Sundial Falls: Ice Climbing in Big Cottonwood Canyon
When the temperatures are reaching 40-50 F degrees in the valley, the only choice is to go higher for good ice!
-
Sundial Falls has been on my list for awhile, and after taking the 2 hours to hike to Lake Blanche and then roughly 30 minutes to get to the climb from there, we were greeted with perfect ice conditions! I choose to climb the lookers left line and then traverse right, which proved to be a fun route!
-
I was glad to get Chris out climbing as he hadn't ice climbed since he moved to Oregon about 3 years ago! An overall great day with fun conversation, hiking, glissading (attempt), and of course climbing!

Huh. Why would so many grizzlies congregate in that one exact snow field? I get that there may be goats there to munch on but that’s less likely as the number of grizzlies there add up - besides, there are goats all around the area (hence you seeing one later). THIRTEEN grizzlies in one area usually means a guaranteed food source, like at river / falls during a salmon run. So, what’s the draw? 🤔

Thank you for the watch and the nice words, Glacier is awesome! Yes I did haha, I was reading A Fine Line by Graham Zimmerman and Extreme Alpinism by Mark Twight and had some imposter syndrome, so changed it about a month again, I still think it fits, I just wouldn’t consider myself an Alpinist after seeing what they did and what guys/girls like Jackson Marvell and Brett Harrington are doing
