A roundabout! Getting even more like The UK, except there's not much traffic and and there doesn't seem to be any potholes 😊
Mick, to paraphrase Peter @Lanes-Explorer5733, it's the traffic wot makes the potholes. 😂 Thanks for watching, and thanks for your terrific videos capturing your epic rides across Wales, England, and Scotland.
where's the tunes
Not all have tunes. Sometimes I'm just too tired to engage in the copyright extortion struggles...
Love the purrrr of the motor at the beginning, is that the Triumph that you are riding?
Yes indeed it is. You, by the way, have the coolest avatar ever!
Oh yes Tim we're definitely in Lanes-Explorer territory here... Drystone walling, narrow leafy lanes strewn with mud, gravel and who knows what else. Even noticed grass growing down the middle in places. And potholes. And a pie. Perfect 👍
Perfect! I'm very glad you enjoyed it, Peter!
Peter, this pie run was a recon mission to double check the route, and to confirm that my new tail bag would indeed safely carry a pie 🥧. I was prepping for a ride with my friend Pat, a pie run that would occur a week or two later and in sunnier conditions. For the later run with Pat, I did not ride the same exact route, skirting this dirt/mud section - but because it is so darn beautiful, I do end up riding and filming this section again on another later drier ride out. These back back lanes are often the best rides. But I don't need to tell you that, master of Lanes Exploring🙂.
@FelliniMotorcycle Always interesting to have a bit of background information on rides I think. You did well with the Triumph on that potentially hazardous lane 👍
Pennsylvania certainly looks like an interesting state - probably much larger than the whole of the British Isles so I imagine just as varied. Always enjoy these 👍
I don't know the exact comparative sizes, Peter, but the British Isles are larger than Pennsylvania, and (given the north south spread, and wonderful ocean borders) Great Britain it's certainly more varied wrt landscape. That said, Pennsylvania is pretty spectacular. I'm glad that you enjoy these rides. I really like your videos of Northwest England. Thanks, Peter.
@FelliniMotorcycle Bless you Tim. Yes we do have incredible variety here despite our size. Perhaps I'm thinking of Texas 🙈 It's always good to watch when you follow Pat on his BMW - presumably he decides the routes as he's the local lad 😊
Pat is indeed great to follow. Native to Pennsylvania, and something of an explorer, he is a terrific guide. And a good friend.
Hello Tim. Well this one's a bit different. I noticed someone jogging and another strolling along the sidewalk - pavement we call it. So much space and sunshine with huge houses. 😯
Yes, Peter. A bit different. A quick clip through the neighborhood. We live in one of the smallest houses (townhouse). Our goal years ago when we moved to this area was to live in as nice a neighborhood as we could afford, so we live in the smallest house in this pretty nice neighborhood.
@FelliniMotorcycle Lovely to see where you live Tim
That's one beautiful neighborhood Love the houses and big park area. Super clean area.
Yes, it's very nice. Nearly perfect for us. Thanks.
Your Guzzi sounds very similar to a BMW R1150RT I had about 20 years ago, the same 'agricultural' gearbox and whining shaft drive. I wasn't recording back then but if I was I think it would've sounded the same wherever I put the mic 😄 The scenery was very familiar too, as Peter said we could have been in England.
Mick, I do love that Guzzi, I love everything about it. And yes, western Maryland is beautiful, maybe a little like England as you say. Thanks. 👍
Bro you could've added atleast an intro audio.
I'm not a big talker on these videos. Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.
Hurrah it's stopped raining Tim. Now we can really relax and enjoy the ride. 👍
We're riding west onto the plains and plains and plains. 😁🌞🌞
@FelliniMotorcycle So we're deep into Zen and the Art country now perhaps? I shall refrain from asking *Are we there yet? "😂
Pirsig took a more scenic route, riding from Minnesota to Montana to California. Well, "differently" scenic. Our route offers no such distractions. Just us and the grandeur of the windswept breadbasket. 🌞
Marvellous Tim, thanks for taking us along. Love the wide expanses of road and landscape. 👌👍
Thanks, Dave. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Tim, not sure why but that's put me in the mood to watch The Cleveland Orchestra playing Buckner No 8 at The Severance Hall. I haven't done that in a while because it tends to set my tinnitus off but I'll risk it. Cheers, Mick
I'll admit Mick, that I'm at sea. Time for me to listen to the Bruckner 8. I don't know it off the top of my head. If it gives me tinnitus, I'll let you know 😁
@FelliniMotorcycle It's an experience that's all I'll say. My tinnitus was caused by music of an entirely different kind, but an enthusiastic brass section will set it off if I get carried away with the decibels, and I usually do.
Mick, I listened to the Bruckner 8 late last night in an otherwise quiet house. One hour and thirty three minutes of unsettled but optimistic turmoil. The last movement is a small symphony in itself. No tinnitus here. 🎺🎺😁
@FelliniMotorcycle A good description. The 9th feels like a continuation, more sudden mood swings and false endings. It was never finished and you're left waiting for the missing finale, seems appropriate really.
I can't tell what's happening in the sky but the roads have dried out so that must have been a relief. You have more patience than me Tim, I wouldn't be able to stay behind those two trucks, even on Bobby. I was following in Google Maps and noticed some familiar street names in Troy.
Yes, Mick, things are drying up finally. I stopped in Troy to take off the rain gear. My wife and I (and our two children) had lived in Troy for seven years nearly twenty five years ago. A very nice little town. Pleasantly, it doesn't look like it's changed much. So it was a slowish ride down memory lane, if you will. I hardly noticed the trucks. 🙂
I'm not sure I like the look of those power cables strung along those poles Tim. Ah I reckon to judge by the clunk of metal as you change down and the slightly uneven engine note we're out on the road with the Moto Guzzi again.. I decided to mute the sound a tad and then I could relax into your ride. 👍
The Guzzi is at home on the open road, not much of a country lanes machine - except for the tractor sound 🚜😮 (exaggerated by unfortunate microphone placement, I do apologize for that). Thursday videos now and for a while going forward feature the more genteel Bonneville on much more peaceful back road outings. As for the power, phone, and other cables strung on poles, it's still a thing in many older communities.... I expect that the cost of burying the cables is a factor.
At the end of Part 3 I thought that looked like an interesting road to explore and evidently so did you, not one to tackle in the rain though, not on a Bonneville anyway. Fortunately it was probably to warm for the guard dogs to chase you 👹 Thanks for a very pleasant little ride Tim 👍
I've driven by that road a few times and always wondered about it, Mick. So indeed, a nice little ride. It turns out that the Bonneville does ok on dirt and gravel if conditions aren't too wild (rain mode setting is a help), and if you take it slow and easy on the street tires 😁. More of the gravel and dirt lanes to come...
Another lovely country run out complete with stones pinging under the mudguards - oops 'fenders' and what appears to grass in the middle of the road. Classic lanes exploring. 🤗Thanks Tim
Thanks, Peter. I'd never been on that road before. A very pleasant surprise. I'm glad you enjoyed it .
Tim you've really captured the sound of the bike superbly on this one. I like it 👍 Apart from the riding on the right hand side and road ornaments this could be also be this part of the world
Yes, indeed, Peter. This is my 1999 Moto Guzzi V11 Bassa. More than a bit louder than the Triumph! I've had to turn the bike sound down quite a bit in the audio mix, but because it sounds so lovely, for a few more videos there is engine sound only, no music. The Guzzi is a heck of a lot of fun to ride, much more visceral than the Triumph, but generally plays havoc on camera stability. I'm glad you like it.
@FelliniMotorcycle Aha I thought it sounded very different - not about microphone placement at all then. Also being shaft drive with presumably an engine speed gearbox?? the gear changes are rather 'noticeable' 😂 Oh but that vee twin engine is magnificent. I could take a lot of that sound. Yes I always have to take my exhaust sound right down - around 35 % generally though with the straight thru silencer (muffler) I now have on Spitfire it's a wee bit more subdued. Great ride.
The Guzzi engine and gear box have been aptly described as "agricultural," and I guess I agree. Happily. The Guzzi is a heal toe shifter, and it always takes me a while to get used to it, so I stumble through a few upshifts and downshifts. 😁. Also, on the Triumph, the mic is to the rear of the seat, closer to the end of the pipes. For this Guzzi ride (I ride the Guzzi quite a bit generally, but almost never rig a camera to it - instead just fully immersing in the ride) the mic is placed inside the right side panel just below the seat, about halfway between the engine and pipe exhaust, and right above the gearbox. So, we really hear the gear shifts and misses!
I’ve had 4 moto guzzi’s-sp1000 v5ll-v11 sport-norge 1200gt 2 valve- I never heard a transmission sound like that. It must be the placement of your microphone near the gearbox?. I only have three videos of my Norge on my UA-cam channel that I put on a few years ago on the last ride before I sold it. I re listened to that machine and it doesn’t sound like yours.. when I was searching for the best place to put the microphone on my Venture, I did have it between the driver seat and the passenger seat, and I heard a lot of transmission and primary gears with the microphone in that location.. after about a year and a half of experimenting off, and on with microphone locations, for me, I found the best place is inside the helmet under the helmet lining just above my collar in back..
@@Jodyrides Thank you for feedback. Yes, microphone placement is the primary culprit here - and the fact that I kept missing gear shifts due to too light a touch on the shift lever. My Triumph has a much lighter and shorter shift action, and I've become used to that. Things improve somewhat as this ride progresses. The Guzzi is a great bike and a lot of fun!
The sky is looking a bit brighter Tim, you seem to be getting a break from the rain for a while, or is that just an illusion?
Yes, the rain is letting up. Finally. Watching and trying to guess the larger weather pattern for the five day trip to Kansas, I gambled that if I could get through this mess on day two, I could dodge tornadoes and such the rest of the trip west across the plains. There is some ducking and weaving still to be done, but I stay pretty dry from here on. ☔☔🦆
The waterlogged microphone burbles more and more now. I probably should have muted the bike audio track, but I didn't .....🙄
That's the first time I've noticed dry stone walls in your videos that I've watched so far Tim, after the more recent, or rebuilt, cemented ones. An interesting disused looking building in Rectortown too.
Mick, there are some dry stone walls in various states of repair throughout this area. That disused building you mention (located at what is called Lost Corner) is very interesting indeed. It has significant history during the American Civil War. Union General of the Army, George McClellan was headquartered there in early November 1862, and it was there that he received his orders from President Lincoln relieving him of command of the army. Later in the war (1864) the old store was held by the Confederate Army, and used as a prison and the site of retaliatory executions of three Union prisoners in response to Union (General George A. Custer's orders reportedly) killing of seven Confederate soldiers accused of being spies.
@FelliniMotorcycle Worth preserving, looks like it could do with a bit of attention, especially the woodwork, before it falls down!
wow. Great run. Big baldy was sure cool.
Yes, the eagle was super cool. Riding around Pennsylvania, you'll see eagles, deer, elk, bears, rattlesnakes, hawks, turkeys, and the occasional wild coed.😁
Bald Eagle at 14:10. Pretty cool
It was one helluva day.
You must have some soggy extremities by now Tim. I carry over-boots and gloves for these occasions but I once made the stupid mistake of putting my over-boots outside my waterproof trousers, not a mistake I will repeat. Within a few miles the over-boots were full to the brim and I could barely lift my foot over the seat to get off the bike! I didn't like the look of those tar snakes, we don't get many over here but I've ridden over a few slippery ones.
Yes, Mick, very soggy gloves, boots, and socks. But it was reasonably warm, so I'm ok. The water was beginning to take its toll on the external microphone, and eventually on the camera itself. I wouldn't fully understand what was happening to the recording gear until I got to Kansas 😂
And still it do rain 🌧️. But a very enjoyable ride nonetheless 🏍️👍
'Twas a long slog. And many miles to ride. Confession: it was very fun. Every minute. ☔🦆
@FelliniMotorcycle I can understand that you found it enjoyable riding through the rain Tim - there's something rather special about it that I find too. I also enjoy walking in it with good wet weather gear 😊. It's quiet for one thing as most folk hide away inside Living on the UK West Coast it's a given that it's going to be wet pretty regularly 😂
The Albeniz is an excellent choice and very much a favourite. This video is from some time ago to judge by the trees and grass. And blue skies too - just what's wanted for our winter enjoyment with short days and wet roads. Thanks Tim
Spot on, Peter. This video is from the first week of September. Second in a series where I'm headed to a road (a beautiful little lane actually, the coming fourth part of the series) I've never been on before. And while I've previously filmed this particular Marshall stretch, I take advantage of the great light and film it again 🌞😁
This is a beautiful ride and series of videos, well done! I just drove through this section a couple of nights ago (4 wheels, not 2), you all might want to be aware that there's a section of the hairpins that's currently under construction, and not as well marked as it could be, with edges of the road marked with barrels, some loose gravel on the road surface, that sort of thing. It made an already intense section of road even more harrowing. Still a fun and certainly exhilarating ride, but I would advise everyone to slow down and be even more careful than usual.
@@tunahead7275 Thanks so much for the feedback and the heads up concerning current road conditions. I'm very happy you enjoyed this video series. It was a terrific ride.
Nice ride. I spent the night on the astronomy field at Cherry Springs state park near there a few months ago.
@dangunn6961 Yes, I know the place. We rode through there last year, stopped at the Cherry Springs Country Store for ice cream. Beautiful country. ***Whoops, we rode through there, and rode past the Cherry Springs County Store - we stopped later, if I remember correctly, in Sinnamahoning State Park for ice cream. So many great rides in Pennsylvania, I'm starting to mix things up! 😅
Hello Tim. That road could be here!! True Lanes-Explorer stuff. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you - great video ❤️
Peter, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. More Virginia back lanes and bimbles to come, sprinkled in amidst the Pennsylvania and Kansas rambles. Nothing here quite like North West England, but we make do. 🌞
@FelliniMotorcycle very much looking forward to that,Tim. 👍
This is such beautiful country.
It really is. A joy to ramble through.
Hmmm, I prefer dry, warm and not too sunny but as those days are as rare as hens teeth... Definitely don't ride or drive at night, I leave all that to Mick.
Not my first choice either, but when caught out in it and a long way from home, we ride on. 🛵☕☕
@FelliniMotorcycle Yes and you've a long way yet to go 😊 And I've another dry, sunny ride to enjoy with tonight, I see 👍
I'm hoping to get out again tomorrow. Looks to be warm and sunny. Get 'em while we can. 🌞
@FelliniMotorcycle 👍
I hope that's warm rain Tim 😊 I know you're not keen on riding in the dark and freezing cold but I have to say I prefer that to riding in the rain, and as for riding in the dark when it's raining... 😨
Wet, but not cold. It rained all morning that day. The rain gear kept me dry and warm. ☔🦆
Aaaahhh sunshine and blue skies plus a lovely motorcycle ride... after days of grey skies here in the UK this is delightful. Thank you Tim
The weather here just now is beautiful, Peter. I hope for a bit of a ride out tomorrow. I'm happy you enjoyed this video.
Oh lovely - a sunny ride with you to enjoy over breakfast. Wonderful ☕☕☕🥐
Thank you, Peter. ☕
A pleasant and relaxing ride apart from the idiot. Some people really are too stupid to be allowed to own a motor vehicle, why you would put your own and other's safety at risk for the sake of taking a few extra seconds to reverse into your driveway, or turn around if there's room, is beyond me.
Safety third...
And despite the dreadful conditions that Bonneville keeps on running. Now I think I would have popped in somewhere - a little tea room perhaps run by a delightful elderly couple. Pot of tea and thickly buttered crumpets. Mmmm. But you're made of sterner stuff than Lanes-Explorer, of course 👍😂.
Peter, I had thought as much myself, planning to stop in Circleville, but I realized that the rain wasn't going to let up any time soon, and that if I stopped I'd never have the will to put the rain gear back on and saddle up... Many miles to ride. Plus, I knew that there was a dry warm hotel room waiting for me at the end of the day. ☔☔☕😁
@FelliniMotorcycle Yes, Mick (5d traveller) would have had exactly those thoughts too, I'm sure, as he always seems to be racing against the clock.
Too, tea and crumpets are hard to come by in these parts, sadly. 😕
Thanks Tim, a very enjoyable series.
Thanks, Mick, for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
This is a wonderful road Tim, very similar to some in The Highlands but in much better condition. Watching this makes me want to take my K1600 west but that will have to wait until next year now.
I hadn't been on this road in years, and had forgotten how curvey it was. It must have been recently resurfaced. The autumn colors made the whole ride sublime. We've still got some riding weather left in the session here, I'm going to try and get out once or twice more.
@FelliniMotorcycle I'll be out on Bobby over the winter, much easier to handle on slippery roads than the big, heavy K1600. I'd like to get some recordings of snow covered landscapes, we'll see...
Your man on the Harley obviously has confidence in his tyres, he probably changes them often and because the sides are worn out rather than the middle, a big bike like that will chew them up pretty quickly at those angles. The colours in the trees are beautiful in that sunshine.
Mick, whatever he was riding on, he tore through those curves quickly and with ease. Overall, it was a perfect day.
That Emergency Operations Center must be a crappy place to work -- they need inward-facing barbed wire to keep employees from leaving
@@bearleft9009 Nothing lays out the welcome matt like barbed wire. 🙂
I'm finally up to date! You're getting a good soaking now, I have no idea what the choir is singing but it sounds suitably sombre. I'm enjoying this but I hope your waterproofs are up to it, if it carries on for much longer I'll be surprised if you don't spring a leak or two.
Mick, rain gear worked perfect (my feet and hands got wet, but otherwise dry). Camera and external mic eventually succumb to the rain, but I carry an extra camera on long rides as backup. Cleverly, I didn't properly set the settings on the backup camera, so not so good. No good wringing my hands over it now, things managed to work out eventually. Why do I have to learn everything the hard way?😂
@@FelliniMotorcycle Wet hands and feet are tolerable, anywhere else definitely isn't 😬 I always carry spare cameras too, I've had to use them quite a few times and have lost two permanently to the rain. You and the bike kept going though and that's the important bit 👍
Yep that's definitely rain - even the Bonneville seems to be feeling it ☔
Yes. A little giggle to myself here, remembering now that the music for this one is Song of the Spirits over the Waters. It rained that day all morning, and eventually put my microphone out of commission. And fogged up the camera, which cascaded into other camera mishaps, mostly operator error. Still, it was a great trip.
@@FelliniMotorcycle Mick 5d Traveller would be so impressed. I certainly am!!
Peter, Mick is the stuff of legends. I just got caught out in the rain, and was snuggly warm in my hotel by late afternoon. Let us sing praises to good rain gear! ☔☔🦆
@@Lanes-Explorer5733 Yes Peter, I am 👍
@@FelliniMotorcycle Thanks Tim but I'm just a slightly mad old man who still gets a kick out of pushing the limits, looks to me like your pretty much the same!
12:29 is why we keep two fingers on that front brake. 🙂
And carry a spare pair of underpants ...
Good evening Tim. Does 'VA' mean Virginia? What time of year and day is this? There's quite a lot more traffic about than we normally see on your rides Last question... Is 'The Plains' an area of wide open space or the name of that town?
Yes sir, VA is Virginia. This was filmed in late June of this year, late morning as I recall. Overcast. There does tend to be a bit of traffic on that road. And The Plains is the somewhat odd name of the small town at the end of the ride. Not a particularly beautiful video, I admit, but included here for documentation as much as anything. We'll probably, my wife and I, move from this area in the next two or three years, and a memory book of the motorbike roads will be nice to have.
@@FelliniMotorcycle Yeah man, build out that catalog. I'll be mining your video collection for my own rides.😎
@@bearleft9009 Likewise to you. I am looking forward to more PA riding, and your catalog looks to serve me well. Good stuff.
For a ride this epic, I would have chosen Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries.
Wagner wrote some great motorbike music, no doubt about it!
Simply wonderful Tim. Not unlike some of our roads in Wales
My wife and I are tentatively planning a trip to Wales next May timeframe. And a drive up to the Lake District as well, and maybe a nip into Scotland. Hopefully, everything aligns and we are able to make the trip. Pretty excited to do so.
@@FelliniMotorcycle sounds like a wonderful idea Tim 😊
I'm getting to understand Mr Pirsig's book a little more watching your rides, Tim. Such emptiness... I would need a companion for the journey I think. Even the music you've chosen seems to cry out for a fellow traveller. 😊
I prefer riding with someone else, but the long trips alone once in a while are restorative. 🙂
The great advantage of closed roads is that you generally have them all to yourself 👍
Yes, and there are so many more to explore. I hadn't been on Maidstone Road in a few years, but I've since revisited it a couple of times, and intend to ride there again today.
@@FelliniMotorcycle great. Enjoy your weekend riding with your friend 👍
Great clip, 10/10. I've haven't been on that section of 414 yet. Definitely going on the list though.
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Waterville Country Store has great burgers and milkshakes. A pretty much perfect ride.
It finally got you, we always seem to put off putting on the rain gear until it's too late, I hope yours is good.
Mick, this one time I actually put on the rain gear in time. Worked like a charm.
You were lucky if you managed to keep dodging those downpours Tim. Looking at the map you're about a quarter of the way now.
Off and on the whole ride to Kansas, I managed to dodge some pretty nasty storms. The persistent rain this second morning did end up soaking me through, though. Most of the heavy weather comes in the late afternoons that time of year (late spring, early summer), and being in no hurry, I was usually safely in a hotel by that time. Of course, I turned a two day ride into five... 😁 Thanks for watching and commenting, Mick. Much appreciated.
