Chasing Gremlins in a 50 Year Old Motorcycle
Переглядів 164День тому
No matter what i do, these little gremlins are always causing me trouble! This bike has been a series of small problems throughout the years I've owned it. What should I expect though, it's 50 years old!? These old Hondas are just fantastic bikes though and if you're considering getting into vintage motorcycles, there really is no better platform. They're cheap, easy to work on, and extremely r...
Mini Bike Customization! Sissy Bar and New Paint Job!
Переглядів 15514 днів тому
In the last video i posted of my mini bike, the 1969 Thomas Explorer(!), I repainted it. I tried a technique I had never tried before and to be honest, it didn't turn out how i wanted it to, so I'm gonna try something new! Also. in the process of helping a friend, I acquired a rad oldschool sissy bar that fits this bike perfectly! In the goal of being as silly and fun as possible, this bike is ...

The XR80R is acting up again and I'm having a hard time figuring it out. After the timing chain skipped the sprocket, I replaced the chain and sprockets. It also bent a valve so i had to replace those too. There's a video about it here somewhere lol. After riding it for a few weeks, the engine abruptly soft seized. Draining the oil, I found it was full of metal, and I'm not sure where it's comi...

I decided this old mini bike could use a new look. The overall look of the bike just didn't fit it's personality, so I had to go to work. A quick rattle can restoration later and I think it looks so much better! PLUS! Should I swap the predator out for a vintage 2 stroke cart motor I have on the shelf? You tell me, should I try to get the old motor running? Also, quick note: I refer to this bik...

I got this bike as payment for doing some work on an old cafe racer. It's been painted and has a white bros slip on, but is otherwise stock. It was well maintained but has been sitting in a barn for almost a decade. Can i battle the mice and neglect to bring this awesome bike back to life?

How to find parts for vintage Japanese motorcycles
I still have a few of these from '72 - '76. I looked at them just the other day. Back then I had 3 or 4 subscriptions for years. Some of my older ones I still have, still have that subscription card in the middle you send in for a 1 year and 12 issues, $3.95. About 10 years ago I threw away several stacks of motorcycle dirt bike magazines. I kept some that I liked. My favorite is the one on Kenny Roberts TZ750 Miler bike test. Shoe horn a Yamaha 750 GP road race 4 cylinder 2 stroke engine, into a flat track bike frame. His favorite saying, ''They dont pay me enough to ride that thing.'' It had so much power it was hard to control, thats saying something coming from him. One race he went to the back of the pack not being able to control it, only to go back up through the pack and win the race. He said it was his finest achievement, beating the Harley Davidson factory backed flat track riders who dominated back then. Then several other guys had one. Eventually it was banned. I loved riding during these years.
@@rchydrozz751 my dad collected all the ones I have, they range from 67-the early 2000’s, most of them from the seventies. My mom bugged him to get rid of them for years, when he finally broke down and said he’d let them go I said I’ll take them! It about made his day lol I think I have that issue with the Kenny Robert’s test, if not I remember reading it several times. That bike was a beast!
I was one of the those enduro / motocross days in the 70's. I gave up on motocross after ricocheting off a tree and nearly falling into a river. I preferred cross country over everything else. Tried some Trials too. Back in the day when we used forests and real rocks and streams.
Yeah, even in those days trials riding was gnarly! I always wanted to try but knew I didn’t have the balance for it
@@Buck1954 my 75 Honda trials bike was actually a fantastic trail bike.
@@tedecker3792 was it a TL? Those were such cool bikes! They seem like they’d actually be usable as a trail bike too, unlike most of the trials bikes they’ve built since, they all such tiny gas tanks
@ TL250
Thankfully hardly anyone carried cameras when I raced in the 60s and 70s.
Haha I feel the same way about most of my childhood, I’m so happy there’s no evidence!
Man you just made me feel old.
@@lw3918 damn, sorry bout that man
@VintageMotionWorks Lol, it's ok. I am after all. What really makes me feel old is not riding. Bike has been in the garage for 4 years now.
@@lw3918I know that feeling. I haven’t been on a legit track in years. Happens quick I guess
@VintageMotionWorks I ditched tracks in my early 30's. Raced desert after. Quit racing in my late 40's. And just rode/explored in Mojave. Then Biden was put in place and I couldn't afford the gas to get out there. Everything on a dirt bike seems to be $100. Plus $100 to fill up the truck. Oh, and I hate the last bike I brought. Frickin KTM'S. Should have stayed on a Honda.
@ I bet desert racing was fun!
Id say your only real risk is the bearing becoming tight enough to start spinning in the housing and eating it
@@kenbennet8237 after getting it apart again I worked on the bearings and they freed up more. They’re not perfect but I think they’ll be ok for the short term. I need to replace them though. I want to do the top end too.
Painful video to watch
if your in california I can help. I just finished restoring an xr80 for a customer and I have another on the bench.
@@RyanMenke-uo5ee thank you, I appreciate that! I’m in Michigan though. I think I’ve got it figured out, I put the motor back together yesterday, just gotta get it back in the bike now
No Assembly lube required. Must have been a little bit different back in the day when they built engines
Your piston should slide up-and-down pretty much by itself. The resistance your feeling is because you have bad bearings. I promise
" doesn't feel great." Is this your first time around? The bearings shouldn't have any resistance whatsoever. That bearing is absolutely bad
You have something floating around your case or I would look at the end of all my bolts because the end of the bolt would be shiny if it was too long and grinding on the Crank
So dramatic
You act like a rebuild is this is the end of the world. I assure you it's simple
Dont give up, the feeling when it's done qnd the bike runs is so worth it. Keep it up.
Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement!
Oh Oh
hahaha
I also have a 2001VFR. Had 15,000 on it when I bought it 5 years ago. I now have 72,000. I do all my own maintenance . Have changed bearings including steering stem to tapered. Put on ABM straight bar, very comfortable. 520 conversion chain 2 up rear sprocket more torque . This bike is a joy to cruise. I go out for a couple hours and can cruise very fast easily. The more you ride it will grow on you. I'm 66 don't need to change. Good luck.
This bike has an enricher when starting instead of choke, no need to twist throttle when starting. Let it warm up before getting on it. Could be wax idle.
@@joelbrittenour8197 that’s awesome! These are such cool bikes, I can’t wait to get it running. I ride my cb550 cafe racer mostly lately and it’s miserably uncomfortable. 50-100 miles and my wrists and back are over it! It’ll be nice to have another comfortable bike I can put some miles on.
@@joelbrittenour8197 yeah, I’ve heard it’s important to let them warm up
That's a loose muffler lol
@@RandomPerson-ob1hk haha right?

When you say "machine shop bore and hone" are you referring to DrATV's work?
@@marchanselman no. Unfortunately at the time dratv wasn’t doing cylinders so I had to take it to a local machine shop. I know dratv has in the past but for some reason when I needed it done they had stopped for some reason. Are they doing that work again?

You don’t build hondas, they build themselves
They unbuild themselves sometimes too! Haha
Been there brother , when bikes cost more than truck they in lmaooooo 🤣😂great video and cool stories reminds me of the simpler times 🇺🇲
Thank you friend! Who would spend more on their truck than their bike anyway?🤣
Gotta love xrs, had a 80 as a kid n a few others loved them all , great video
It’s been a great little bike, it constantly surprises me with how good it is at what it does!
I just solved whatever you think your problem is. You put the wrong fender and sticker kit on that Honda. There, problem solved.
The plastics and number plate stickers are stock. The thumbnail is ai, so it’s a little off, but the actual bike is as it rolled out of the factory in 1986!
@DOBERKEET Really? Because I remember those on show room in 86 and that fender didn't exist yet.
Yeah, the bodywork is all stock as far as I know. I’m the second owner and I’ve had it since it was around a year old. It was barely used, I doubt the fender had been replaced. Anything’s possible though
Nice bike! I have a 77’ XR75 I’ve done a complete rebuild plus worked over the head for some performance changed the jetting and gears. These bikes run better with the filter off when on street or not so dusty trails. Mine runs nearly out with my 76 Elsinore 250.
Good job. Sounds great. My 1st bike was a 1978 XR75. A little tank. Loved that thing. Got 3rd place in 80 beginner class against 2 stroke 80's at Dade City Raceway in Dade City Florida. The next Saturday we were back and to my surprise Dad had arranged a trade for me. When we got to the track he said bring your bike down here I want to show you something in the pits. 2 brothers named Tom and Dave had a Chariot trailer they sold accessories out of, T & D Motocross Accessories. I think they had a shop somewhere. Dad said check out that 1981 CR 80. Take it for a ride in the pits. When I came back he said leave your 75 here. That's your new to me but used race bike. And my life was changed forever. Ahhhhh the memories. Thanks for sharing brother. Oh yeah I was 11 at the time. But when I got off that CR 80 I said to myself. This must be what it feels like to be a man. 💪
Nice! Awesome story man, thanks for sharing! 15 years ago or so my dad and I started racing mini supermoto. He had a cr80 that was an awesome bike! I had an rm80 and a cr60. The 60 was such a cool Little ripper!
Good bikes had the 77 model
Good story about life.
Thank you!
How's it going with the '57 Seahorse 35? I just had this pop up in my feed and am curious to see how it turns out. I have the same motor and am starting to go through it. Hasn't been in the water since 1976 or '77.

Thank you! I love big bore 2s bikes, I have a Husqvarna 430. I’ll do some digging. Cool bike!
Nothing about the later cr500’s unfortunately. Most of the magazines are from the 70’s, some from the late sixties, some from the early eighties, a couple from the nineties, and a few from the early 2000’s. I’ll look for some earlier cr500 articles though.
@@VintageMotionWorks ok thanks, appreciate it brother

FOR ALL YOU GOOBERS: 1. THE TRUCK IS BADASS, I AGREE. IT RUNS LIKE SHIT, THE KID THAT OWNS IT MAKES IT WORSE EVERYTIME HE PUTS A WRENCH TO IT, AND IT WILL ONLY REALLY RUN AT FULL THROTTLE. 2. YES, ITS A 25MPH STREET IN A SMALL TOWN. KIDS LIVE ON THE STREET. 3. THIS HAPPEN AS KIDS WERE WALKING HOME FROM SCHOOL. ON HIS FIRST PASS A KID HAD TO RUN INTO MY YARD TO AVOID GETTING HIT. THIS WAS HIS 3RD PASS AT FULL THROTTLE. SO, YES, ITS ANNOYING AND HES ENDANGERING OTHER PEOPLE. IM OBVIOUSLY A MOTORSPORTS GUY. I HAVE DIRTBIKES, IVE OWNNED JEEPS AND A COUPLE LIFTED SQUARE BODY GMCS. IM NOT A DICK THOUGH. AND MY NEIGHBOR WHO WAS BITCHING ABOUT THE SMOKE WAS RIGHT, ITS NASTY TO BREATHE IN. I WOULD NEVER HARM A MANS VEHICLE. HE LOVES THAT TRUCK AND I WOULD BE FURIOUS IF SOMEONE DID SOMETHING TO ONE OF MY BIKES. THE KID WAS DRIVING A COOL TRUCK BUT HE WAS BEING A JACKASS. AND THOSE TIRES ARE USELESS. NOW STOP FIGHTING CHILDREN!
The smoke is the issue? WTF he's doing what 50mph down a residential street & he's a fellow resident? Go knock on his door and tell him how much of a jerkoff he is.
That actually is very nice I'll admit to slight jealousy
A lot of defueling going on. Think you got issues?
