Small Bird & Jay Photography in Low Light/High ISO | Nikon Z8 & 180-600mm Lens Performance Test
In this video, I take the Nikon Z8 paired with the 180-600mm lens for a challenging bird photography session! With poor lighting conditions, I had to rely on high ISO settings to capture the action. Join me as I showcase how this setup performs when photographing small birds, including long-tailed tits, great tits, blue tits, coal tits, and the elusive jay.
You'll get a detailed look at sample images, each labeled with the ISO values to give you a clear idea of how this camera and lens handle noise and detail in low-light scenarios. Whether you're considering this gear for wildlife photography or just curious about its capabilities, this video will provide plenty of insights!

    It is a good spot to see what is around, highlights were Hawfinches in November, loads of acorns this year in the Coppice but hardly any haws around. Another great video. Hope to bump into you on the Chase and I will share some of my hotspots. Great quality from the new setup as well.

    Advancing years has stopped me hand holding my Z8 and 180-600 which is slightly lighter than my previous combo (D500 with 200-500) but still heavy. A monopod or tripod with Gimbal head (new K+F concept which, when the weather improves will get a day out) is now essential which is a shame as it spoils the spontaneous shots that often present themselves. Keep them coming

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 15 днів тому

      The main thing Norm is not letting it stop you getting out and doing what you enjoy and have a passion for. And don't worry I miss plenty of spontaneous shots anyway haha 😅 Thanks for watching and being a frequent commenter on the channel!

    Nice video. I have the same setup. I was surprised how heavy the lens was and find it pretty tiring to handhold. Recently picked up the Manfrotto 502ah head, so I'll try out that sometime soon.

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 15 днів тому

      Yes that's the drawback to these bigger lenses, you get closer but the weight can be a huge factor for alot of people especially if you're mostly handheld, I'd advise a shoulder strap mounted to the lens foot as when walking about you can leave camera half dangling with one hand holding the foot, makes it more manageable for me on long sessions walking about, let me know how you get on with the manfrotto though 😀 thanks for watching

    Great images, Lewis. It looks like you had a nice variety of birds at that location. I've yet to get any photos of Kingfishers, and the ones here in the US aren't as colorful as the European variety. I'm of two minds on the 180-600mm lens. I pre-ordered one 3 days after it was announced, and it finally shipped exactly 5 months later. However, had I known the 600mm PF was coming out, which was announced like a week before my 180-600mm was delivered, I'm not sure if I would have ordered the 180-600mm. The 600mm PF is sharper and lighter. Granted, the 600 PF is much more expensive and the 180-600mm gives you a lot of flexibility, but I already had the 100-400 f4.5 so I think that would have been a better combo for me. So, I may sell the 180-600mm. It's hardly been used. But you can't beat the price of it for what you're getting, especially if you don't have other large telephoto lenses, which is why it's such a popular lens and a great successor to the f-mount 200-500mm.. Yeah, the battery life on the Z8 is a bit of an issue, and unfortunately, the battery grip for the Z8 doesn't fit the EN-EL18 battery (nor does it really fit the body all that well). That's what I like about my D810 and D850 - the grip is designed to accept the EN-EL18 battery, plus it retains the EN-EL15 within the camera body so that combo lasts a real long time. With my Z9 the single EN-EL18 will last me an entire weekend of heavy shooting easily. It will be interesting to see how the next generation of the Z8 may improve on the battery life. But I'm strictly a stills shooter, so maybe it's not too bad for that application.

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 27 днів тому

      I see what you mean, as to have the 150-400 4.5 you're kind of covered aren't you so the timing was unlucky for you there, I guess it depends on the budget aswell, can't knock it in terms of value for money for sure though. The Battery scenario is what it is for me I don't do photography full time (only in my dreams) but if I did and I spent day after day having to keep spares charged frequently it would become an annoyance I suppose. Thanks for your thoughts! 😊

  • @Robert-R

    I think you may have mixed up the info @14:04. The image shows the Z8 w/180-600mm and the Z6II w/FTZ + 200-500mm, but the text lists it the other way around. I'm assuming the Z8 w/180-600mm is 460mm in length. The images also clearly indicate that it is shorter than the 200-500mm @500mm w/FTZ.

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 27 днів тому

      Yes you're right I have mixed the bodies up, the lengths tie in with what was said in the video with Z8 and 180-600mm being the smaller compared to fully extended 200-500, thanks for spotting it because I certainly missed it 😅

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 15 днів тому

      Yes a cracking upgrade for you too then, the lens is good value but obviously still costly, I can recommend the 200-500 for mount lens but would need to invest in FTZ Adapter so could probably get a great setup for about 750-850 on the used market which is about more than halfway to the 180-600, the 200-500 is tad sharper in my opinion though, tha is for watching and your comments 😀

    Wow Lewis, some crack in photos of the Bearded Reedlings. When looking at Willow/Marsh Tit, look for the small white mark on the upper mandible. This seems a decent way to ID Marsh Tit in the field, but always a tricky bird unless you get good views.

    Guys, I live very near two Peregrines’ territories on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Please remember that in the breeding season you will require a permit to photograph these birds at a nesting site, (it is otherwise illegal). I absolutely am not suggesting that either Lewis or yourselves do, but over zealous photographers, and climbers, frequently and unwittingly cause the Peregrines disturbance which can and has, caused failed breeding. Take care. Thank you.

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment it is very important as you point out that these are Schedule 1 Species and have as little disturbance as possible, These encounters over the cliff top did not disturb the birds in their successful post breeding season and as you'll see from the images the birds were either leaving cliff ledges due to Crows mobbing or to chase a prey item. I will aim to point this out better in my videos as I learn to create more informative videos. Thanks again

      Hi Andy, I'll have to pop up there then while it's hotting up, not sure of a location best for Rutting up there but I know where I've seen them the rest of the year so worth a look, Thanks for watching 👀 😀

    Its a brilliant spot, was there a few years ago and a Peregine was 'riding the wind' at eye level about 15 feet away, guess what, no camera! The steep grassy slope leading down to Branscombe mouth is a superb spot for grass snakes warming up, great video and shots.

      Oh wow! That's always the way isn't it but a great view none the less! Ahh ill keep that in mind, would love to get some Snake Photography done on Adders or Grass Snakes 🐍 thanks for watching

      I have never seen so many Adders as this year on Cannock Chase (in 40 years), A couple of weeks ago I was walking down to where you filmed the Pied Flycatchers and saw 8 individuals in about 100 metres, once you get your 'eye in' it's amazing how many you spot. There are also plenty of Common Lizards and Slow Works still about.

    Needed to be much earlier on that 3rd day - be there at pre dawn. As to shutter speed, 1/4000 is the minimum that I would use for a Peregrine. With today's AI NR software, you should never be afraid of pushing the ISO upwards.

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 3 місяці тому

      Yeah you're probably right, I had limited time to get out on the cliffs as I was on holiday but next year I'm planning on making more of a dedicated trip for the Peregrines for sure! And yeah I definitely need to push the ISO more, guess I need to trust the kit more, Thanks for watching and the Advice

      @davepastern 3 місяці тому

      @@LewisRound I typically shoot BIFs at a minimum of 1/2000 @ f8. For Peregrines, I'd be going at 1/4000 minimum, since they are such a fast bird. Some pros recommend shooting wide open (give it a try) at 1/4000 (Isaac Grant for example). I prefer to stop down to f8 although for me, that means pushing my ISO up by a stop. I use a R3 which is the current ISO king and it's good up to ISO10000 (I have shot some Australian logrunners at ISO25600 and they came out OK after NR and editing). With a modern camera, especially a MLC, you shouldn't be afraid of pushing the ISO.

    I was sitting in a hide at Cley the other day, trying out a new digiscoping set up when a stunning fresh-faced juvenile Sparrowhawk came and sat on a post right out in the open just meters from the hide... if i had had my Nikon Z 100-400mm (1.4x TC permently attached) with me i would have got crippling images! However i had to settle for just crippling views as my scope was at the other end of the hide!... after about a minute or so i turned to see were my scope was and when i turned back the bird was gone.

      That's a Classic example of Bird Photography isn't it, one day you have all the gear you need for the moment but it never comes, the next time you have nothing with you and you get all the opportunity but are powerless to take advantage Haha 😅

    Looks more like a Greenshank rather than a Wood Sand?!

    • @LewisRound
      @LewisRound 4 місяці тому

      You could very well be right it's just quite a bit smaller than other Greenshank I've seen, the more I look at that Bill it does seem on the longer side though 🤔

    • @solitarysandpiper8491
      @solitarysandpiper8491 4 місяці тому

      @LewisRound flipping waders!... never thought I would mistake a Greenshank for a Wood Sand but until Christian mentioned it I never doubted you. Don't feel too bad though because many moons ago a super-rare Greater Yellowlegs turned up at Daventry, hundreds of birders turned up, many of them experienced twitchers (the finder was a really experienced rarity hunter) but later in the day, after many had ticked it off their list and gone home, a guy noticed a white wedge on the wader's back... it was a Common Greenshank! There were more than a few Rufous-faced bumblers spotted leaving the area after that one.

      @solitarysandpiper8491 that Story makes me feel a whole lot better haha! Waders are a nightmare as they come in some different colour morphs to throw you off 😅
