Road to 200k - Week 18 Wrap-up (Saturday, 30/11/2024) - Momentum reversal or minor pullback?
This video covers the results of the trades that I did over the course of week 18 in this challenge.
Specifically, I explain the main developments that occurred during the week and how I keep track of the trades results over time.
The market was relatively sedated and our holding remain not that far from the prices at the end of last week.
Estée Lauder's recovery somewhat halted and remains to be seen whether it is just a pullback or a reversal of its recovery.
In any case, we will continue to press on with our strategy to lower our holding's cost basis.
We'll regroup at the start of week 19 to see what trades I did for that week.

CAIA & CFA Exams - How to EASILY get ahead of most candidates (Real-life example)

In this video, I describe a situation I experienced as I was going through my CAIA Level II exam preparation, which made me realise how easy it is to outperform the vast majority of the other candidates. This is a clear proof that most candidates lack the discipline to commit to a full-proof preparation schedule. As a result, they eventually find themselves in a precarious situation in which th...

Does the strategy always costs more than the profit you want to secure?
Under normal conditions, yes, because there has always to be a cost to remove all volatility from your outcomes. Otherwise, there would be no downside of locking your profit and so anyone would do it for as soon they reach their profit goals.
Good stuff. Can you make a video explaining your thoughts on the CAIA exam? Keep up the good work.
Thank you for your kind words. I will make one addressing that topic soon. Stay tuned!

@@MarcaoPT thank you very much for your feedback. Much appreciated.
Almost 10k net of unrealized losses. Very very impressive!
@MarcaoPT thank you very much. The wheel strategy is all about small, consistent gains over time. And as you build up your account, your gains tend to increase in size over time. Have a go at it and let me know of your progress. Best of luck!
The CFA is held in very high regard in finance. There are only 190k worldwide. You couldn't even get an entry level role?
@jbdmb I am glad you ask that question. Given my age (late thirties), it makes no sense for employers to give me an entry role, as they know that the salary they would pay me is much lower than the one I could get elsewhere. Therefore, they would never have the slightest assurance that I would stay in that role for long enough to justify picking me. Besides, if they can get someone with Finance experience and pay him a normal salary, they incur in much less risk than picking me. I can't blame them at all. I would do the same thing if I was in their shoes.
@marcoafonsocfa you were dead serious about getting in to investment management / equity research by getting an economics degree, a masters in finance, the cfa, and the caia. And you allowed yourself to price yourself out of the hiring market? When you submit applications you put your salary range in. Were you too stubborn to lower your expected salary so your application would not be automatically disqualified or is this the story you constructed in your own head? As far as your background in risk management: risk management is literally the other side of the coin in finance. You can't do one without the other from the analyst role.all the way up to the cio. So I don't see how your background is risk management would hurt anyone.
@jbdmb I don't see how it would either. The culprit is the lack of experience in finance whilst being already too old and experienced in another field to be qualified for an entry level role. I never state anything related to salary in my applications. At that stage, that is a piece of information that can only make you fall by the wayside.
Hi Marco, thanks for the update. I used to go with option strategy on monthly basics, do you feel that's more profitable to go on weekly date ? Thanks for your advice,
@EPAXavier hello, thank you for your question. Yes, for the wheel strategy I strongly believe that using weekly options yields higher returns than monthly options in the long run. In the short run it really depends on how the market performs. I explain this reasoning in another video on how the wheel strategy is profitable in the long run. The link to the video is here: ua-cam.com/video/QnnUSUT3THc/v-deo.htmlsi=gg2w057CUDHy5Z-A But to put it simply, the time value of an option (measured by the theta, one of the greeks) declines at a much faster rate when the option is very close to maturity than when is further away from maturity. And when you sell options, you want to sell expensive options (with more time value) and if you buy them back, you want to do so cheaply, usually when the time value is close to zero. So, if you sell weekly options, that faster declining rate occurs over a larger proportion of the time you have the position open than when you sell monthly options. So you can profit from the trade in much less time. Hope this helps to answer your question. Stay tuned!
Thanks for the detailed explaination. I like your paint skills 😁
Thank you for your kind words. Let me know if there are further insights about the strategy that you may want to know more of.
Hello Marco, thanks for the information you share with us. How do you select the shares for your wheel strategy?
@dividendchen9377 hello. Thank you for your kind words. It is my intention to make a video to explain why the wheel strategy is successful in the long run. But to answer your question, since the wheel requires you to sell puts and eventually calls as well, the best stocks for the strategy are the less volatile ones (even though the premiums you earn are relatively lower) and good-quality stocks (consistent/increasing earnings & cash flows, competitive businesses with well-established brands) because at some point, you WILL be forced to buy shares and you don't know for how long you will be holding them. With that being said, I am well aware that stocks like HIMS or LYFT are anything but that. Those were part of my attempt to diversify my companies on which I was selling puts. But as you can see, now I am having a hard time getting rid of them without realising a loss. But I am confident that my current strategy (explained many times in the videos) will allow me to sell them whilst avoiding losses. Stay tuned, and feel free to ask further questions. Cheers
Greeting from France, keep going for this challenge !

CAIA IS WORTH IN 2024?, AFTER THERE IS LOT OF CFAs Got Charter and CFAs Value is decreasing as flagship. This course is going to be normal.
Hi Marco, I am from Canada. Is CAIA worth it without doing CFA ?? I do not have any experience in wealth mgmt? I am working in accounting right now ?
Hello, thanks for the comment. The worth of CAIA will always depend on what is your current job and what are your career aspirations. By itself, it never hurts to go for the CAIA as you'll learn a lot. However, you must be aware that Wealth Management is by and large a more exclusive career path and so it is relatively more difficult to enter the industry, especially if you make a mid-career transition. It's your decision but be aware that even with any designation you may not be able to go into Wealth Management. So, if you're willing to go through the program without that expectation and by adopting an approach of "I am going to maximise my learning experience and see where does this knowledge takes me", then go for it and you'll be fine. Hope this helps. For further discussion send me a message on LinkedIn. Cheers
@@marcoafonsocfa Thanks Marco. So, what do you suggest ? doing CIM or CMA USA or CAIA ?? or not do anything and save time and money lol
@@marcoafonsocfa I am going to maximise my learning experience and see where does this knowledge takes me ....wow got you what you mean
From my earliest years until I turned 18, I grappled with self-doubt and academic challenges. Despite my best efforts, subjects like math, English, and physics remained elusive to me throughout my school years. Yet, amidst these struggles, a greater trial awaited: from ages 10 to 17, I underwent the taxing ordeal of dialysis. However, within the depths of adversity, I nurtured a flicker of hope and ambition. At 17, a life-changing kidney transplant marked a turning point in my journey, infusing me with renewed determination and a sense of purpose. But the road to success was far from smooth. In the corridors of academia, I encountered the hurtful words of bullies and the isolating silence of indifference. Yet, I refused to be defined by my setbacks. Instead, I transformed them into stepping stones, each hurdle propelling me closer to my dreams. Today, as I reflect on the trials I've overcome, I am filled with gratitude for the resilience that sustained me. With unwavering support from loved ones, I navigated the darkest of nights, emerging stronger and more determined than ever. My journey, though marked by challenges, is a testament to the power of perseverance and the resilience of the human spirit. And as I set my sights on a career in finance, particularly in pursuing my dream of becoming a CFA, I do so with a heart full of hope and a steadfast belief in the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
I learned to dance by just watching the vid. Not bad 😊
Thank you very much. I will be posting a similar video soon.
Marco, it can be frustrating. Similar situation happened to me however in a different situation. Am thinking of taking longer doing level 1 due to work commitments.

You'll be able to manage your prep schedule and any unforeseen circumstances much more effectively. Cheers!
Hi Marco, your analysis is good about prep providers. Am due to start L1 in Nov, so wanted to get some insight.

Hi Macro I am CFA Charterholder too. I know that CFA charterholder are exempt from Level 1 of CAIA but is there any other criteria to know to get exemption. Please note i just become charteholder 2 weeks ago.
Hello Krishna, Thank you for reaching out. Yes, besides being a CFA Charterholder with a clean record, you need to: - Have a CFA digital badge (such as the one we get from Basno). - Have no CAIA exam history. So, if you have never registered for a CAIA exam before, you should be able to get the exemption. Of course, your request still must be approved by the CAIA Association. Feel free to send me a private message on LinkedIn for further questions. Best of luck!
Hi Marco, I live in Canada. Is CAIA worth it without doing CFA ?? I do not have any experience in wealth mgmt? I am working in accounting right now ?
Thanks for sharing Marco. I am on my 2nd attempt for level 2 and found it incredulously overwhelming in terms of the calculation, terminology and concepts. I found it very challenging having to study, understand and practice. In fact I found it a mad rush for time doing revision and practice prior to the exams. Is there a recommended exam prep provider? I have used schweser and edge designations but it is not aiding in my understanding of the curriculum. Thanks for the guidance!
Hello Eugene, I recorded a video on prep providers that I recommend you to answer your question: ua-cam.com/video/L6s3UUPXx1I/v-deo.html Upon reading your comment, it gives me the impression that you may have begun your prep a bit later than you should. You probably already know my stance on the start date for the preparation, but to answer your query, I only used Edge for the mock exams. With less than 2 weeks' time, you cannot afford to lose more time with the curriculum. Practice as much as you can and use the solution to really understand what you're being asked and only then refer to the curriculum to confirm the concepts of the questions. For further questions, please send me a pm on LinkedIn. Wish you the best of luck for your exam.
@@marcoafonsocfa thanks, have pm on LinkedIn. WRT edge, Russell is a great instructor, however, I found his materials are not updated and has many unrevised learning points. The good part is that it compels me to reference the learning objectives from the textbook and the annoying part is that I wasted lots of time trying to pinpoint the info only to discover that it is an unrevised one. Moreover, edge designation app is poorly maintained, and most recently, the qbank had to be transferred into the link in google classroom.
@@marcoafonsocfa thanks have PM’ed. Russell of Edge is a great instructor. The good part about the this prep provider is that the ans requires one to constantly cross ref with the textbook becos the material is not revised accordingly. In the same breath, the disadvantage here is that it waste too much time trying to find the correct info only to realise that it was from the previous curriculum. I have used edge both for L1 & L2 but found the app and system severely lacking. For example, the qbank was previously on learn2 but for some tech reasons, edge had transferred the qbank into google classroom and have it saved into pdf.
For QBanks and mock exams only, which prep did you use and would you recommend (if you have pros and cons that you know)? I understand for CAIA L2 the most popular ones are UpperMark and Kaplan. Is there any which is a the level of Mark Meldrum for CFA? Thanks a lot for the video!!!
@francescoratto2257 I only bought 3 mock exams from Edge Designations to prepare for the CAIA Level II exam. Disclaimer: I receive no compensation from Edge Designations. I cannot comment on UpperMark nor Kaplan as I did not use them. All I know is feedback from other candidates. Hey congrats I will be giving my level 1 in august Any tips to keep in mind?
I talk about tips for level 1 in another video, but it is key to start studying as early as possible, take 1-2 months to practice as many questions as you can, even if you have to repeat them several times, as this will also allow you to master the use of the calculator and the formulas. Don't slack on your prep. It is the easiest level but it is still a very hard exam to tackle.

@@TheEyeofSauron_1 on what?
UniFi by CAIA is also doing around 15h certification for Fundamentals of Alternative Investments and with the cost of 795$.
Indeed, you're absolutely right. In my view however, I believe that such course is not worth it from a perspective of value for money. Especially for CFA Charterholders as they are able to get the CAIA Charter for roughly 1400USD.
I have a specific question with the hope you can advise. A while ago I got CISI level 4 Diploma in Investment Advice, but now moved into private markets as an IT Product Owner and need to enhance my domain knowledge. Which certification would be better to go for overview? Unify by CAIA or CFA?
@shipka9141 I am not familiar with the CISI curriculum but it seems to me that it leads to the Chartered Wealth Manager Qualification, which can also be a path for you to consider. In any case, if you're looking only to have a superficial but broad level of knowledge about Private Markets, I think that the CAIA would be best but it goes way too deep for what you want. If I would be in your shoes, I would seriously reflect on the reasons why you want to have this broad knowledge and what is your purpose. This is just me, but I personally would not care about committing to a study schedule just to have a broad knowledge of a topic. I want to know it all or I would chase something else. Hope this helps you to make a decision. For more questions, I suggest you connect with me on LinkedIn and we'll talk through there. Cheers
Thanks
Thanks
Can i do CAIA if i m not CFA?
Yes, of course you can. The most usual path is to get the CFA Charter first because then you can get the CAIA Charter by sitting for the Level II exam only. On the other hand, getting the CAIA first does not give you any waiver on the CFA exams, so it is a less conventional path. In the end, it all comes down to what your goal is.
Hey Marco, I think you’ve missed a very important factor in this comparison. In addition to your point, the change could also naturally raise the MPS and so the conclusion that the task of “passing” the exam being easier is not as crystal clear. You have a more convenient set up on one hand but a higher mps, as potentially evident by lower pass rates over recent windows, on another hand. Could also be perspective dependent too, the task could now be harder for a candidate who is very well versed on SR questions and would have had zero issues on previous AM sessions but then the task is easier for a candidate for a candidate who would have struggled with pervious AM. Hello, that's a good point. When I say that the exam has become slightly easier, I mean that now it is easier for each candidate to manage his/her own time and still be able to answer all questions. I am aware that this change may not in the end lead to a better outcome as the MPS may rise as a result, but your perspective is focused on the outcome, which depends on factors you can't control, such as other candidates' performance. My perspective focuses on each candidate's exam experience which, all else equal, may now be better due to the factors I mention in the video. And I believe that may be a reason for the recent MPS increase. As for the essay questions, I assume that, after tackling two exams with MCQ only, candidates are far more used to answer MCQ's than essay questions. To be honest, over many years I have never come across a candidate that is more at ease with essay questions, especially in light of the reasons I mention in the video. Nonetheless, thank you for bringing that up.
@@marcoafonsocfa That’s my bad I thought you were arguing for this point as an outcome rather than solely helping a candidate to perform better. I was indeed more focused on the outcome because the outcome is not as clear: while a candidate would most likely perform better due to being able to complete the exam, the benefit of that may or may not outweigh the cost of a potentially higher mps. I watch your videos regularly, I hope you grow more because your efforts to help are very genuine. All the best brother
@@lastdevil941 yes indeed. Since your result also depends on the other candidates' results, a slightly easier exam may not necessarily help you to pass. Thank you for your kind words and support.
What different between if i do only CFA snd if i do CFA and FRM and CAIA, i love all but what is difference.
You'll get more knowledge doing all three, but the additional value you get in the job market should not be significant.
Congrats my dude 👏 👊
Thank you very much. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hey thanks for the vid helped me lot. Currently strategizing how to table the lvl 2 exam
Glad to have helped you. Feel free to reach out on LinkedIn in case you have any questions. Best of luck!
Hello there, I found this video very informative.. the same doubts creep into my mind.. but I've decided to go through with it for better or for worse.. I'm 23 now so It's Better to take this risk now rather than regret about not doing this 10-12 years down the line
Congratulations on your decision. I fully agree with your line of reasoning and I wish would have done it much sooner than I actually did. The CFA Charter is more beneficial at the early stages of your career as it will set you up on the career path that you want. Best of luck and feel free to drop me a message if you have any further questions.
I do the exam in August.
Make sure you register and begin your preparation as early as you can. You can't go wrong by studying at a comfortable pace and still having enough time to account for any unexpected circumstances. Best of luck!

@@marcoafonsocfa some people's tell me, if you not have experience of accounting and excellent you not be an excellent financial analyst, yet i don't working in any field accounting or finance. So, does CFA level 1 increase the chance without working in any field or not. If i study only CFA without working and when i passed i find a job.
Very detailed explanation , thanks Marco

Dude, this is phenomenal and so genuine. As someone who went for a Tech Change role as a means to try get into the Front Office, then did more certifications than I could count, almost 20 years later, I've had to accept that maybe some things weren't meant to be. I'm now focused on being the best Tech Change resource that I can be. You're definitely spot on about being realistic. The sooner one realises and accepts the facts re their pathway, the sooner they can stop chasing a mirage and start focusing on making the most of their career. It's fine, life goes on!
Thank you for your kind words. Indeed, making a mid-career change which also entails switching employers means that we will be up against all the other candidates with extensive experience in our target field. Therefore, it is extremely unlikely that we can successfully go through the preliminary HR assessment towards a first interview. However, I believe that such transition might be easier within the same entity, as our other skills, experience and internal performance track record might play a role. In any case, it is our job to make the best of every situation, so we can hold our heads up high and take other opportunities when they come around. Wish you the very best!
How much time did you dedicate per week to studying for CAIA level 2?
I registered for the exam on October 3rd, 2022 and scheduled it for March 31st, 2023. I did not count the number of hours but during those 6 months it certainly took me more than 400 to prepare and review everything. I studied every single weekday after working hours and on the weekends it was pretty much an all-day routine. Now, each candidate has his/her own study method and most of them do not need to devote as many hours as I did if all they care about is to pass, especially CFA Charterholders. In the end, it all comes down to the level of mastery you want to achieve on the topics of the curriculum. Hope this helps.
@@marcoafonsocfa Thank you for the response
Having another designation certainly did not seem to have helped my attempts for mid-career changes within the investment industry. I was already feeling that my experience was lacking, and the opportunities were still hard to grab. For the worse, the gap was widening, especially during this sluggish market situation all around the world. But, I decided to try another one just to brush up on my knowledge learned in the CFA program and be able to explain my skills and knowledge in a more professional way. I am sure my life will be miserable until I get a pass. Hopefully, it will help improve the wording on my cv and my interview presentation skills. Thank you for sharing your brave journey, Marco.
Thank you very much for your feedback. It looks like we are on the same boat. However, don't let that discourage you from continuing to work towards your goals. The CAIA Charter is definitely easier for CFA Charterholder due to the overlaps between both curriculums, so I expect you to pass on the first try unless some unexpected event during your prep. Best of luck and keep your eyes on the prize!
I can relate with your experience a lot. Thank you for sharing and I hope you keep posting videos!
Thank you very much for your kind works. I will continue to post more videos for sure, and hopefully the feedback will guide me to make videos on topics that mean the most for everyone.
I liked your honesty in this video 👍
Thank you for your kind words. We all face challenges so the purpose is to support each other along the way.
What about CAIA demand in the future after 5 years.
That is a good question. I may be biased but I quite confident it will increase in the future. Alternative assets are becoming increasingly more important and in demand for their allocation in investment portfolios over time. Not only due to their diversification potential but also because of their potential to hedge against inflation and industry trends, especially with regard to sustainable real assets and infrastructure.
@@marcoafonsocfa do you advise me to do CAIA after the CFA? I am 22 years old now, and may be do the exam CFA level 1 in August.
I'm afraid I can't give you a definite answer, because it really depends on what are your career goals and your personal situation by the time you're considering enrolling in the Program. If you are still a CFA Level I candidate, I wouldn't worry too much about as many things can change until you get the CFA Charter. Once you get, then it makes sense to consider that possibility. For now, I would suggest you to focus on the job at hand, which is preparing for the CFA level I exam. Best of luck!
The career goals is to be a portfolio manager, hudge fund manager, investment banker and the high positions of finance.
@@marcoafonsocfai want to get the three certifications : CFA, FRM, CAIA
Thanks for making this video. It was super helpful!
I appreciate your kind words. Feel free to stay in touch if you need to ask any questions during your exam prep. Best of luck!
once you have the CFA charter, the marginal effect of having other designations such as FRM, PRM, CAIA etc. is negligible and therefore no worth it (source: personal experience)
According to the HR professionals I have queried on that topic, it looks that way at least with regard to job applications.
Absolutely true for employability but not for upskilling :)
@@yashdhikle4825 Indeed.
Just to be clear, this is a separate certificate from CFAI rather than new CFA charter regime with specialised streams including for Alernatives?
@@kashansamad197 the CAIA Charter is under the responsibility of CAIA association not CFA institute
