Metacognition es cognition about cognition, instead of the problem. Cognition is mental task of solving a problem. Example of cognition: "what is cogniton?", "what's are some examples of cognition?". Example of metacognition: "Is asking this questions the best way to comprehend the concept of cognition?", "did I really comprehend cogniton?"

Helpful thanks. I'm teaching first year English major students in a Chinese public university. Our second semester is focused on discussion. I'm tending to be influenced by the IELTS scoring method for giving them a grade, but I feel its hard to show the diversity of abilities in their scores.

This is absolutely brilliant!! Thank you! Questions: When you are monitoring / observing and they have questions - as educators what are appropriate responses? For example, do you respond with a question back that will lead to the answer? Do you give them resources to formulate their own answers? Do you verbally tell them what to think & how? Do you model your thinking process and leave them to establish their own processes from examples you have already modeled before? (Essentially reinforcing techniques again?)

@@melannypastrana5631 Hi Melanny, I would say not to worry too much but stay proactive. As a teacher who uses Lexiles in my class, I always emphasize to my students that we can only change what we have control of. So what can you do to improve? #1: Read a lot. In my class, students who find a series they like tend to do amazing things. Part of this is that most good series are hard to put down. More reading = more improvement. Read before bed. Read before turning the TV on. Bring a book on a long road trip. Read whenever you have a few minutes. #2: Write down new words. If you see a new word more than once, write it down. When you are done reading look it up. When I've had students in the past who were stuck at a certain level, this almost always made a big difference. Put another way, the lexile test is a big vocab test. #3: Be proactive. Talk with people (friends, family, teachers) about the books you read. This will help you "own" the language in the books you read. Best of luck. If you need some reading suggestions, just ask. What kinds of books did you enjoy in the past?
