İstiklal march (in english the march of liberation) was actually a poem with 40 lines. The assembly shortened it to 8 lines, so it wouldn't be a 10 minutes long chorus . It was meant to encourage revolutionaries who fought against both the allied nations and the very ottoman government who betrayed their own people by signing the treaty of sevres, which made many turkish people subjects to western powers. In those hopeless days, this poem started with "fear not!" And ended with "Independence is our nations right!". It isn't an egotistically proud march nor a childishly joyful one. It is meant to encourage, it is meant to motivate people in their darkest hours. Which makes it suit even better to events like earthquake where hope mostly dies. Thanks for your kind words. Thanks for spotlighting us a bit, perhaps coincidentally close to our day of founding (June 6th). We're actually the country with the most islands of any nation in the world. This is, in part, due to how our definitions for what constitutes an island differs from other countries, but certainly not exclusively because of that. We're also the 5th largest country in Europe and the largest in Scandinavia (and 4th least populated by population density). Denmark with Greenland would have been larger but it is not usually counted since it's an administrative region or something rather than part of Denmark proper. If you wish to hear a more unique version of our national anthem I would suggest looking into Jonna Jinton (Search for Jonna Jinton - Du gamla, du fria). She made a stunning music video singing it in a melancholy way in the skyle of Kulning. Kulning is an old way of singing that was used by some Swedish farmers of old to call the cows home from their grazing by applying certain techniques for projecting your voice so the sound echoed over long distances. It was written in the national-romantic period in the 19th century after the Napoleon wars where we lost Norway to Sweden and the english bombed Copenhagen. In that period there was a lot of fokus on the Danish history and nature. Fun fact: an unofficial national anthem in Denmark is "I Danmark er jeg født" ("I was born in Denmark, that is where I belong") which was written by... you guessed it: Hans Christian Andersen - or just H. C. Andersen as we say in Denmark.

We have 2 "God defend NZ" "God save the Queen" when I was a kid we sung both at school.
