We are an Anglican Church in the anglo-catholic tradition, with rich liturgical and musical traditions and heritage.
We celebrate mass every day. We offer praise in times of joy, and comfort in times of sorrow. We make music. We worship God in the beauty of holiness, and in the messiness of ordinary life. We reach out to the community to offer help in times of need, and we invite you to come in to learn new ways of seeking God (and old ways, too!).
We offer programs for adults, and for families and children. We collaborate with other churches, synagogues, and community groups to do things that are too big to do by ourselves.
We invite you to be part of any and all of the services and other events happening at the Church of St Mary Magdalene.

I found the music to this in a charity shop years ago. Do you know where/which set it is from?
Lovely performance! Do you know where I can find a copy of the score, please?
And so begins the Holy week marathon. (Toronto)
Superb music & liturgy! We are so blessed to be in this HOLY place, SMM. M Burbidge....
Please give the TEXT of the poem.
I was only thinking this morning (on a day of 37C in Australia!) of the perfection of God's work in a snowflake, and now I've heard this poem for the first time. How could that not be God working? Thank you for bringing it to me, so well recited. What an unusual and beautiful venture you've started. God bless your work.
Thank you so much! I am glad you are enjoying it.
I’m outside watching the bunnies and ducks as night falls on us. Grateful for this peaceful music. ❤
That sounds so lovely.
Greetings from Church of the Redeemer. Thank you for your gorgeous, prayerful a cappella singing. So tranquil! Nice to see the faces of the Gallery Choir. Grace us with more!
Thank you so much, and hello back!
Beautiful! Much thanks.
Thank you!
Lovely reading of this quiet gem ❤
Thank you!
Cool music like song as church when humans older more years ago they die men an women
Bravo! That was very good. I wish you could put it to music in a sort of "Puff the Magic Dragon" type song. I know I'd play it on my schooner in between the rum, cannons and pirate songs.
Thank you!
Absolutely superb! There is no other Church Choir that can rival these exquisite Singers in this city or probably in Canada! They are a well kept secret & deserve to be better known. Their rendition of O ORIENS by Melissa Dunphy was again superb! Finally, the Organist's Postlude, LA NATIVITE du SEIGNEUR by OLIVIER MESSIAEN was riveting. THANKS BE TO GOD....
Absolutely stunning.
Thank you!
Terrific reading--forceful yet gentle. Bravo!
I remember the days when this commemoration was packed, and the choir of a very particular sound, and their were enough servers to carry The Patroness's banner. With a wonderful garden party afterwards. People from far away would attend (at least the party) What The Anglican Church has done to itself has left a lot of pews empty and a lot of talent missing.
Magnificent music, the VICTORIA MASS. The choir was exquisite.GOD BLESS the GALLERY CHOIR & DIRECTOR. The Best liturgical MASS in all of Canada, l'm sure. We are so BLESSED.....M. Burbidge
My mother has an LP of motets and carols by this choir, recorded, I think, in the late 60's. And they still do this carol better than any other choir that I've heard. Just sublime.
Impeccable. Many thanks!
Jo-Ann, you were very much missed in the choir. Feel better soon.
It wonderful to hear the children singing.🎉🎉 Happy feast of Dedication. Wish I could have been there.
The Music & the Choirs are fabulous as usual. Thank you. Sorry to have missed this Mass. So glad to have heard it on tape. M. Burbidge
And here is Stravinsky’s setting of this poem for choir: ua-cam.com/video/Wp2uhUERfOU/v-deo.html (1962); (sung by the Netherlands Chamber Choir)
What a riddle, a conundrum, this poem presents.
Excellent performance
Tremendous, Andrew! Too many renditions of this piece I feel fail to capture its essential character. Yours is spot-on.
Marvellous!!!!
What a shame that this church is dying. Go back to your orthodoxy, no women in any liturgical functions, preach orthodox biblical scripture and doctrine. Restore appropriate liturgical furnishings.
Ugly sanctuary! Willan in rolling in his grave.
Gorgeous Mass, especially the Bruckner motet. Thanks everybody. M. Burbidge
A beautiful poem. I set it to music (in 1990...) -- ua-cam.com/video/IMihY9yQ7mI/v-deo.html :)
Thank you for this. So wonderful to hear them played well on the organ that Willan composed them for. They’re great to play and so useful for service music on varied occasions.
Those five preludes were dedicated to my teacher Dr. Charles Peaker who was the organist and choirmaster of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Bloor Street, Toronto. The organ in that church is Casavant Freres opus 550 (1914) which is the organ for which Willan wrote his very famous Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue. Dr. Peaker only played these preludes once, as stated in the preamble, and then never played them again! Plainsong hymns were never sung at St. Paul's so for Willan to dedicate these preludes to Dr. Peaker was rather a waste of time.
@@erich4431 yes that’s an impressive example of Casavant Freres work. It’s no surprise that the preludes weren’t used at St. Paul’s as the congregation is staunch “north enders”. Casavant is a versatile builder with examples from the French, German, and English schools.
@@Quince828 You have brought back a forgotten memory! All Dr. Peaker's organ students were required to sing in the St. Paul's choir, which was a good thing--Good Friday repertoire--Mozart, Dvorak, Puccini was a never forgotten experience, with a full church and the TSO. I had to think a bit about what you meant by "north enders" but finally my memory jigged in and of course you're correct--that's the way it really was in those days. For history's sake, and your own honour, you better explain what you mean! A lot of people are probably thinking, "What's he talking about; why didn't he just say Low Church!" When these were played I wasn't born until 1953!
I have considered Joffrey for 47 years in this prison, he is a model of correct behavior.
I found this lovely post while looking up other info on St Mary Magdalene’s. My family were members of this parish in the 1950’s before we moved away from Toronto in 1962. I was only a toddler when we left, but there was a strange, but wonderful, familiarity looking at this video. 🙏🏻💜 Blessings from London On.
Just lovely Elizabeth R. From Elizabeth B.🙂
I've been singing this for years and never knew it was a composed "folk carol" by R. Vaughan Williams. Thanks
This is the text Willan set in 'The Three Kings' ! Lovely to hear the poem. Thank you, Andrew.
Beautiful. I sang this in choir in high school in 1957 and with the SF symphony chorus when I was in college. I like this because I can sing along. Thanks.
Thank you! We're so glad you are enjoying it.
How lovely! As a Willan chorister having sung “Hodie” many times, I have never heard it sung better. Dr. Willan would have been proud. Thank you. Colin Hirons
Thank you for the wonderful compliment!
Begins at 35:08
Thank you all for this fine recording of one of my very favourite carols, sung in a manner making me homesick for SMM and for my own very happy 8 years in the Gallery choir. A blessed Advent IV to each of you. Affectionately, Harley.
We are so glad you enjoyed it!
So absolutely bloody depressing to behold
Can't believe the mask horseshit still persists
Absolutely MASTERFULLY done. Perfection. Thank you!
How they so muffled sing!
Why are they all masked still???
Where's the picture of the Madonna & Child on this Marian Mass? Oops. M.Burbidge
Wow! I've heard many excellent organists over the years at SMM, but you make this organ alive, leaping & growling like the beast that it is! We need this injection of love & JOY. May GOD bless you & the magnificent choir in the REVIVAL at SMM! Mary Burbidge
Hi
Wonderful Mass! Unfortunately, couldn't hear or see the sermon. Maybe the miks are in the wrong place? Hope you can fix it. Glorious music & singing! Thanks. Mary Burbidge
That's lovely, Heather! One of my favourites... :)
