How to get a Wonderfold Wagon with insurance for your autistic child
I went for the raffle for my son 👶🏽
Hello
I am a 55-year-old autistic person. I work in the school board in Canada for 32 years now I work with Autistic children, i’d like to say I don’t look at autism as a disability if you’re measuring between neurological and atypical, we perceive the world differently than neurotic. I hope one day they change that to different ability not a disability but a different ability. We just do things to go become respective, treated as equals living in the world that wasn’t made for us work with autistic I am able to help these autistic children through my lab experience only an autistic person can mentor an autistic child. Truly, I love the way I think I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my job. I love working with autistic people. I just have a real problem with staff members bully not wanting any change. What’s the weather autistic people in regards to understanding our neotype completely I am able to do so. I am gifted in that way. nothing is hidden for me. It helps me in my work, we just use our minds differently. We cannot stop being autistic. If we put our neurotics together the things we can do you can do things. I can’t do things you can’t do. I don’t look at it as a disability. I look at it as a different ability, different abilities .
I'm a diagnosed 27 year old woman and I agree I don't c what I am or have as a disability either ❤ I hope they change the word "disorder" in ASD eventually
Thank you Lia and Cuyler for this show! I enjoyed listening to this. I'd love to connect further.
❤
Thanks. I was and still am the same way.
@@AudreyWilliams-w3p thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for this video. I am a 32 y/o male with undiagnosed autism. Up until 30 my behavioral issues were attributed to treatment resistant depression. I’ve recently learned the term, ‘hyper-empathy.’ I previously referred to these feelings as an, ‘overactive empathy,’ before I knew this is displayed in the autism population. I experience very little of my own emotions. Most of my emotional expression is masking. I do, however, experience very intense hyper-empathy. Unfortunately, it is mostly negative emotions. It’s both a gift and a curse as I do not get to choose whose emotions I take on. It is helpful being aware of the emotional state of loved ones, but I would be lying if I didn’t say there is deep torment from external sources outside my personal life. Think Will Graham from the Hannibal television series. That portrayal is the most accurate depiction of what I experience. Not the crime scene reenactment stuff, but how it effects and isolates Will along with his social deficiencies. Again, thank you for this video. I no longer feel alone.
@@AmbroseAlberts thank you for sharing your story! The more we share, the less alone people who experience this feel.
Hi. Please could you share the name or link to the research source please? Thank you 😊

5 minutes in... I am often unable to judge the emotions of others. Particularly the more subtle stuff. I have had times when I cried because of the suffering of another - in situations where nobody else is acting this way. I wonder if I am generally not perceiving the richness of emotion being broadcast by others, and sometimes it all clicks - I recognize something and, BAM I "understand". I can think of four times this has happened to me. I am sure this happens to me all the time among people I care about - to a lesser extent... I do not hear many people talk about this experience. Very interesting talk.
@@JohnBoen it's definitely an interesting phenomenon that we felt the need to explore. Thanks for sharing your story!
@autismwish I see a lot of me in my grandson. Thanks for the reminder about how I felt before I came to grips with it. And now, he will be surrounded by many more people who recognize this about him - 'cuz I won't shut up :)
Thank you for this video I thought I came here for more information on starting a clinic. But now I want to look into getting tested as a adult. Kate I would love to see videos from you telling more about your experience and preferences as an autistic adult.
@sharaydavis8571 our host (Lia) is also a late diagnosed autistic. Kate's interview was the one that led us to seek out a diagnosis too!
Hey, i got the prescription code E1236-Pediatric Ambulatory device called both Health first and Medicaid i was told 100% covered! I did the application with Baby on broadway im out of network i tried calling my local DME and when i told then wagon stroller they said no just wheelchairs any help of suggestions? Please thank you!
It seems I only ever hear of people getting these through insurance if their child is autistic. However, my daughter has two rare syndromes that effect most of her body/organs. In addition, she also has a brain injury from brain hemorrhaging as an infant, which resulted in hydrocephalus. She elopes all the time, gets tired easily, and gets headaches frequently. Having her contained but able to move around, and a place for her to lie flat to rest/sleep would be game changing! Do you think Medicaid would approve it, even if she isn't autistic? Has anyone been able to get the w4 instead of the w2? I have other, older children that sometimes use a stroller...so it would be hard to push around the w2 and a stroller. A w4 would be a lot easier.
To answer your question, you absolutely can get the W4 instead of the W2, that's what we did! I believe that medicaid typically will not cover it unless the medicaid is in the same state as the DME provider. And also there have been many kiddos who have been approved for the wagon who are not autistic. You can join the Wonderfold Warriors facebook group to chat with thousands of other special needs families who use the wagon (not just autistic): facebook.com/groups/491390325597082
What is the name of the company that I need to ask my insurance about?
The DME provider is Baby's on Broadway, however you don't need to contact them directly. You would work with Baby's on Broadway first and they would contact insurance for you and they'd let you know if you need to reach out. Www.babysonbroadway.com
I have a DME benefit with my insurance and I called them. All they want is a preauthorization so they can pay the amount they are able to and I have a letter ready if Wonderfold can give the 25% off
This is the first podcast I've listened to about autism since learning I'm on the spectrum and I loved it! Thank you for voicing your thoughts. It helped me put into words a lot of feelings that I couldn't decipher on my own. Thank you!!!
You're welcome! We are so happy to have been able to make a positive impact
Hey iv recently subscribed to your channel I am Autistic from the UK 🇬🇧 and I create Autism content too. I was late diagnosed at the age of 25, in 2014 Im Nearly 36 now. Love your channel. Yes the struggles are not really talked about I totally agree and we should talk about them I share mine often on my channel
Thanks for listening! We're glad you can relate to the content and yes, we absolutely agree that these struggles need to be talked about more often.
please keep talking about this. The autism community is very divided. These people that say they are talking for the entire autism community don't want anything bad said about autism - its a superpower, just a different way of thinking - neurodiversity garbage, they think autism or profound autism - everyone is the same as them, not allowed to say aspergers, not allowed to say anything bad, its the neurotypicals that are disordered, self diagnosis is ok, they attack Gabby's mom for speaking about this, Eileen Lamb gets death threats.... I've gotten attacked online for not agreeing with the statement that there is no such thing as mild autism, we are all the same. Why do these people even want a diagnosis? They are making it like a joke when there are a lot of people that are really struggling including parents. Dan from the Aspie world did a video today - you and him are the only ones so far talking about what's real. Something needs to be done before everyone has autism and it won't mean anything anymore.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Maybe we should try and connect with Dan for a candid conversation on this topic :) thanks for the referral
@@autismwish ok. I made a comment on his video too

Don’t forget level 2
I struggle with this especially now that my daughter is in middle school has gotten worse 😕
We completely understand, there definitely needs to be more autism awareness and acceptance in schools
My insurance was out of network and didn’t wanna help at all it is ridiculous
So sorry to hear that! Baby's on Broadway does offer a special needs discount and free shipping for those whose insurance doesn't cover it!
They said I was denied however my insurance said they never even called. HORRIBLE!!!!
P r o m o s m
I contacted this company and unfortunately they are out of network with our insurance and we do not have out of network coverage, but I was able to send this video with tons of helpful info to the DME that bills for my son’s incontinence supplies- hopefully they are able to give it a try!
Best of luck!
I also contacted them and they are also not contracted with my insurance. What state are you in?
@@amandaisaac6556 I am in Florida
I have tried them with tricare, and Medicaid. No luck with either

I would love a digital copy of the " process chart"
Check it out in the Embracing Autism Community! You'll find this printable and more under the Autism Resources channel. 😊
The biggest headache I have regarding this is how you can have two children (siblings) on the same insurance and they can't make an exception to the black and white box of "processing only one child." Each child needs it but for different purposes. They are always together and need to be in ONE stroller together cause you know, we aren't built with 5 arms! Why would we need two different strollers, to be used per kid when both kids can and need to be in ONE. The protocol and standard process makes sense but not everybody fits in that box. There should be an exception to it in uncommon cases instead of having to play a WORD and PROTOCOL GAME! Thank you for this video. You are teaching how to go about their game and still get what children need.
We get it! Insurance processes certainly need to be re-evaluated, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
If you have 2 kids that need it, is it ok to put both on the prescription?
Hello! Unfortunately, no, you would need to have two separate prescriptions and wagons. We have two children that need it, so we just filled one prescription for one child, don't mention that the other child will be using it, after the prescription is filled you can use it for both children and just have your doctor write up a note that it's for both children. You can keep that note in your wagon at all times in case anyone ever stops to question you at theme parks etc.
@@autismwishwhere do I apply for one?
@@deeaniesantana9215 babysonbroadway.com/pediatric-ambulatory-devices/
@@autismwish Unfortunately BoB won't work with our insurance and we can't find another pediatric dme company. Any chance you know of another one? We've called so many places and nobody can get the wagon.
Thank you for sharing. I'm sorry you lost your job. I hope you find a job very soon
Thank you for your kind words!
We live in South Carolina and my son has Down syndrome. I need this.
Check out the details in the video description on how to apply for yours!

I contacted them and they stated discount code is only being offered not a free insurance covered one
Did you contact Wonderfold or Baby's on Broadway? Wonderfold only offers a special needs discount. You would have to go through a DME like Baby's on Broadway to see if your insurance can cover the wagon. Not all insurances will cover it but many will.
@@autismwish i will def try baby on board way next. Thank you so much for this info!
Thank you for your perspective. I am not diagnosed with autism and have been struggling with the reality that I might be and if I want to get diagnosed. On one side, if I am not autistic, would I be appropriating autism? Am I only seeing myself as autistic because my daughter was diagnosed and I am "a little bit autistic." The fact is, at 51 years old, how could I have not noticed autism in myself? There are lots of reasons. And yes, i am going to seek diagnosis. Either I am or I am not. But thank you for your perspective and for doing this together as a couple.
You're very welcome! You may also want to look into "broader autism phenotype" or BAP. Our children's doctor brought it up and told us many parents experience some symptoms of autism but it doesn't impact them significantly enough to be considered autism, and those cases are referred to as BAP. May also be a possibility, just thought we'd share! :)
@Embracing Autism Podcast I had not heard about BAP. Though it makes sense in many ways. I feel a need to clarify myself here, my daughter is 20. There were no signs of the stereotypical autism, which I am realizing is not so typical at all. This may be BAP that I have. All I know is that the end of the Spectrum I would find myself on, would explain much of my life. From social akwardness to weird interests, to the trail of lost relationships, things make sense. Thank you again for sharing the lessons yall have learned.
So much fun thanks for having me!!
Thanks for joining!
My autistic 6yr old granddaughter is starting school the first time. Her communication type is ASL with verbal but her school has no ASL classes and they will not encourage ASL for the long term. I disagree. Should I not enroll her in this school?
Look into getting her an IEP, within the IEP you van request that ASL be supported as an accommodation. Each school should have a deaf and hard of hearing point of contact as well as an audiologist so they should be able to point you in the right direction. Schools tend to push back due to poor staffing and funding, if this happens to you, we would recommend getting an advocate to join you in the IEP meeting. If this seems like too much work, then looking for another more accommodating school may work better. But she certainly has the right to have her communication style supported in school if it's due to a disability.
Love it
Thank you!
Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Mine was out of network. 😢 But thanks for doing this!
So sorry, you can use FSA funds or HSA along with the BOB 20% discount and tax free to get it at a more reasonable cost from the DME in this video.
Does anyone know if you can get this wagon in GA through Medicaid? Did she show said wagon? I must’ve missed it bc listening while I work.
I'm not sure if you can get it through Medicaid in Georgia, I know there is a DME in south Carolina that provides them so the Medicaid in Georgia MAY have an agreement with them to cover it, but you would need to contact Medicaid to ask.
Is this a good place to find info and hear about all things in the autism for Georgia, US?
It's not Georgia-specific, but we do talk about all things Autism in the United States :) You can check out your local Autism Speaks Georgia Chapter facebook for Georgia-specific questions however!
❤ Thank you
You're welcome!
i would love to have your book please, my son James is diagnose with Autism and he is 5yrs old and still non verbal and also no potty trained
Loved this book! I even got my mother-in-law to read it and she loved it
It's pretty great!
My son’s insurance is making it difficult they don’t want to help
It can be a difficult process for some, took us 6 months of back and forth with our insurance unfortunately
Where is the form that we should fill out?
It's on the DMEs website, Baby's On Broadway: www.powr.io/form-builder/i/27332775#page
What insurances do accept this???
Hi! We would recommend you contact the DME directly at babysonbroadway.com/. They should have a phone number listed and someone who can answer your insurance questions!
