Pretty common for them, the steam shops are located at the opposite end of the line from the passenger trains' origin. Also near a few of their busy customers, so cars almost always have to move to/from.

In Europe, there are still a few WW2 German locomotives in use, as coal is much cheaper than diesel. Check it out.

Their trips to Martinsburg are a great ride! The really bumpy part is the Claysburg Branch, which doesn't see passenger service too often. The first passenger train in 50+ years ran last year (a video which is coming soon!)

The Big Boy isn't around right now to haul freight, except in very limited circumstances, such as when it helped push a stalled freight train uphill in Nebraska. It's a goodwill ambassador, meant to appear in as many places on the UP system as possible and to remind people of our history, when great steam locomotives ruled the rails; we need to remember our history. "Publicity stunt"?? I think "stunt" is the wrong word, here. The 4014 is a long-term project that took years and millions of dollars to resuscitate and is destined to be around for decades; a little more than a "stunt", I'd say. That said, using Everett Railroad #11 to haul freight, publicity stunt or not, is a good thing and worthy of attention and acclaim.

@@ericemmons3040 hahaha you think because 4014 is going to be around for years it isn't a PR stunt. UP spent millions restoring it purely because of the subsequent free publicity it would gain them over decades to come. Just look at the recent Jay Leno video on 4014 and the number of views that single video has had. That's the kind of PR that can't be bought. Primarily because it's PR that doesn't come with the negative stigma of intrusive ads popping up mid program on TV or online. Look at the videos of 4014 all over the internet and the thousands who have turned out to see it. That is the PR 4014 buys UP. That's why they did this. You seem to be ignorant of how these large corporations operate. They didn't restore 4014 because they are nice guys. They restored 4014 to make a buck. All that positive PR 4014 brings them in ways money can't buy feeds back into the UP cashbook by customers having seen 4014 thinking of trying UP for their freight needs. A consideration those potential new customers wouldn't have given UP if it wasn't for seeing 4014. An encounter that put UP in the back of their minds. This is what is known as the Halo Effect. The cognitive bias of the positive feelings these people experience seeing 4014 translates into them seeing UP as a whole with the same positive feelings. You should learn some basic marketing. And perhaps a bit of basic psychology as well.

@@nicholmansgarage3501 I live in Chambersburg, which id just a hop skip and a jump east on US 30... And yet I've never been to the Everett Railroad. Orbisonia, yes, but not this one. That's going to have to change... and soon.

@ELOfanatic I've been there 5 times so far and I love it. It's really something to walk up the the platform and see a uniform train - all cars the same color and lettered the same, which is how most excursions are. And every car is beautifully restored. I'd have to say it's one of my favorite excursion railroads I've ridden. I live near Kittanning, so it's not too far for me either.

TVRM does it occasionally. But freight usually comes in when the engines are cooled down in between operating days.

These are my absolute favorite kind of steam videos. Seeing steam locomotives hauling modern freight for a look at what could have been had they not been replaced. I could watch all day .
