A train engineer's old home movie of watching rail yard operations

Old home movie footage of watching yard operations while living in a car in a rail yard due to being forced from home due to job cuts. Nothing else better to do but pull out an old video camera and record what was going on around me to help fight boredom until called for work.
Memories of Conn barracks Schweinfurt, Germany June 1997

Some video footage mixed with some narraration about Conn Barracks from June 1997. Showing what a bit of soldier life was like during that time period. Most footage was edited out due to filming people at parties. I took more photos in those days and did not film as much as I should have. 26 years has passed since the filming of this video which still seems like yesterday. To me, they were the ...

CSX locomotive Ride Through The CSX Hagan Switchback Tunnel 2008

Old film footage that I thought I had lost over the years. I no longer work this line of road and this footage might be interesting to those that search for the Hagan tunnel. Footage is shot from a cab of a locomotive entering the Smith Kentucky side of the tunnel and exiting out of the Hagan Virginia side. The tunnel is around 6400 feet in length.

Great memories! I was there HHT 3/4 Cav... later reflagged 1/4 Cav. Dec 91 to Jun 97.
I got there in February of 97, not long before you left.
I was stationed at the Airfield on Conn from 1976-1979
Was there from 1997-2000 1/77 armor
Thanks for your UA-cam post of my clubs Richmond, KY, hamfest for this year, 2024. It will help our future events. We had over 235 paid attendees this year, and thanks to all for coming out. Central Kentucky Amateur Radio Society (CKARS) sponsored. KJ4BAD
@@williambingham2459 I should have filmed more but was too busy buying and browsing. Hopefully it will spur more interest for next years fest!
This is wicked cool! Also I was the 600th 👍🏻
Thank you!
I had got out before the Bosnia tour, but we were training for it when I did get out. 98 Fox trp
@@rogerholloway9493 you missed out on all the fun!
My dad was in iraq in 2003. 3rd ACR, HowBatt, 2nd squadron
I left the 3rd ACR about a few weeks before they were stop lossed to go to Iraq.
This brought back a ton of memories going to this exact fest many years. I grew up there from 91-99.
@@Supermansdad glad it helped!
I am assuming you partied at the Rock Fabric (spelling?)? I had so much fun in Schweinfurt.
@@mattd8670 Oh yeah!! You can’t be at Schweinfurt with going to the Fabrik!
@@wanderingrailroader4345, I had so much fun at that bar! There was that and “The Rock,” a smaller bar in town. I had my own cab driver, he went by “Speedy.” I used to call and request him and he fucking got there in a pinch. Make my usual drunken stop at McDonald’s, pick up some McRibs on my way back.
@mattd8670 I’ve got speedy on another video. He was usually sitting outside the gate many times. I partied many times at the fabrik. Some of the local chicks I met took me and some buddies to other clubs in other towns where they didn’t allow Americans in and pretended that we were Germans too. Sometimes the parties got a little too much when I woke up under some bushes in an area I had to clue where I was. Those were the days!
I was living on Conn Barracks from October 1996 until June 1999. I was a part of Bco 1/18 Infantry.
Was that Speedy, the cab driver?!!!!
I had forgot that about that name but it probably was!
Steam engines are my favorite era of railroading.
😎 🆒️
Loved watching this. I was there from 94 to 96. At change of command from 3rd to 1st ID.
I was in B co. 3rd Forward Support as A Tow Weapons Mechanic, and SD as a Chaplain's Assistant from 1987 to 1991 I lived on the 2nd floor in Building 31, the Female barracks were in the first area of the floor, and my room was just past the secondary hall doors. I refereed a lot of Softball, Flag Football, Basketball, and a couple German/American Tacke games.
I was there JAN '95 - DEC '97. Deputy Community Chaplain.
I was down the street at 1-18 INF from 2000 - 2003. Thanks for sharing, good to see the old stomping grounds.
I was Bco 1/18 Infantry from October 1996 to June 1999.
I remember the old boobytrapped underground tunnel and plane legend.
I always wondered how much of that was true. I did see some old sealed off entrances in some places. Flooded probably but highly doubtful it was booby trapped.
The only two entrances I remember, there was one over by the quartermaster building/railhead dock, and one over by the range next to the airfield. There was some sort of updated ramp that lead down into something by the flagpole area near the gate but it had doors that were always locked. I also heard another rumor the plane was under the gym/shopette but, I can't confirm.@@wanderingrailroader4345
UA-cam deleted my first response to your reply so I will try again. The two portals I knew of were one by the railhead site and old quartermaster bldg and the other was on the small arms range over by the airfield. There was a ramp that led down to some sort of equipment with modern locked doors over by the front gate flag pole but i'm not sure what that was. I'd heard another rumor the plane was buried under the gym/shopette.@@wanderingrailroader4345
I was stationed 3/52 ada 86-87 I think right there by where the Gazebo was in the old German barracks across from the NCO club.
I lived in that building 2000-2002! Same floor, same hallway. Also was in C troop. They moved us out of that building into those nco barracks soon after I got there. Best 2 yrs ever!
I spent about 6 months there, then force moved to e-4 and below barracks, then another 6 months had to move again from HHT to C troop. Then had to move again to the states, only to get deployed overseas after 6 months there. Needless to say I got tired of moving
The guy is playing dune on the console
I was in A Troop 3/4 Cav from 90-93, loved my barracks back then. We were in the first building on the left when you came thru the gate across from the old mailroom and the DFAC.
I was stationed at Conn barracks from 81-83 with Hq 3-64 Armor! Best tour ever
The 666 swinging bridge. Been there many times.

@BakerBaker1-9 it’s bridge close to the Tennessee line
I was stationed at Conn barracks from 2002-2005. 1/4 Cav. I was also C Troop and lived in the same building as you
97-99 was when I was there. Probably hadn’t changed much since u got there.
Lived right across from you Bravo Company 3rd support , was there from 1989 to 1993 was attached to 3/64 armor ( 45 kilo turret mechanic) trip down memory lane , use to hang out at the lower cavern club
Female section? Bldg 31 was for 3rdFsb and 299Fsb and some MP company. Yes there were female soldiers but more important was "Team Cav" the direct support for 3/4 and later 1/4 CAV. WE BUST NUTS 🤪
I never knew anything about that building other than being told females were housed there. I can’t remember seeing females in cav units so I only knew it as female barracks. No idea what unit stayed there. This video was made around the time I had only been in Germany about 4 months.
@@wanderingrailroader4345 the females were at Fort hood Texas with the OH51 helicopters, they came back right before we deployed to Bosnia in 1996. Miserable bunch of hags and nags.
@@wanderingrailroader4345, I know there were female medics when we I was there. They were toward the front, far from us grunts. 😂. They hung out with us, gave us IV’s when we would drink too much. Remember all the gate guards after the embassy bombings? That sucked! Spent one of my birthday’s guarding the entrance to Conn. deployed to Bosnia in 1997.
@@mattd8670 I had to guard the married soldiers housing.. Askren manor or something like that, can't remember right off hand, to many years ago. a buddy of mine dated a medic chick.. She decided she was gay and dumped him and got kicked out of the army. She was so hot too..
I was on Conn from 1995-1996. I was attached to Bco 3rd FSB from Eco 703rd out of Kitzingen to support 3/4 Cav on the "Team Cav" MST. I was a TOW Missile Tech. You probably saw my initials on some verification stickers on your ISU. I deployed to Bosnia with them too. We were reflagged to 1st ID while downrange in 1996. I remember your roommate being captured in 1999. I was stationed in Hanau at the time. Shortly after they got released I had to go down to Macedonia for a deployment just before I ETS'd. One of the other guys that was captured grew up in a town not too far from where I grew up in Michigan. Did you ever hear about specialist Michael New when you were there? He made the news as well. He didn't want to wear the UN blue beret. It was a big deal when I was there.
I don’t remember hearing about Michael New. I also didn’t have any tv or internet at the time. I was pretty much clueless to world events until it came down to the brass telling us we were going somewhere. Got most of my info from the Stars and Stripes and even then I didn’t keep up with that. I remember a big deal about someone’s gun went off and killed some kid in Macedonia and a huge stink was raised about that. I’ll have to look up on the Michael new story.
I was 1-1 Cav Budingen 2 years before you filmed this. Great video and awesome memories.
Time gets away so fast and still seems like yesterday!
We used to go to the Lorbass in Budigan all the time when I was stationed in Hanau 1997-2000.
about 10:00 minute mark looks like the quad and gazebo area outside building 19A where I stayed. Nice to see nothing really changed from 1997 to 2011 when I was there.
My son was born in Wurzburg. Husband was stationed in Scwheinfurt
Brings back memories. 1983- 84. My son was born here.
Since it sounds like you are working pusher on Hazel Patch hill (around MP KC149?) and that old tunnel numbered "17" I would believe that was part of the main originally that was bypassed by a later line revision. The only branches in this area were the old Rockcastle River RR abandoned in the 1930s, it branched off to the east at East Bernstadt for 16 miles to Bond but had no tunnel near the junction, and an L&N branch to Johnetta that cut off to east from Brush Creek near MP KC142. Once again since tunnel numbered 17 I'd say ex main. Check out section just north of Sinks/Mullins (Orlando) where there are several bridges and tunnels (numbered in the low teens I believe) in a 1 mile stretch with main line tunnels, as well as mileposts, here numbered starting from Covington and the mileposts KC from the original Kentucky Central Railroad.

I think I found your location on Google maps. I think this tunnel was part of an older alignment of the branch line that goes to Mt. Vernon.
That tunnel looks smaller than your modern engine. Could it be a tunnel for mining?
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
Abandoned Railroad Tunnel Tunnel #17 which sits abandoned outside of Cairo West Virginia. The old tunnel was part of a 72 mile track built by the B&O Railroad in the 1850s. Now part of the North Bend Rail Trail, this and two other abandoned tunnels, along with 10 other accessable tunnels, make up a magnificent trail from Parkersburg to Clarksburg that has no more than a 3% grade.
Was from a Google Search for abandoned tunnel 17
This tunnel is in rockcastle county, Kentucky. Not sure if it was a tunnel you know that you were talking about or this one.
@@wanderingrailroader4345 wasn't sure of the location. So i just did a google search for abandoned tunnel 17 and it came up with the Cairo one. Assume the CSX line is former L&N ?
@@wills-e7314 yes it’s former L&N. When I get a chance, I hope to check out a few more abandoned tunnels in this area just to see what one might find.
There’s an old stone railroad foundation next to a bridge that crosses the river at Fort Meade in Maryland. Always wondered about it.
You made a great find, amazing what can be found when the trees are in hibernation, I live outside of the borough of Susquehanna Pennsylvania, the Erie railroad built through the area back in the late 1840's, the railroad built a round house and repair shops and had a good size rail yard for cars and engines, it is the "jump off point" between the Susquehanna river crossing over Gulf Summitt to the Delaware river at Deposit New York, the Erie railroad became the Erie Lackawanna railroad then became part of Conrail back in the 1970's before becoming almost abandoned when the New York Susquehanna and Western bought the rail line, this stretch of railroad runs from Jersey City New Jersey and Binghamton New York with points further on both ends, I don't know of any tunnels that may exist but it's a possibility further past the Delaware's river, the main highlight of my area is the Starrucca viaduct, built by the Erie railroad to cross the Starrucca creek, it is over 110 feet high originally built for two sets of rails and over 1,000 feet long with a grade leading up to Cascade valley and Gulf summit, the Starrucca viaduct is the oldest railroad bridge still in use today and was built in 1847&1848 , the Erie railroad also had a rail line that ran from Carbondale Pennsylvania up into New York State crossing under the Starrucca viaduct, it was sold to the Delaware and Hudson railroad before being acquired by Conrail and completely abandoned by 1989 with the tracks being removed and the railbed turned into a rail trail, the D&H was recently paved over the past few years by the rail trail commission with some bridges being concreted or the rail trail moved to bypass a old bridge
By the size of the oak tree in the path of the tunnel... must be close to 150 years
Echo echo echo
Judging on where the train tunnel is at and the way you came out of the woods, most likely you would come off the main line to a switch by the way it looks to me.
I swear I hear a steam engine idling
