The first time I saw Spencer Haywood I was a young 12yr old. It was early 1971, somewhere between February and March. Infact it was the first time I was fortunate to see my FIRST NBA game live, the then Cincinnati Royals came into Seattle to play the Seattle Supersonics on a Friday night. That game will ALWAYS be etched in my mind, Spencer put a SHOW for the fans, there wasn't a dull moment through out the entire game. The game went into overtime, Haywood unfortunately fould out late in the 4th quarter, however the Sonics managed to pull through and win the game. The Cincinnati Royals as I recall had some very good talented players, Sam Lacey, Jonny Green, one of the Van Arsdale brothers, I believe it was Tom Van Arsdale, also they had a young Rookie name Nate "Tiny" Archibald. And I want to give CREDIT where it's really DUE, the original owner of the Sonics Sam Schulman. The man had a EYE for talent, he saw the VALUE in aquiring Spencer Haywood from the ABA and was willing to INVEST the money for the legal court fees, the attorney fees and Haywood's salary etc...It was well worth it for the team, the franchise and for the city of Seattle.....Mr Sam Schulman RIP.
