It's time to review Slam Dunk Ernest. Ernest plays basketball seems like a straight forward plot, right? Not when you include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as an Angel, magic shoes, and a convoluted plot around the shoes that seems to include a demonic shoe salesman. It's sure to be... interesting.

Join Loren as we encounter random cowboys, ill defined characters who might be our best friends, and homicidal bullies. The "Your World As I See It" video is a collection of short segments where his Astor Clement character introduces a topic before cutting to what look like excerpts from the Ernest commercials and possibly the "Hey Vern" show (the baby character is used), then it cuts back to Astor to make a snide comment and say "this has been your world as I see it." They seem like they were made to be short commercial bumpers for something like Comedy Central, which they used to have back in the day. They were clearly not meant to be seen as one 30 minute video since they are so short and Astor's intros and outros are repetitive.

my cabbages moment: Katara's moment with Aang at the end Mako Award: Aang, we see him go to a dark place Avatar State meter: 4 Going to ignore the rhino in the room, haha. Enjoy finally seeing a dark side of Aang born out of grief and a pay off for all the Pie-Cho games Iroh plays.

"my cabbages" moment - When Toph "sees" the library Mako Award - Hector Elizondo as the Spirit, of course Avatar State meter - 4, in hindsight, should have done 1/2 measures, too many great episodes this book. The appearance of Commander Zhao is a nice call back, Toph gets honorable mention for Mako Award because of that heart-wrenching scene with Appa.

"my cabbages" moment - love me some dramatic moments, it's that last scene with Zuko and the lightening storm. Mako Award - gonna go with Toph (she wasn't looking to be a teacher, but doing best she can and does change her tone by the end little bit) Avatar State meter: 4 Sokka may not have had a significant length of the episode, but what we got was excellent. I don't think we ever see Zuko drink the tea. Possible he just gave it to Uncle Iroh. The ending scene was so powerful for Zuko. The cuts seemed very choppy between the different parts, but good parallels between Zuko and Aang being trained by their opposites.

"my cabbages" moment - Second time the gang tries to sleep Mako award - Appa Avatar State rating - 3 Solid chase episode that forces conflict and incorporates all our main characters. For a kids show it's fine, but seems convenient that Zuko happened to be tracking Azula with no lead up to how.

"my cabbages" moment - flashback to last time Zuko talks to his mom Marko Award - Ursa Avatar State rating - 5 One of my favorites because of all the back story for Zuko and the tragic story involving the entire family. While on additional viewing the instant turn of the kid seems odd, though he is bit of jerk throughout. Love that we still don't see the Fire Lord's face yet. Walker Edmiston is a favorite from my childhood with AIO too.

"my cabbages" moment: Agreed, the sonar effects was great and creative representation of what Toff can do. Mako award: Mick Foley as the Boulder, just cause, and Toff has so much more to come Avatar state rating: 4 Agreed, have been waiting for this great setup to an awesome character. Apparently the creator were big wrestling fans themselves. Appreciate the heavy wrestling influences. The awkward dinner scene with Toph's family was a great play on a classic superhero shtick.

"my cabbages" moment: "This is by far the worst town we have ever been to" - Sokka (my sentiments too, haha) Mako award: James Hong as the Mayor Avatar State rating: 3 Enjoyed the detective scenes with Sokka. The theme for these first 5 episodes seems to be a slapstick Aang and gang story with the more grounded Zuko and Iroh subplot. Nothing special, but still fun moments.

"my cabbages moment" - Momo blowing the flying bison whistle and Appa whacking him Mako Award - Sokka, for all the reason you all said Avatar State meter - 3 Again, the intrigue of Iroh and Zuko storyline brings balance to a weird episode that normally would not be that enjoyable for me. Though the new waterbenders were mostly fun and is good setup for things to come.

"my cabbages" moment: "I seem to manage" - Sokka during the fight scene Mako Award: Bumi Avatar State rating: 4 Great introductions to Azula's Accomplishes who also seem formidable and intriguing. And does Penta-Pox sound just legitimate enough that everyone thinks they have heard of it? Poor Momo becomes accessory to a baby-knapping.

"my cabbages" moment: Zuko and Songs conversation on the porch Mako Award: Bradley Dee Baker as Chong (achievement award) Avatar State rating: 3 It's a fun episode that would be too ridiculous if I was directly comparing it to other episodes, but it has it's own merits for being a different style. The Zuko and Iroh scenes were good balance to the entire thing. Think that the lack of reaction from Katara after the lights go out adds evidence that they didn't kiss, besides what you already said. The telling of the Oma and Shu's story felt like animated version of oriental paper puppet shows which was very nice and clever way to present it.

"my cabbages" moment: Azula's conversation with the captain during her introduction Mako Award: Azula, set her up nicely for what she will be capable of moving forward Avatar State rating: 3 A solid jumping off point for the series. We see Azula's threat to Team Avatar and Zuko. General Fong, a stereotypical military leader who only sees results with no concept of the consequences or implications. Understandable to want the war over quickly, but the general clearly has no understanding of what the Avatar truly is and only sees a weapon. He falls flat at the end as a bit idiotic vs being devious which is what Azula shows. The lighting directing by Iroh wasn't significant for me at first watch.

"my cabbages" moment: When Zhao strikes the water spirit and everything goes grey and see the consequences of the moon spirit dying Mako award: Sokka, but honorable mention for Yue and Zuko Avatar State rating: 4 First half is a marked improvement from the last in how the watertribe is portrayed and the stakes involved that leaves a solid cliff hanger. Really cool line from Zuko when the sun comes up, "You rise with the moon, but I rise with the sun". This rewatch I caught that Yue's eye color stays blue after the moon spirit is killed. An honorable mention for "my cabbages moment was when Hahn rushes Zhao and immediately is just thrown overboard. Satisfying conclusion for the season/book.

"my cabbages" moment: Zhao confronting Iroh and Zuko about the broad swords Mako award: Katara Avatar State review: 2 Favorite part was the Zuko/Zhao storyline. It's fine as a bridge but obviously just sets up what's coming. With the master not training because Katara was a girl and then having him be the one who made the necklace felt like two things forced together to make a gender point we already addressed with Sokka.

"my cabbages" moment: Katara swallowing the bug Mako award: The Mechanist, for the performance Avatar State rating: 2 Felt like something just fell flat for me in this episode. It does setup the war balloon being important later on but most of the new characters didn't entertain or intrigue me at all.

"my cabbages" moment: Heart broke when Katara gets hurt and Sokka goes off on Aang, everyone has such raw emotions. Mako Award: Master Jeong Jeong, conflicted but so strong by taking on the mantle of protector Avatar State rating: 3 Aang goes through lot of dynamics here which made things interesting. Got kick out of the digs at Zhao, "they'll make anyone an admiral", "I thought you'd be better than Zuko". Katara learning she can heal was really cool. Though when Sokka asked when she learned and she replied "I guess I always knew" and that didn't make sense for me. "I didn't, I just could", would make more sense.

"my cabbages" moment: The ice dodging sequence, Sokka recognizes Katara and Aang's abilities can help and calls upon them Mako award: Sokka, lot of maturity Avatar State rating: 3 Enjoyed the showcasing of Sokka's maturity in remembering what his dad told him about being where he was needed most and decides to go with Aang in spite of Aang acting like a jerk keeping information from them. Enjoyed use of the colors to explain how the shirshu uses scents was clever and introducing June is good edition. Appa showing off the protective nature hits me different knowing where things go.

"my cabbages" moment: When the man, attacked by the platypus bear, says that Aunt Wu "was right after all" in saying the village wouldn't be destroyed. And then Sokka's agitated "I hate you" Mako award: Aunt Wu, sweet lady who we don't totally figure out, but her heart means well Avatar State rating: 3, didn't speak as deeply for me as Loren it would seem but see how he liked it Got definite Saturday cartoon vibes but interesting elements that foreshadow later developments. The science and reason vs supernatural is a fun element as the backdrop.

"my cabbages" moment: the moment Aang realizes it's Zuko in the mask and the moment of decision of to take him or escape Mako award: as much I agree with you all, I'm gonna go wacky and pick the random secretary who follows Zhao around and then just asks "should I hold off sending that speech to the Fire Lord?" Avatar State rating: 4, the hook is awesome with enough other fun and intensity to round out the experience I didn't think the Blue Spirit was Zuko until the reveal, thought he was someone who had it in for the fire nation from the area. Enjoyed seeing Admiral Zhao fall into the main villain troupe, getting too cocky and ultimately looking like a fool.

Interesting theory of the Avatar State. "my cabbages" moment: The moment during Zuko's flashback when he is facing his father. But yes, that moment in the eye of the storm with Zuko and Aang is very potent. Mako award: Thought about Zuko as well, but gonna zag little bit and go with Lieutenant Jee, he justifiably is upset with Zuko but shows how we the audience are supposed to view Zuko after hearing more of his backstory Avatar State rating: 5, another episode that made me continue to fall in love with this series This is a return to form with the kind of story telling I fell in love with when first watching the series. Zuko's tragic backstory with Aang's own complicated feelings toward his destiny are great insights into what is driving each character. James Hong was one of the monks was a plesant surprise along with first time really hearing Mark Hamil being the Fire Lord.

Cautiously optimistic about this Netflix series. Been burned by adaptations enough recently that I'm not getting too high of hopes up. "my cabbages" moment: Realizing Aang lied, had to laugh at something in this episode Mako award: That poor earthbending guide, just went on one trip too many Avatar State rating: 1, least favorite so far Does have a good lesson about feuds but does very little to drive the plot along. In context what what this show can be it's very forgettable and would easily have skipped it and not missed anything.

"my cabbages" moment: The moment Katara and Aang realize Jet's plan for the dam. Can feel the gut punch to Katara and also up to the moment Sokka reveals what he was up to. Mako award: Sokka, who isn't always right but stepped up when it was needed while still being himself Avatar state rating: 4, thought it was silly but got intense pretty quick Instantly got Robin Hood vibes from Jet and his crew. Thought maybe it would have silly teen soap opera tropes, but it turned intense in a hurry.

"my cabbages" moment: The whole pirate/Aang and gang/Zuko fight sequence. Tempted to give to the "my cabbages" for sake of it's the official confirmation this is a series shtick. Mako award: Torn between Sokka being well rounded or Uncle Iroh for the comic relief. Avatar State rating: 3; has good and fun moments for sure, but can't justify a 4 Enjoyed the fun moments and character exploration with Katara and Aang's relationship. Overall felt this to be a fun and light-hearted episode that still acknowledges the urgency but takes a breathe.

"my cabbages" moment: "Did the definition of genius change in the last 100 years?" Mako award: Appa, he makes sure Aang doesn't go alone, the blockade run and saving Sokka. Fire sage Caillou is very close second and honorable mention. Avatar State rating: 4, solid episode These last two felt like mid season finales to setup the deeper depth of The Avatar's power and what Aang ultimately will have to deal with. With Ruko cleaning his house, complete clean out at that. It does a good job being a stepping stone to the bigger plot along with introducing interesting new characters with the fire sages and good use of Commander Zhao.

"my cabbages" moment: When we realize Zuko has come to rescue his uncle. Also, when Uncle Iroh stands up and Zuko can't look at him. Struck me as funny! Mako award: Agree that Iroh being a badass is awesome, but I'll give some love to Aang, we learn a lot about how he feels guilty about not feeling able to help without his teacher Avatar state rating: 4, solid episode. This episode has lot of world building to setup the "spirit world" that still moves narrative forward but lot of exposition and feels the two storylines were jarring to go between but both were cool. As this is a part 1, we have to wait for pay off but yes, this feels like a complete story. Love that we get a redeeming moment for Zuko when he leaves off chasing the Avatar to help his uncle.

"my cabbages" moment: The lead up to the prisoners taking action against the Warden. The first speech is good, but you get more of the impact when the Warden confronts everyone thinking he is totally in control. Mako award: Katara, though she is the cause for the trouble, she rises to the occasion and inspires the earthbenders to free themselves Avatar state rating: 5, favorite so far Overall this is a beautiful episode with the village and surrounding land contrasted against the ship. The end with Zuko finding the necklace is a great way to keep reminding the audience that he is out there as the main threat without overly using him with the Warden stepping in as the antagonist for this episode.

"my cabbages" Tough to not pick the name sake of this category, but you don't realize the significance until later. The feast is what I'll go with for the oddball nature that sets up the hi-jinks to come. This made me wonder if he had gone bad since Aang knew him and was setting up a betrayal. I wasn't a fan of how long the mail chute scene was. Mako award: Bumi, while I guessed he was likely Aang's friend, he was menacing enough in his demeanor to make me wonder his motivations in the moment. Avatar rating: back up to a 3, intro too long, but picked up right after

"my cabbages" moment - Sokka's appology and training with Suki. Knowing where this goes in the future. It's very sweet. Mako award - Sokka for the depth of his character arc and he gets the kiss, haha Avatar State ranking - this does dip to a 2, while I liked the Kyoshi warrior and Sokka thread, everything else felt very obviously the formulaic cat and mouse chase format with Aang, the gang and Zuko.

"My cabbages" moment - Katara's speech to calm Aang down or the end of the Agni Kai with Uncle Iroh Mako award - Monk Gyatso, he is clearly the strong influence on Aang and the catalyst for the Avatar state, plus seeing him surrounded by all those soldiers and being last man standing is awesome! Avatar State ranking - ticks up to a 4 for the emotional intensity

These first two episodes set the tone of how this series can be simultaneously silly and serious within scenes and episodes. "My cabbages" moment was the village fight scene sequence overall, the Zuko training scene and the ship escape scenes are favorites within each episode. "Mako award" will go to Katara for overall consistency of likability throughout. Aang and Sokka both have jarring moments where on first viewing were not likable or found annoying. "Avatar rating" if you averaging both together this is a 3. There are several I like more or less, but a solid start that establishes the world while giving glimpses of depth of story that is to come.
