A Condensed History of the Mitchell Library
We went on a night time tour of the Mitchell Library and I had filmed as much of it as possible, while my phone was set on denying me that luxury. We did it, however, with a LOT of help from the National Library of Scotland and their archives.
I hope you enjoy this short wee history of the Mitchell Library. If you like a good map, I hope not to disappoint, having chosen from a variety of very different options.

Antique Spinning Wheel Unboxing
Переглядів 4219 годин тому
I took the notion to obtain an antique spinning wheel. I was lucky enough to be the only bidder for this one making it far cheaper than it should have gone for. My intention is to attempt to make wool from a bag of shorn Elphie fur. We'll see how it goes. Just awaiting a couple of bits for it and time to give it a good clean and polish.
Pt. 2 Caerlaverock Castle & Sweetheart Abbey

This jaunt was taken on the Friday before Hallowe'en. We actually got in about Lochmaben, Torthorwald, & Caerlaverock castles, along with Sweetheart Abbey, but the full day out made for a 2 hour long video, so, you'll be getting this day out as a 2-parter. Its edit and upload were delayed due to the Slains & Glamis castles trip (ua-cam.com/video/Vn1KTu9aOM0/v-deo.htmlsi=lVlp1QYUppxrHIE-), done ...

These were great & I can definitely recommend tae anyone finding themselves at a beauty spot in the country accompanied by a tourist centre or shop, since that seems to be where I come across these bottles most often. I am perhaps mispronouncing the Cairn o' Mohr branding but I'm enjoying that they're name is effectively "care no more" 😆 Kitten shenanigans after Patron thanks, too ☺️

Welcome to our last episode of newspaper randomness for this series. We had 3 articles out the hat for this one and no trigger warnings to note. Galician women appeal to the Austrian Emperor for the right to fight for their country, even willing to do so without pay. (Dundee Courier, 29th December, 1864.) Note of the marriage of a woman who, disguised as a man, succeeded in becoming the Captain...

Slains & Glamis Castles

Being Hallowe'en it seemed a good idea to head up to Scotland's "Dracula Castle," Slains Castle, Cruden Bay. Bram Stoker had seemingly used it for his portrayal of Dracula's abode, while there writing the novel, in 1895. The remaining structure is immense and fantastic to get a wander around. So sad it was just left to ruin after being stripped of everything it was worth. It would have made, an...
Big Moment for RSH
Переглядів 5521 день тому
I moved from a corner of the living room into our spare room on a friend, who had been staying with us for a few years, leaving. That was about 2 years ago. Slowly - so very slowly - I've been transforming it for RSH purposes. Starting with the window and making wee changes towards the door, the walls went from green to purple, in small incremental bits, as I was able to free up space & get in ...

Welcome to another episode of newspaper randomness. We had 4 articles out the hat for this one. Trigger warning for death by poisoning. We begin with a report of a poisoning after a group of 4 friends all drank from a glass which had contained Naphtha. (Glasgow Evening Citizen, 11th May, 1880.) Next up is details of an incident in which a keeper of the Humane Society House jumped into the River...
Map of Scotland (1610)
Переглядів 164Місяць тому
Thought I'd delve into the RSH collection to see what could be added to the online archive and felt it was a good time to set in about this framed map of Scotland, created by John Speed in 1610. Any framed piece is impossible to scan on a flatbed scanner as the frame lifts the image away from the scanner glass, leading to blurry, low-resolution failures. The only option, if set on obtaining a s...

Welcome to another episode of newspaper randomness. We had 3 articles out the hat in this episode. Trigger Warning for the first, being the accidental death of a child. To begin us we have a child who fell while holding a stick, which went up his nose. (Lincolnshire Free Press, 13th July, 1897.) Then we had a Cockney superstition which supposedly leads folk to the thieves of their belongings. (...

Welcome to another episode of newspaper randomness. We had 4 articles out the hat in this episode. Trigger warnings for accidental death by truss (1st article) & shotgun(?) blast to the pelvis (4th article). To begin we hear about a stage extra in the theatre having died in an act of slapstick. (Magnet (London), 27th January, 1845.) Then it's a relation of farm-servant, Tommy, having been disco...

Welcome to another episode of newspaper randomness. We had 4 articles out the hat in this episode. To start us off we have a female sailor who was found out. (Dundee, Perth, & Cupar Advertiser, 30th August, 1859.) Next we have 3 calves born in a way that seemed to frighten some of the more credulous locals. (Perthshire Courier, 7th May, 1835.) Superb lassie, thankyou😘
I have ordered the cherry wine and Gangs with Haggis. Expensive delivery costs but going to try them as a Christmas treat xx
Bernadette Banner has a video where she attempts to spin on an antique wheel. Please take care.
The wheel looks pretty good. I look forward to seeing how the wool turns out xx

Thanks for all the time you invest in finding the most interesting articles out of I don't know how many you read to get these - and for then doing these videos. I hope you will recover speedily and fully and feel well again. All the best!
A watched pot never boils, but it could be lethal.
Hi RSH jenny i just managed to catch the last five minutes of live premier Just seen you had surgery wish you a speedy recovery hope things are going will Lots of love 💗💗

In university, some of us had to read Saint Thomas Aquinas' argument from design, or teleological argument. It is a proof for the existence of God that states that the order in the world is evidence of a designer. Random Scottish History simply does this video to demonstrate same point. 😊
I hardly recognize it 💙
Some of the flowers you brought, that dried nicely, you may have seen hanging down fae ma main bookcase next to my Roslin Chapel rose ☺️
Looking great!
Thank you 🙏😘
Fantastic an wel dun you. Figuring oot how it wis put thegither an doin the revers. An a tok ta masel aw the time as weel. The spelin is how it wis din an how it stil shood be---in ma opinyin
I can't believe the patience and dexterity displayed in getting an excellent image from an old map. Good choice of subject.😊
Thank you again 💜
Good morning Jenny.
Good morning 👋
Very good video, as always. 😊
Thank you for devoting a wee bit of your time tae the channel 💜
Wow ! That first one sadly brural . That poor wee boy
You're not wrong. That's why I make the Trigger Warning notice at the start 👌 I just hope folk heed them 🤞
Evening Jenny 🏴 popping in to say hi and tune in for a while
If it was town gas used in that time @random Scottish history it was that smell sulfer smell natural gas as you said has smell added to it it sounds like another type of gas cause that Jenny but I could be wrong Ps just looked it up Jenny it's carbon monoxide gas that turned gas light green in colour it may also change the sky light that purple but again it stated not harmful as it's not contained space eg room bottom of ship hold
Jen, is the chat off or am I doing something wrong?
I'm so sorry, I didn't even get a notification of your comment. Live chat was available & I was wondering where ye were. I know it's a bit if a pain in the butt navigating on the phone to live chat. On a computer I was under the assumption it automatically appeared to the right of the video, if the video isn't full screened. I'm afraid that's the extent of my knowledge 😕
Was a little comic relief in that first one: German word for "death" misspelled, isn't actually "Fod" (but not "Fud" either 🙃), it's "Tod". But aye, it's gramatically masculine ("der Tod").
👍 🖐
I f'ed up. Tried reinstall discord. Doesn't work. Lost access 😱
You should still be able to access your Discord via url in a browser, tho I'm not sure why it won't let you redownload it 🤷🏻♀️
@@RandomScottishHistory ty. But going crazy here, now I can't send pics by WhatsApp......things gone to 💩 and I'm too dumb🤕

Im Uddingston, born and bred. We played in "The Wids" on both sides of the Clyde. I recommend parking at the Bothwell end of the David Livingston footbridge and walking along the Clyde to Bothwell Castle.
Very good video. Scotland's rain is no deterrent to the channel.😊
I was going to make a comment about sleepwalking not being a "thing" these days. Then I saw Evelyn's experience in the chat replay. That must have been terrifying.
Scotland so nice, could only be better if independent 🏴🤘
You're not wrong - also, always welcome tae visit 😉
Excellent video as always. 😊
Thank you, Colin! 💜
Well that was very interesting, but it’s nade feel very old indeed! I can remember when books like the little Scott’s Marmion were fairly common! Eeeek!!

You're smart to have him on harness. Those little critters can move faster than we can.
Yup, experience has shown he has a tendency to run through gaps in fences to places from which we cannot extract him without bribery tactics 😆 Unfortunately, as you can see in this video, a few of those places house doggies... 🙄
Quality podcast 🏴
Cheers, love 💜
That's way better be able to hear the random papers now
All Beanies have birthdays! 😊
I had no idea 😆 So cute! ☺️
@@RandomScottishHistory When you said its birthday a bell went off in my memory, Lol. Kids used to be really into collecting them here in the States. They've been around for a long time now. 😂
I had a couple of beanie babies a few decades ago but I'm not sure I ever knew they had names & birthdays 🤷🏻♀️😆

There's definitely still that same noise, it's just more subtle, but I'm willing to go with it for now x

Enjoyed the video!!
- "elderly" mother of a 17-year old! Given life expectancy in 1853, I suppose that's not a stretch. - "slept together before" - Mrs. Panton must've in fact kept her pant on during those "little visits"
