    I don't understand. That Belt is old and torn up! I can see cracks and chunks missing! That variable pulley is probably 20 years old! Why are you re-using these old beat up parts? What is the purpose of this exercise?

    The bolt that holds the variable speed pulley in place has gotten loose and fell out twice. Is the bolt supposed spin with the pulley or do I need some locktight or something

    • @Justme-xp4rf
      @Justme-xp4rf 3 місяці тому

      Locktigh will help. But you might need to replace the pulley also if it keeps on happening

      @rendor21 Місяць тому

      Yes Sir, The 5/16 x 24 .750 GR5 bolt on the bottom spins with the pulley! The factory bolt has a type of "Red Loctite" on it to keep the bolt from getting loose after installation. If you're using a regular hardware store bolt make sure it's Grade 5 and be sure to use Red Loctite available at any parts store.

    Always press bearings . No hammer

    • @TheOzthewiz
      @TheOzthewiz 2 місяці тому

      As long as you DON'T hammer the center of the bearing, it's okay!

      Any impact damages race . It's a luck thing . Best way is to press bearing in

    • @rendor21
      @rendor21 Місяць тому

      Very true but those bearings are NOT press fit. The Variable pulley just slides through the inner bearing races and the bearings should easily slide into the bearing carrier. Personally I think it should've been press fit but it doesn't spin very fast!

    For anybody doing this, be CAREFUL removing that center bolt from the bearings/variable pulley assembly. That bolt is a 5/16-24, 3/4 inch long, and there IS red locktite on it from the factory. It will shear off inside the pulley in you're not careful. My advice is to apply heat before attempting to remove. p.s. That bolt is like $10.00 online shipped.....or just go to a hardware store and buy it for 75¢

    Ok, guys, n gals, this fix is great. But Po Boys have po ways. When investigating the problem, I saw that the end of the worm gear was rounded off and not square as the new on in the video showed. That told me that the contact with the steering gear had been at the bottom for its lifetime. Along with the bearing flange being worn out, allowing for horizontal movement, it also allowed vertical movement of the entire shaft, which made the contact point at the bottom where the worm gear was worn and slipping. My fix was simple... I raised the front of the mower with a floor jack. I then disconnected the front deck hanger bar. This allowed for more than enough room to get to the screw. Once removed, I searched my spare parts cabinet and found a bolt with the same length and treads and a flat washer with the same size screw hole and an outside diameter a little larger than the hole the Flange bearing sits in. Put the concave washer on the new bolt, then the flat. Inserted into the shaft and walla, the problem was fixed. Cost: about 20 minutes. Bolt and washer, free for me. I expect my fix will probably outlast the mower itself.

      So how did you fix flange bearing. Or did you just tighten the sh××t out of it.

    Do you have any suggestions for my issue,, the part where the bushing fits into has rusted a bit and now the bushing will not snug up,, I dont understand why it was made the way it was to me the bushing should have been secured to the frame, or the bushing nut part should be twice as thick so it does not move so easy,, this is what is causing the gears to wear

    Fix It or Kic It, great video, thank you. I recently changed the drive belt in my Troy bilt pony (2011), unfortunately; the belt now is very tense, not sure if that’s the way it’s supposed to be, I don't know if that will be the cause of my problem, now I can only control the speed with the throttle lever, even when I put it in rabbit mode the motor goes at high rpm, but the ground speed is about half the normal speed; the (yellow on mine) speed control lever doesn’t work, it goes up and down without locking the notches, offers no resistance and does nothing. (however, the engaging of the parking brake action works fine). I opened up the hood and saw the speed control lever attached to a connecting rod which is attached down there to the cupped metal piece in the correct position as the new Troy Bilt Pony I saw yesterday at Home Depot, but besides allowing to be put in in park position, I don’t see it attached to anything else, is it right? How does it regulate the speed if it is not connected to anything else? Thank you in advance.

    Sounds like that engine needs a new camshaft. Decompression mechanism is broke. Very good chance it could take out entire engine. You have broken metal pieces floating around in engine.

      When you're dealing with a 20 year old tractor, take "Easy" out of your vocabulary. For instance I had to use an air hammer and a chisel attachment to cut the head off the bolt on the bottom after it started to turn and stripped. I could have used heat but I might have destroyed the bearings by melting the seals. Never say something like this is "Easy" it's bad Juju!

    Good information to have. With the labor costs approaching $100.00/ hour it doesn't take much to rack up a bill that is more than the tractor is worth.
