Explained In Under a Minute: What is the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)?
Slide 2:
Enacted in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, is a landmark civil rights law ensuring equal rights for individuals with disabilities. It prohibits discrimination and ensures access to employment, public services, businesses, and telecommunications. The ADA promotes inclusion, breaking down barriers for millions of Americans.
Slide 3:
The ADA has five main titles:
Title I: Ensures fair treatment in employment for qualified individuals and requires reasonable accommodations.
Title II: Guarantees access to public services, like government programs and transportation.
Title III: Requires businesses to provide accessibility and remove barriers when feasible.
Title IV: Mandates accessible telecommunications for individuals with hearing or speech disabilities.
Title V: Protects against retaliation for asserting ADA rights.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a comprehensive civil rights law enacted in 1990 in the United States to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities. Its purpose is to prohibit discrimination and ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to opportunities, services, and accommodations.
The ADA applies to various aspects of life and is divided into five titles:
Title I: Employment
Prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in employment. Employers with 15 or more employees must provide reasonable accommodations to qualified employees with disabilities unless it would cause undue hardship.
Title II: Public Services
Ensures that state and local governments, as well as public transportation, provide equal access to programs, services, and activities for individuals with disabilities.
Title III: Public Accommodations
Requires businesses and nonprofit organizations that serve the public to make their facilities accessible. This includes restaurants, hotels, theaters, stores, and more. It also includes ensuring effective communication and removing barriers when readily achievable.
Title IV: Telecommunications
Requires telecommunications companies to provide relay services for individuals with hearing or speech disabilities, enabling effective communication via telephone and other mediums.
Title V: Miscellaneous Provisions
Includes various provisions related to the ADA, such as protections against retaliation or coercion for individuals asserting their rights under the Act.
The ADA has been amended over the years, most notably through the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), which broadened the definition of "disability" to ensure more inclusive protection.
The ADA promotes equality and inclusion by mandating that physical, communication, and policy barriers are removed to allow full participation by individuals with disabilities.
