Portable Magic
Приєднався 16 чер 2010
Hi, I'm Trinity. I read modern SFF, horror, and historical fiction. Here, I discuss all the books I read. Some months, it's all fantasy, and sometimes I read YA. Sometimes I'm positive, and sometimes I'm not. I have ADHD so sometimes my videos are just a mess. But I hope you enjoy and stick around.

May the Force Read with You Readathon - My stack of possibilities!
Me adding more books to my TBR xD
@@Serafijm yay!!
Oh noooo, T.T I picked up Hunters Gambit on a whim because it sounded good and I was kind of craving a Romantasy, but I am not typically a romance reader at all.. Here's to hoping it's a guilty pleasure for me! ❤ Also hi, new here
@@KittenCece hello, and welcome 😊 I really hope it works out for you. A few of my friends really loved it.
I don’t think I’m a cozy fantasy person, I’ve only tried two books but they tend to bore me. I like fantasy because of high stakes and action and despite it being nice to have a happy, comfy world, I just can’t get into them. It feels rare to hear anyone be indifferent or dislike the type of genre
@BooksToAshes same! Give me all the stakes. The Honey Witch had some great action at the end, but that took the whole book to get there 🙈 I am going to give this one last one a try and if I don't like it, I'm going to give up. Emily Wilde will be determined a fluke. 🤣
@@trinforeman54 Haha I hope you enjoy it 🤞 but if not then at least we still got our fantasy
Whatever you end up getting to, I hope it will be a wonderful reading month!! So curious to hear your thoughts on The Phoenix Keeper, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you hahah
@@esmayrosalyne I feel like I set out to torture myself. I'm determined to find a cozy I love, even if I don't love anything about them. What's wrong with me? 🤣🙈
@@trinforeman54 Maybe this will be the unicorn read that does it for you 🤣
I finished The Crystal Cave back in June and was disappointed with it. I have a review coming soon but I hope you enjoy it when you read it.
@@intotheheartwyld I remembered you saying that you didn't like it. 🤞
im in the same read or un haul mode. lots of books going to the lil free library
@PoorPersonsBookReviewer unhauling makes me feel so good. I love when I look at my shelves and they are all books I love ❤️
I loved The Unwilling. I keep meaning to reread it so I can read the sequel, The Broken Tower. Thanks for the reminder. I'm adding them to my 2025 list. With 2 huge reread projects this year (Sanderson & Tad Williams) I am going to focus on shorter series next year.
@@angelamccollister ohh. That's quite the reread stack 👀
Girl I feeeel you, it's almost like my brain makes it a sport to keep putting off the books that I think I will enjoy and idk why!!! 🤣🤣 I hope these all live up to your expectations. Eleventh Cycle is getting a re-release though, so you might want to wait until that revised version is out. Happy reading 🥰
@@esmayrosalyne I will keep that in mind.
Your edition of the night ends with fire is so stunning!!
Thank you 😊
Love your shirt! And i'm totally not jealous of the K.X. Song book xD
@Serafijm thank ya! I love it, too.
Haha honestly so many of these are on my priority TBR too! Traitor God, The Lost War, Red Sister, Nemesis!! and most of the others are on my Want to Read it eventually list! 😂
I have read The Darkness that Comes Before and thought it was interesting, I decided not to continue with the series for 2 reasons, 1 is that the writing itself is just really dense and I prefer more straightforward stuff (I didn't necessarily find it overly philosophical at least and you can enjoy it at face value without deep diving) it was more the prose itself that was dense and 2 is that it was written at a time when his publishers weren't happy about having so much dark content so he had to kind of dance around the edges of some darker events while keeping other dark things front and center and detailed (like he had to pick his battles with editors/publishers about what was important to include in detail for future plot threads or something etc.) but it left me feeling like it was kind of bizarre that the attitude or tone surrounding things didn't feel very consistent! 😂 Maybe those will be things that won't bother you or maybe you'll have similar complaints? It will be interesting to see! YAY for Nemesis! I also need to reread the trilogy so I can get to that one! My TBR this year is pretty booked up but if you end up not getting to it we could make it a buddy readalong early next year if you want! 🥳 I think with night angel Durzo's character is sexist but the attitude of the other characters is not. I could see why people would have that feedback but to me it really stands out some characters in the story and not the author.
@TheChapterConundrum Ohh, that's good to know. Dense writing I can do but I do wonder about some dark things being brushed over. Hmmm. Yeah, I don't really see the sexism associated with Lightbringer but in recording I was like, "well, okay, maybe Night Angel is a bit" but the complaint that Weeks is sexist bugs me. 🙈
I’ve been SOO slumpy this year and I’ve been reading so much romance, but now I’m starting to crave that good, epic hard fantasy, so I completely feel you on wanting to change it up. Hopefully you pick something amazing up this or next month ♥️🤞
@@BooksToAshes hope you do, too!
What an amazing list! Never been so hyped for so many books! All these books are on my list, most already were 😆 Gunmetal Gods I’ll get to first as soon as that ultimate edition comes, should be real soon! Very curious to hear your thoughts on Eleventh Cycle and Black Company! Hope Kagen continues to deliver the goods! So many others here I’m excited for you to get to as well! 🤘🏽
@bardsandbooks I am so dang excited to get to these! Ohh, ultimate edition. I need to look into this.
The Traitor God is soooo good!!! I really hope you enjoy it when you read it. There are a lot on this list that I still need to read as well! Looking forward to hearing how you enjoy these picks.
@intotheheartwyld definitely looking forward to getting back to reading these types of books.
Start the Witcher with the Last Wish and end with the Tower of Swallow. After each book listen to the podcast ETL Witcher Book Club. The last book is a hot mess, I pretend it does not exist. You are better off reading the prequel, the Season of Storms at the end.
@@heidi6281 Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. 😊
I'd truly never heard of PMDD before, sorry to hear that you suffer from that! Sending hugs 🤍 Glad that these books could provide some comfort and joy. I definitely need to get back into O'Keefe's works, and I also really want to try The Merciful Crow because I feel like we have very similar YA fantasy tastes. Happy reading!
@@esmayrosalyne I definitely think you would enjoy Margaret Owen. Dark but not super dark, great world-building, great characters, exciting plots! Yeah, PMDD really sucks.
I'm excited for Not In Love by Ali Hazelwood as well 🎉 I just found out about the Crave stuff/lawsuit the other day too...wild stuff!
@TheChapterConundrum Kinda wish I had know before I invested. That's why I figured I'd point it out.
@@trinforeman54 Makes total sense! I haven't read them and don't think I will at this point. 😅
Oooh don't mind me adding all the ones I haven't read yet to the top of my priority list!! I have started Stardust Grail and Uncle is already an absolute hoot 🤣 Can't wait to read on! And heeeck yes for Blood Heir, EotD and the Carissa Broadbent love 😍
@@esmayrosalyne love Uncle!!! He's precious.
Nice list. Only familiar with Kagen and Tainted Cup, they definitely deserve spots on these kinds of list. You should read Poison Rose soon, it's even more action packed! We meet more of the brothers, and they're . . . . characters, to say the least 😂 Stardust Grail sounds really good, haven't seen it before. I'll have to read it at some point.
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels Thank you. I'm so excited for more Kagen. The Stardust Grail may be a contender for my best book of the year. 🤫
Thank you! Love Nora Roberts!
Thank you for answering my question on five broken blades. I’ll never read that
😂 same
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads I'm still mad. 🙈
Love a good unhaul
Yay thank you for tagging me for this one Trin! Oohhh you love Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. I loved it too. I read it years ago and had only heard of one other person talking about it. It was so raw and heart wrenching and because it was based on a true story, I wanted to be in her experience AND it was the only story I had ever read set in Iceland! Girl I don't get on with Stephen King's writing style AT ALL either! I just finished 2 of his last month in Gwendy's Button Box series but after book 2 I don't care to continue it. I sampled a few others and solid pass on the writing style. I...just...can't...🙈
@@HereThereBeStories He's also my mother's favorite. I just don't get it. I want to find more like Burial Rites, so if you have a recommendation, I'd love it.
I’ve heard quite a few people talk about how bad the representation of polyamory is in Evocation. It definitely sounds like Gibson did not have sensitivity readers for this representation. Sounds like the book is more of the cheating trope than actual polyamory. It’s great that you talked to people who do live that lifestyle to make sure you weren’t projecting your feelings, I know a few myself and just hearing what happened in the book gave me the same feelings as you.
@intotheheartwyld yeah. It was bad. I've written a poly story and had my own sensitivity readers and such. Really felt like it wasn't even attempted here.
Ohhh thanks for tagging me this will be a fun to do! I really need to get to the Robin Hood series by Stephen R Lawhead, I have owned them for a few years and I love the tale of Robin Hood, I don’t know why I keep putting it off haha.
Like me with Godblind. Makes no sense. 🤣
Throne of the Fallen is so good, you will love IT!!!
I'm very excited!
So excited for The Silverblood Promise, I’m really hoping it will be amazing since there isn’t much that I’m interested in this year.
Yeah, it's kinda been an oversaturation of fantasy romance.
Booooook haul!!!!!!!
omg I just left a comment that was 100% on a different video... but it appeared here on your video?!?!?! UA-cam is on drugs apparently lol sorry if you saw a comment notification that made no sense that edition of The Honey Witch is soooo pretty!
@JashanaC I've had some pop up that I'm like... huh?!? So yeah, UA-cam is insane sometimes. 🤣
Love me a good tag!! You really need to get into Gwynne's sequel series!! And I am curious to hear your thoughts on Godlbind when you get to it for sure. Also, you are making me so desperate to get to The Stardust Grail!
@esmayrosalyne I am sure you'll enjoy it. So fun and so sweet. I am falling so far behind on my epics/grimdark. I really need to pick more up. I'm hoping that with not as many fantasy on the docket this month, I'll have renewed desire for them.
@@trinforeman54 sometimes the mood just takes you somewhere else! I hope you find some new faves when you get back into them though!! I'd recommend The Storm Beneath the World by Michael R. Fletcher, Soul Cage by L.R. Schulz, The House of Starling by Ciara Hartford, Die Young by Morgan Shank and Riven Earth by Zammar Ahmer!!
@@esmayrosalyne Ohh! Thanks for the recs!
Oooh just found your channel. I put down five broken blades early on but didn’t officially dnf it. If that’s where it’s headed I’m definitely not going to finish it up. What a let down ❤
@@MeghanReadsFantasy Welcome 😊😊 Omg, the biggest disappointment. I'm still mad 🙈
@@trinforeman54 I had just watched rebel moon on Netflix, so I’d JUST gotten the same “here are our characters, here are their backstories” setup, so I was like mmmmmm I’m kind of over this vibe so let me pick up something else. Haven’t touched it since
@@MeghanReadsFantasy Is Rebel Moon any good? It has been calling me.
@@trinforeman54 it’s not AMAZING, but it’s fun to watch even through you kinda know what’s gonna happen. The second half had too many harvesting montages. Like a long time harvesting wheat.
Dead Until Dark has Elvis as a vampire.
@@roseanahall5430 Charlaine Harris!!! I knew it had to be that era of vampire book! Lol
I’d have to agree with everything you said on the beastly characters section lol Thanks for the tag 🤘🏽
@@bardsandbooks ❤️❤️❤️
Yay, Im glad you did the tag! 🎉 You got my channel right! Thanks for the sweet things you had to say! 💗💗 Dont feel bad, I still haven’t gotten to Malice 😂🙈 I need to check out several of the books you mentioned in this video! Haha I read plenty of Grimdark with beastly characters too so i had a hard time deciding how to answer that prompt too! I knew I had heard the quote somewhere but I forgot it was King!! Now i know why Jake got the blame lol!! I would be curious to see how you get on with Dolores Claiborne because its definitely my fav King and has great pacing compared to his other books! The humour is on point too!
@TheChapterConundrum Grimdark and Undead were entirely too hard 🤣 I'm like, oh lord... all of the books I read. 🙈 TFATF is so good. I struggled with the first book, but once I finished it, I needed more. I've completely written off ever reading King again, but that one does intrigue me. To be completely fair, they all do. I just have such a hard time with his meandering. He adds to my issues with ADHD.
@@trinforeman54 Yeah! Grimdark and Undead were hard to narrow down for me as well! Also for undead I was having a harder time thinking about a case that was completely spoiler free too! 😂 I'm excited to get around to FATF! I think I will need brainpower when I pick it up to keep track of everything but once I get into it it should be smooth sailing! Haha I don't blame you on writing off reading more King. The movie for Dolores is pretty good too. Not an exact adaptation but still a good time & would give you a good feel for the story. It stars Kathy Bates too! 🥳
Genuinely so delighted to see you gushing over The Blood Heir, that series is so underrated!! And you are making me extremely excited to get to The Stardust Grail 🤩🤩
@@esmayrosalyne oh, it's SO good! I'm sure you will love it!! I'm kicking myself for not picking up Blood Heir earlier. I'm still shocked at how good it was.
I thought the sky on fire left off so there could potentially be a book 2!
@caitlinl2750 yeah, I could become a series. But as of now, standalone.
I have a special edition of Among Thieves lol I still haven’t read it though. I’m the same way, I hate when big events take place off page and that might be why I don’t like cozy books, I want to be in the middle of what’s happening.
Exactly!
Gods of the Wyrdwood was not my favourite RJ Barker, but I still loved it. He is just head and shoulders above soooo many other fantasy authors for me, that imagination!!! And omg I really need you to love Will of the Many hahah. Happy reading!! 🤩
Yes! Agree! I am hoping I love them both.
Love the Mass Effect Dragon Age (I think?) stickers in the background! Some of my fav games And I just added The Devoured World Series to my want to read list. I need to read more Sci-fi!
Yass! Huge BioWare fan here. 😊 I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Good luck, I hope they all deliver 5 shiny stars 🌟 I might also take a short detour from fantasy soon
Even though we love it, sometimes it's good to have a break.
You have some good picks here. I hope you find your next 5 star reads in July.
Thank you 😊
In the Garden of Spite sounds really good I’ll have to see if my library has it!
I've been wanting to read it since I bought it but ended up rabbit trailing on other things 🙈
I’ve finished it and it was very close to as good as The Four Winds.
That's awesome!
Empire of the Damned babyyyy, I can't wait for book 3 but I am also super scared lol. And I really need to get into the Blood & Steel series, I enjoyed Scheuerer's Slaying the Shadow Prince! Hope you find many new faves in the 2nd half of the year ❤
I love that you're focusing on reading enjoyment!
It feels about time I do.
Ooof sometimes marketing gets it so wrong! When you said how Five Broken Blades was pitched my interest was piqued too so I don't blame you at all for being excited to check that one out!
🐣
My 12 year old son loves The Otherwoods by Justine Pucella Winans, maybe Dragonfruit would be his vibe too
I'd definitely give it a try.
I had to skip the queue of my watch later to come to this to see your rant about Five Broken Blades - haha! I'll probably still check it out eventually, since I do have a dang copy of it, but only when I'm ready for fantasy romannnceeee so I appreciate that heads up because WOW what a freaking misleading synopsis!!!!
🤣🤣 Yes, I was so mad. Still am. I think I might have at least enjoyed the banter and pining if I knew that's what I was getting into so fingers crossed that the heads up makes it better.
