Strange Vacations - at the borders of sarek deep winter void
Video from an early winter hike starting in Kvikkjokk, going up north on Gamajåhkå, Tjuoldajåhkå, Buojdesjåhkå, crossing Buojdes lake before descending on Padjalentaleden and returning back to Kvikkjokk. This route might not be travelled frequently because it is bit less spectacular. It was my first time going in January and I expected the worst possible conditions however it turned out to be surprisingly friendly. I had soft and deep snow conditions in Februaries on previous trips which had me sinking in badly. So this time I turned to big freestyle ski (sort of copying the concept of OAC Skinbased "gliding snowshoes" but with the usual Rottefella NNN-BC manual bindings) and a narrower but longer pulka (Fjellpulken 168cm instead of a short but wider Acapulka). The idea was to have less of a sinking in effect because of larger overall surface areas and also have the pulka fit into my wide ski tracks and therefore less of a drag from the “submarine” effect were the pulka moves more under the powder than above. I think this worked well and I will continue using this combination on trips early in the year and away from solid trails. For this tour all these efforts turned out unnecessary though. Snow conditions were as good as possible, hardly any sinking in, and it was practically wind still all the time - something I have never experienced before. Temperatures where between minus 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Daylight hours were longer than I expected. Although the sun is only about 3 hours above the horizon I would say there are about 6 hours of usable daylight altogether. Sorry for the lack of any narration or explanation in the video! ;)
Anybody interested in going on this route: it was more on the easy side of things. The road to Kvikkjokk is well maintained in winter and this cute village is very accessible. There is even a daily bus (except on Sundays). I found the Kungsleden parking area cleared from snow on Monday morning January 15th. There was no other car there however it looked like there was some activity on the weekend and fresh snowmobile tracks led to the first hunting huts on the shores of Gamajåhkå. After I passed those huts there was no sign of other people in the area. There was a two meter waterfall squeezed between two giant rocks which forced me up a steep embarkment (Tjuoldajåhkå not so far below Tjårok). Days later I saw two about 200 meters wide slab avalanches in the lower third of Skieevvun. High up on the west side of this mountain was an area which looked like a potential avalanche to me. This made me stick to my original plan to keep well south of Buojdesjåhkå and high up. There I came across some steep and icy areas covered with a thin layer of snow all so slippy I had to switch to snow shoes with crampons. On Padjelantaleden it was not always obvious to me when to take the river and when I would be better off to take the marked summer trail. I should have researched this better because it was my impression I made some wrong decisions. When I reached Såmmarlappastuga I was surprised someone was there three days before me coming from Kvikkjokk on Padjelantaleden and returning the same way. The first sporadic snow mobile tracks I saw near Njunjes. It seemed like some people live around there in winter. Of course I missed the fact these people take the summer trail with their snow mobiles so I took the river only to find myself fighting my way around waterfalls and half frozen rocky rapids. Once I made the cut through the forest to get on Padjelentaleden it was easy to get to Kvikkjokk.

      Sorry for the late reply. I made those and all other graphic animations with Adobe After Effects (old version CS6 - before Adobe changed to a subscription model). These are a bit complicated to do. Check this tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/p2O2VYm0uvo/v-deo.html I assume there is other software to accomplish this effect in a simpler way.

    i t looks like you dont have an innertent. is it better with out

    • @sareksolo2571
      @sareksolo2571 4 дні тому

      I personally prefer the single wall approach for winter camping. Reasons: 1. The inner tent is basically a bag hanging from the outer tent so it does not add to the stability of the tent (with this Hilleberg construction at least) unless maybe the tent gets disintegrated in a storm and the weight of your body inside the inner tent keeps the remaining scraps of fabric on the ground :-) 2. In sub -5 degrees Celsius conditions the concept of ventilation between inner and outer tent just does NOT prevent condensation - so you end up with two additional heavy frosted surfaces and no benefit at all 3. It is snowing a lot INSIDE the tent (condensation) and it takes time to brush out all the snow from the inner tent through the door. In the morning time is short and if there is snow/ ice everywhere anyway I feel like I can skip the inner and it does not even make much of a difference 3. The inner tent is more a psychological thing suggesting security (sunny yellow color) where there is actually little certainty in case of a heavy storm. I prefer to see what is going on with the outer tent in a drama situation 4. The inner tent steals a lot of room which I need for my huge pulka, very long sleeping bag (235cm), incredible loft of the hood of my down jacket (headroom) - as soon as you scratch the ceiling it will start to snow on your equipment. I feel that extra fabric of the inner to be just in the way 5. I have an Exped Doublemat which serves as a slightly isolated floor. This mat also works well in dirty huts and stugas as a clean base for my Exped Downmat 6. access to the snow on the ground from the inside of the tent allows for digging holes, leveling and building „furniture“ matching tasks to do.

      Thank you! In May there could be a lot of melting water and unstable ice. It is neither winter nor summer. But I have not tried that season myself and every year is different. Personally I would stay on the trails in that month, I think. On the trails you have bridges over unstable rivers. The Swedish mountains should be warmer than Finland due to its proximity to the Atlantic gulf stream whereas Finland is close to Siberia and the North Pole ;-) (just joking!)

    Last year, coming back to Kvikkjokk from my Sarek crossing, I didn't met any snowmobile track before Nunjes. So I was on the river, until being blocked by running water and snow walls between rocks 😅 then I aimed for the summer trail, on the forest...what a mess it was 😂 waist deep snow, a 700m progress in 1h, awful. I was so relieved on the other side to be able to follow tracks on the river... gosh ! Thanks again for this video, and the previous one which led me to do my round trip in Kvikkjokk 🙌 cheers mate !

      Danke! Not sure what your question is :-) I am wearing small prescription type glasses and above those swiveling „Julbo Sniper Glasses“ (these work well together). I also have an Airtrim cold protection mask that fits below both of those glasses (I think I‘m not wearing these in this video). If you are referring to fogging issues in combination of all items together: this works however (!) you might have to add some airtight foam around your nose to avoid ANY (!) air escaping up under your glasses. Otherwise you will get fogging. Additional foam is hard to attach because the Airtrim material does not allow to glue. You have to do some sewing job. Also I had to attach a second rubber on the Airtrim to avoid any slipping on my head.

      Kvikkjokk is safe to start. Just go downhill near the church to get to the summer boat dock. You will see snowmobile tracks on the lake and markings on the lake. Snow shoes are fine for a start but if you put the long skins under your ski you might as well start with those as a beginner. Just don‘t do that in an ongoing snow storm ;) Preferences vary a lot. I need a big tent for all that stuff (cooking, pulka, length of my sleeping bag is 235cm…). Winter camping is not difficult but really really uncomfortable!

    Thank you. Love the film, great atmosphere and sound! I have been there several times in summer. Would like to try a not too challenging winter trip of three or four days with a pulka and snow shoes (no experience of xc ski’s, snow shoes look to be more intuitive) any was thinking of starting in Kvikkjokk and following part of the padjelanta trail. Do you know if the river at Kvikjokk towards padjelanta for safe passage? The part where in the summer you take a boat to the start of the trail. Its fast water, so maybe not frozen. Would welcome any suggestions for an easy first winter route that could fit? I have winter skills, but would. be a first for snow shoe winter backpacking/sled pulling, so looking to learn by doing.

      Kvikkjokk is a very good starting point. The lake had route markings and many snow mobile tracks even in January. I saw some locals in the distance walking their dogs on the lake on the morning when I came back. I would suggest going to Nunjes direction as a beginner. Not so far and you have options to extend your trip if things go well.

      Hi, it was late summer so there wasn't any snow at the altitude where I crossed and it was safe to do so. At the south side (below Pårte observatory) where I got onto the ice I did see some frightening deep glacial mills right away (I did hear the water roaring deep down there). I did not dare to get anywhere close to them because the ice was extremely slippy there and I did not bring crampons. After maybe 300 meters on the ice it was all solid without any cracks or mills untill I crossed to the other side (north). Also the ice was not slippy anymore. Looking west (uphill) I did see many cracks in the steeper sections of the glacier. Those areas were also still snow covered and not safe to enter alone and without precautions.

    Such a well-planned expedition through nature’s raw beauty was captured brilliantly, thank you. I do have to echo the questions already raised by others: How did you get back to your car? How did you cross those rivers without risking your life? Your tent arrangement was, well, different to most other intrepid hikers across the northern wastes. Not the usual HB black label with groundsheet we often see. Why is that? Ah! I see you answered this already. Home made? Well I never.

      Thank you! There is a small seasonal bus in March and April. I commented in more detail somewhere below. Yes, I am very aware of the dangers involved in such a hike - however in the big picture these are pretty much entry level tours and risks compared to what many other people are doing these days. Judging the rivers and lakes is somehow not so difficult when you are there. If you go well informed and equipped I believe this to be less risky than taking a bicycle in big European city :-) Winter camping is really (!) uncomfortable though!

I took care of the "unnamed kota" vid Kåtokjåkk (t ex en ny kamin) over 20 years in a time where nobody hittade katan - bäcken som rinner förbi fanns och finns ju aldrig i kartan. Så det var hopplös att leta efter den, den ligger ju mycket längre nere i dalen än vad man tror. Med GPS är det nya tider nu. Jag gissar att du hittade katan med GPS? Eller har du hittat den själv?

On the way back on a different route I still did not see it. The map is really missing all terrain details so it is impossible to tell exact locations. I finally resorted to cheating, warmed up my iphone and had a quick GPS look there. Even than I had to get as close as 100m to see the kota well hidden under the snow.

Very interesting and informative, and, as I'm planning to go there early February, it gives me food for thoughts and useful sights. Still unsure if I will stay on the Padjelanta side, or if I will go inside Sarek's majestic wilderness. It will probably depend on the weather forecast and snow conditions. Any recommendations for an early February trip ? Do you feel that crossing the lake from Ritsem would be a safe bet at this period of time? Mike.

    • @sareksolo2571
      @sareksolo2571 Рік тому

      Thank you! Getting to Ritsem early February can be difficult. There is no bus connection yet and there is hardly anyone out there. The road will be cleared only at random behind Kebnats/ Saltoluokta for some very few Vattenfall and Sami people who have business there. If you want to be on the safe side you have to come with a big 4 x 4 and snow chains. This winter (23/24)has been cold so far and I’m quite sure you can cross Akkajaure early February on skis. But of course I’m not in a position to give you a „go“ because in the end I don’t know. I assume they will measure the ice thickness and mark a route around mid February preparing for the winter season starting at the end of February. When I crossed there in early March of 22 I noticed the markings to be different than on the map. Route in front of Ritsem was north west along the shore about 1,5 Km (Västra Ritsenjåhkå - avoiding the underwater outlet right in front of Ritsem!) before turning to the south end of those unnamed islands in the middle of the lake. From there it was a straight line to the summer boat dock (Änonjalmme). Kvikkjokk is a better option in early winter. It is an all year settlement with a regular (big size) bus connection to Jokkmokk. Road is good and clearad at all times. Beware of Jokkmokk Winter Market early February. All accommodations might be booked. From Kvikkjokk you could go up Padjelantaleden, go through Sarvesvagge to Rapadalen and back to Kvikkjokk on Kungsleden. I have met two women who made that route in mid February. So it might be possible - although the west side of Sarvesvagge looks scary to me on the map regarding avalanches. Overall early winter is really challenging!

      @@sareksolo2571 thanks for your reply, really appreciate 🙏 as the winter bus will only start at the very end of February, ritsem might be a no go. Do you know if there could be a way to get a drop at kebnats (local / taxi / other) at this period of time? Otherwise I will have to make my way from and to Kvikkjokk. I will have a look for the market, but as I will bring the tent, it doesn't bother me to start with a cold night on the outside 😁

      I had "Jokkmokks Taxi" drop me off at Suorva in 2020 (not cheap). They are about the only Taxi company somewhat close to that area doing this. You are better off making an appointment because they can be quite busy doing medical transports in the area. They might also be a source of information. Than there is Fiskflyg :-)@@mikecharlie9909

    Haunting, magnetic, somewhat risky too. You have a new subscriber 👍🇬🇧. Interesting pitching (no inner?) and packing away of your Hilleberg. No messing about there.

      Thank you! Yes, I don’t like the inner tent in winter. For me just two additional surfaces that will be heavily covered with ice crystals. The inner tent does not increase the stability I think (it is just a bag hanging from the outer tent) but it takes away a lot of space and is in the way (outer dimension of my sleeping bag 235cm!). The loft of the hood of my down jacket needs extra headroom. When bumping into the ceiling it snows inside the tent and that is not nice. I just don’t see any benefit of the inner tent in extreme cold conditions. Instead I use an Exped Doublemat as a floor.

    Fantastic trip! I can almost feel the cold here. What type of camera do you use? Do they work well in the cold? Hope you post more videos , just love it !

      Thank you!. Most of it is shot with an older GoPro Hero 6 in 2.7K mode. When temperatures drop below -20 Celsius in the night the camera tends to go to its factory default settings on the first take in the morning. After one or two takes some internal heat will be generated and the camera works as expected. I am scared to buy a newer model because you never know what the quirks will be. I also have a Lumix S5 with a Sigma 1.4/ 20mm and a Canon 1.2/ 50mm (both with Canon EF mount and an adapter for Lumix). To my surprise this camera worked flawlessly at temperatures of -30 Celsius although not rated for this use by the manufacturer. I power both cameras externally with a cable and big batteries wich I keep close to my body the whole time while the tiny internal batteries are removed. The GoPro is wrapped in Fabric to reduce wind noise on the internal mics. I also have a separate sound recorder and microphones with wind protection.

    Fantastic trip, excellent video. Nice equipment you have. What tent is that and what goggles or eye wear is that? I like how it flips up out of the way.

      Thank you! Google for:„Julbo sniper goggles“. Tent is a Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT. I attached some „snowflaps“ myself. In this video Mr. Hilleberg explains why he does not believe in snowflaps: ua-cam.com/video/w5R1c52FmaY/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared However I don‘t think this to be the full picture because he keeps pointing at the top of the tent. My worries are storm winds getting under the tent once the surrounding terrain transforms. This happens when all the snow relocates in a stormy night. Also the whole tent might deform in wind gusts so wind could easily get under the tent. Under deep snow conditions it is difficult to solidly tie down the base of the tent with pegs. These are some of the reasons why I made this addition to an otherwise great all purpose tent.
