks. 😁 I’m a corporate drone during the week so my next vid might not be until the weekend, but my next one I think will be DS-2 w/Korg SQ-1 and external effects.
@ilovecatsandsynths9702 Oh yes please! Korg SQ-1 is one of my favourite pieces of gear ever! I've just got a second one eheh! Thanks a lot buddy 👍
Amazing, a great sound result!
So... no it can't but it can sound like a clanger... or a cat with an impediment having had too much cat nip!
love this

Resistance is futile. You will be asynthalated!
I’ve already changed all the knobs on mine (tip: small Erica Synths knobs are ideal for the three oscs)- and I’ve taken note of the SQ-1 idea…
my cat thinks it can😂
I’m glad I can entertain people’s cats with my creations. 😂
@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 haha thats what synths are for sometimes. Awesome videos!
A seemingly powerful drone synth with lots of cool features. I am just wondering if could use this as a single unit only, to actually operate individually, without connections, just simply turn it on and drone away on a field, park, into the woods, that would be awesome and also using a proper sound recorder. They say it is a portable synth so ideally it should work like that also as it has a built in speaker, Any ideas ??? Thank you
Yes you can. It has a speaker and can drone on batteries, and doesn’t require any patching. Of course, if you pack some cables you can do even more, and plug it into your recorder.
@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 i have received my DS-2 yesterday actually, and currently going through the setup and everything related. It seems there is no sound coming through the built in speaker 🔊 when switching the synth on, hence the previous question. It is running on batteries at the momebt as i am waiting for a 12 V DC adaptor to arrive. Not really sure what it could possibly be. My volume knob, the main one is all the way up but can barely hear anything, other then a low hissing sound. Thinking if this could be a firmware issue or something else, i have sent an email to Stylophone and still waiting for a reply, hopefully they can come up with a plausible solution.
@ilovecatsandsynths9702 Thanks for the prompt response. I actually received my DS-2 yesterday and currently going through the setup and everything, etc.. Unfortunately I ran into some issues here, hopefully these can be rectified accordingly, hence the my previous question to your video. When I switch the drone synth one ( it is powered by batteries at the moment, but waiting for a standard 12 V DC adaptor to arrive shortly ) it doesn't produce any sound at all, I mean I can clearly see the red lights are on, on the LDO side but nothing coming out through the mini built in speaker. I turned the volume know, the main one all the way up, also the one adjacent to the phones port, still no results, only a vague, dimmed hissing sound. Starting to think if I am doing something wrong, or it is literally a firmware fault/issue, I haven't done/ tampered with anything, just simply removed it from the box it came through. I have reached out to Stylophone by email but nothing yet, so hopefully they will come up with a plausible solution to this. It is a bit frustrating especially after being on the waiting list for an year lol 🙃
Just to take into consideration, some minor grammar errors in my previous message because I was typing fast in my phone, but the whole picture should be understandable.
@ I’d start by centering all the knobs, instead of having them all fully counterclockwise as it comes out of the box. Make sure the filter is on LP, turn cutoff up, turn resonance down, and turn up the individual drone volume at the bottom right in the filter section. Start with the LFO waveforms turned off just to eliminate that variable from the equation, and concentrating on getting a sound out of one drone generator first. The phones volume also controls the speaker volume if phones aren’t plugged in. The main out volume controls the main output level.
Great more please. As soon as I can bring myself to change the patch that Ive been playing with for the last two days these will help me to understand the synth quicker. This synth is addictive
I watched the video and decided to make a purchase! It will arrive the day after tomorrow. Is the power supply not included? In the video, are you connecting a 12V Eurorack power unit? If I use six AA batteries, would 9V still work? I couldn’t find an official power supply even after searching. If you know of an affordable power supply you would recommend, please let me know. Sorry for asking so many questions!
A power supply is not included, but 6 "AA" batteries are. It needs a 12V w/minimum of 200mA center-positive barrel connector power supply, like the ones many synths use. I used one that came with my Moog Werkstatt-01 and it worked fine. You can find PSUs on Amazon that are compatible. The instructions say it will shut down below 5.5V or so, but that's when using the 6 AA batteries. I don't know if a 9V supply would work or if it has to be 12V. Don't use a pedal power supply as those are usually center negative! You can also remove it from the case and mount it into a Eurorack enclosure and use the standard Eurorack power connector.
@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 Thank you so much for your advice. I will try it.😀
@@ilovecatsandsynths9702 The power supply I bought on eBay worked perfectly. Thank you very much!🤩 12V 1A 1000MA POWER SUPPLY 2 METER CABLE CENTRE POSITIVE POLARITY 2.5 MM X 5.5MM
It sounds more like a whale's song than a meow
Catfish? 🤣 My Take 5 does a better meow. 24db filters and narrow pulse wave for best results.
Cheers for this. It’s still not quite what I had in the first few minutes of messing around, which was a much slower falling ping that was just gorgeous, but it’s still a lovely noise!
Guess you just have to keep experimenting. The rate of the fall is the LFO rate so that’s easy to lower. If you want the pinging speed to be lower, I found that if you pitch link both drones, turn drone 1’s pitch down, you can get drone 2’s pitch even lower, so try that for slower pinging.
Great tutorial. I’d done my bubbles simply by ear and experimentation. I think I’d done basically the same. It sounds lovely.
@ I just watched your demo. Lovely stuff. This is definitely a happy accident machine. Experiment and you’re sure to come across something amazing.
Interesting, thanks for sharing
Now control the pitch meow by a sequencer😂
Hook my Keystep up and have my cat control it 😁
Good stuff!
Looks like it's asking to be paired with Korg SQ-1 :)
In a future video. :)
I hope to try it soon, I expect my DS-2 to be delivered tomorrow. Meanwhile I watched your videos - well done and thank you for the ideas!
Good job. I’m trying to sync the LFO’s to external clock. Quite impossibile. The only option is patching a clock signal to LFO rate. It creates a sort of sync. Any other ideas?
@ do you mean patching clock to LFO reset? That’s the closest thing you’ll get to clock sync with an analog LFO. Patching a clock to LFO rate will just make the rate change in time with the clock signals, like when I accidentally patched my Keystep gate to the LFO rate and it sped up when I played a note, 😆
Weirdly patching a clock to rate gives more interesting results than to reset. Thanks
Nice work....
Perfect tracking..if only the Lyra 8 did this
illegal !!! no cv and gate for drones !
Wow that was a long wait. I was told to till wait till today,January 20th, when the next batched is to be shipped out. Looks Bella approved. Thanks, and that Pink Floyd thing was cool.🤘🤘🤘
I'd love to use this when I'm flying in an aeroplane however might get strange looks by passengers 😅
It a Clangers sex party.
I love the way cats have to supervise everything we do. My cpm arrived today, I'm excited to see what I can do with it
I made that falling star this morning and then lost it and can’t get it back. Filter closed, high resonance, LFO on a sawtooth?
@@danpreston564 Use LFO sawtooth to filter for the "falling" part, turn up resonace to get the dropping tone, and set the oscillator to a square and turn the frequency down to get the modulation. Tweak resonance to get the filter to respond to the osc "pings" the way you want. Add delay and reverb, done.
I’m just not getting it! Your LFO is really slow but is pinging really fast! 33 years with synths and my brain has finally turned to mush.
Is it the modulation on the delay that’s making the fall?
@@danpreston564LFO is only making the pitch go down by modulating filter cutoff (Each LFO cycle is another "falling star".) The pinging is from the VCO on square turned almost all the way down on the pitch knob. The patch is sort of the opposite of what you might expect...the VCO is acting as an LFO, the filter is the oscillator and the LFO is a pitch envelope. 😂
@ blimey, the sweet spot on the resonance and pitch to get it sounding right is very small! Thanks for your time, man.
Awesome work with this great piece of gear. My cat seems to be mesmerized by it....check the short I just put out. He just made me subscribe to your channel
@@enochroot9438 haha, just watched it!
Got one on the way then they release the damn filter one too STYLOPHONE CPM DF-8 and I’m like dam-it now I need that one too lol

I didn’t mention in the video that in addition to Eurorack style patch cables, they included a 3.5mm TRS-to-TRS audio cable, an inline attenuator and a splitter cable.
