Installing the G8 on a 2024 Arctic Cat Catalyst
This is the first in a series of videos on the new G8 disdplay by Garmin for Arctic Cat Catalysts. My 2024 Catalyst ZR came with the new "Sport" display last year and I decided to up[grade. Follow along as I install the G8 and then show you how to use it. This is the install video, more videos soon!

Excellent video. Thank you so much for posting. Mine was factory installed but its nice to know the ins and outs of the G8. If folks that want to retrofit AND purchase the new Bat Wing you can always go with a color if so desired. Mine is the all Black ZR with Red trim. Question - After install does the wiring or any other piece interfere with the spare belt storage?
@@jimt4906 Thank you! The spare belt doesn’t interfere at all. In fact, the belt helps keep any stray wires under control. Congrats on the new sled!
Great video

Is there any worry about having to rebalance the entire clutch with the new ( although balanced) cover on? Considering that the original clutch cover was indexed and balanced with the entire clutch but the new has not, it would seem that it could set the entire balance off.
@@danielgailis5700 That’s a great question, and one I didn’t address in the video. I agree that the clutch was balanced originally with the cover on and asked Thunder Products about that and they said they have no concerns about the balance. I doubt it’s much different than installing new flyweights, but my first reaction was the same as yours. When I talked to Brady at BDX last year, their clutch cover is the same way. Maybe it’s a bigger concern with cast parts.
@@ponycarfan I like the idea of the stronger billet cover so I am glad to hear that the balance doesn't seem to be much of an issue. I appreciate the feedback!
Looks like you are ready for pulling ice fishing sleds across the lake!

We had the push frame bend on the new upgraded push frame. They made us buy a second push frame, that bent too. Both times it was mild use. They do not stand behind their products. KFIs bend all the time.
@@MNsportsman Wow! I thought the new push frame was built a lot better than the old generation, and am surprised to hear that. The plow has been good to us, but I’ll keep a close eye on the frame this season.
I bought my Mission December of 23. So far the negative for me is the fact that your not supposed to open the visor when you have the sun shield down as it can damage the cables and the shield if i remember correctly. Positive for me was riding in 5 below Fahrenheit temps and feeling the heat coming off the shield. Good luck with your helmet!
@@MrCrflover Thanks!
I’m a big fan of Thunder Products clutch stuff, I also run their gates belt
@@joshcarlson8429 When I spoke to them at Hay Days, I was impressed - they know their stuff!
My new Catalyst came with it. So far I have quite a few issues with it. The UI as usual is sub-par because everything Garmin makes has a crap UI. I don't like how the ATAC shocks work (again, very poor UI). I haven't found a way to set the maps to top-down rather than 3D. And since the thing won't power on unless you start the sled (even with electric start) it's not like I can play with it.
@@robgoffroad Yeah, I have asked them for a way to power the unit without starting the engine and am told there's currently no way to do it. As far as I can tell, the G8 internal battery is good for about an hour at full backlight and you can set the auto shutoff for up to 30 minutes. But, you have to start the engine to get it powered on. I'm disappointed that you couldn't change 3D to top down, and will investigate. On the ATAC, have you had that before? I have found it a little confusing, especially at first. That applies to the previous display, imo.
@@robgoffroad I have not powered up my G8 yet, but looking at the way all Garmins appear to work, and looking back on this video footage, I think it's consistent. When displaying the map, there's an up arrow on the right. Touch the arrow, and that should give you the option for 2D north up, 2D direction up or 3D. Next time you start the sled, change auto shutoff to 30 minutes, then display the map and give that a try. If I get to mine before you do, I'll let you know what I find out.
@@ponycarfan I went out there and fired up the sled to power up the unit, then shut down the sled. I played around a bit but could not find out how to set the timeout. I DID find out that you CAN set the map to top-down view and where north is always up, just the way I like it. So that much is good. It says its battery is only at 36% and so the only way to charge it is to run the sled. Grrr. I was reading the manual and it says break in is in two stages -- Stage 1 is 18 minutes with a lot of extra oil, Stage 2 is three hours with more oil than normal, but not as much as Stage 1. So I don't want to just idle the thing wasting time for Stage 1 of break-in. I still can't believe Cat couldn't be bothered to tie this thing to the sled's battery.
Another helpful video Thanks for posting .
@@christopherpike3073 I sincerely appreciate that. Glad you liked it!
Very helpful Thank you
Was there a warranty disclaimer when you bought the part? I wonder if Cat would void it?
That's a good question. There's no disclaimer. I think this is a safe modification, as long as the brake disk remains loose. The torque spec given by Precision EFI is plenty safe to avoid a problem with that. The upside is that this would potentially save a rider from a warranty claim or failure down the road after the warranty expires. The downside is that it could cause a problem with the brake if over-torqued (which is pretty hard to do). Still, I think it's a valid concern - this mod is not sold or promoted by Arctic Cat.
The wheel above the scratcher holder is going to break those off when your suspension bottoms.
@@jonathancameron2136 I’ll take a look at that. Thanks for pointing it out!
I checked, and it's going to be really, really close. Without compressing the suspension it's hard to tell, but I'm going to investigate further. Good eye - thank you!
Titanium is 45% lighter than steel so 4.7 pounds for titanium roughly. 18 pounds less than stock. Cool
Don’t go too fast 😂
@@Joeys990 😂 Yeah, I don’t think that’ll be a problem.
So I take it you put the existing cables along with the new set of cables onto the bracket correct
@@CharlesJacquez-q9d Yes. I believe you’re talking about the junction block, and that’s used to connect the old and new cables so that they can run all the way to the back.
@@ponycarfan thank you so much, I just ordered my kit
I was hoping you would spend a little more time explaining the terminal block. It had four bolts on it did you fasten pos and neg to the outside amd the new cables to the inside ones, or do they got put onbthe same one ? I couldnt see.
Looks good. I like the assistant too.
I installed a set last year on my XC850. They work awesome. I’ll never run a cable style again.
I put mine on last year. Never got to use the sled let alone the scratchers. Hopefully, a much better winter for everyone! What is the assistant's name?
@@jimellis8051 Hollie. 😀 Whether we actually need scratchers or not is still unclear, but I think it's worth the price to have the option. Did you use them on your ProCross ZR's? On my Riot, I use them about 80% of the time trail riding. The One Rig kits are really foolproof, better than drilling, imo.
I don't have a Go-Pro mounted, but I did end up grinding down that tab a bit on the sheild so it didn't snap/un-snap so hard. Otherwise, it was a two hand endeavor. Still seals just fine.
That's a great idea, thank you!
Great video !
It’s cool, but with a little tighter budget I’ll save my $1500 for gas and oil and just use the GPS maps on my phone if I get twisted around out riding. However if it’s in your budget it’s a very cool gauge.
@@yamajammer76 That's a great point. The fun of snowmobiling is not related to how much we spend.
I bought one of these lights a few years ago…the riders in my group all were so impressed they all bought them. They are bright and work well. The 3 way is a game changer. I just picked up the color changing one at Haydays. You can’t alway see your brake light in the snow dust but you can always see the helmet.
I also picked up the locking cord.
That's a great point about being able to see the helmet. Do you have a preference for color?
@@ponycarfan I run green…each person has a different color (arctic cat guy). They are all bright and easy to see.
I have it in green. Not blasting brands but in snow dust at speed my light is the only one visible. Saying that my riding buddies only use oxygen helmets so I don’t know about other brands visibility
That's good to know! I don't have a lot of experience following someone with a lighted helmet and wondered if there was a difference in color (when it comes to visibility).
2 notes on these. 1 You can whisper to your rear passenger if you have one. The way they exhaust they can hear you clearly. 2- make absolutely sure to fit these before buying one. Missions are by far the most returned helmet we have because not enough people do that. They have a problem with squishing most peoples cheeks. Do not assume if you are xl with a titan that you will be an XL with a Mission.
@@guyincognito1431 Thank you! I'll pin this, so more people can see it.
I'm getting one in hopes that it will fix the weird mid 20s shift that the Team does.
@@guyincognito1431 It does resolve that. Some people seem to be able to tune their way out of it, but the Adapt is a better solution in my opinion.
Congrats on the Mission. You’re going to absolutely love it. The entire family has them and they work amazing. It’s so nice not to worry about fogging with my wife and daughter. They put the helmets on and are ready to go in about 2 minutes. No worry’s about the chin curtain either. It’s not an issue. Minor thing to get used to is the silicone nose piece in the morning. It’ll get cold while you’re getting ready and the first time you close the helmet and have the cold silicone across your nose you’ll notice it. It’ll take about 15 seconds for it to warm up and you’re good.
@@StreetersGarage Thanks for the advice!

Great review! I currently have a 2014 ZR 9000 limited and I am considering upgrading to the 2024 9000 riot with the power steering. I have always ridden a 129 track and love to trail ride, so my only concern is that the 146 will be very hard to handle in the corners. Do you think the 10 additional years of engineering will make up for the loss of handling with the longer track? Basically I'm asking if the much newer version will handle close to as well as my 2014 even though the track is 146...
@@BrockoM You might consider the Thundercat with EPS, because of the shorter track. The Riot 9000 is a great sled, but it does push a bit - that long track really likes to go in a straight line. The trails I ride are generally tighter and twistier, and any Riot is going to need a bit more attention than the shorter-tracked sleds. For rail beds, the longer track works as an advantage, because it’s more stable at higher speeds. EPS makes steering on both the Tcat and Riot so effortless that you can take it for granted. The Riot needs you to anticipate turns and get ready ahead of time. I made a video titled “1,000 subscriber special” and I tell a story about someone else’s misadventure on the Riot 9000, and I think part of the problem for him was forgetting to plan ahead, something that’s required on the Riot. He probably would’ve been fine on the Thundercat. Arctic Cat has made steady improvements to the ProCross chassis and you may be fine with either, but the Tcat would probably be my preference between the two.
@@ponycarfan Thanks for the excellent explanation! I am curious if you have ever ridden a sled with Snow Tracker carbides? I have had them on my last 3 Arctic Cats and they are amazing! The virtually eliminate darting and are much more predictable in the corner because they are so aggressive. I would definitely be buying a set of those if I got the new RIOT, so I think that would drastically improve the handling. Any thoughts?
@@BrockoM I haven’t tried them, but am always looking for something to improve the handling on my 8000 Riot. Thank you!
