I've been running something similar, where my boss gets to take a turn every 3 player turns. It lets you get away with scarier bosses and auto-balances itself on party size.

idk mate I like the idea of basically still giving a boss multiple actions but spreading them out between your players actions instead of just lumping them all together. But I don't really like that that messes with one of the most fundamental concepts of round based combat, that everyone goes in turns. Because then the boss kind of doesn't anymore, he jumps in after every action basically. So the key element of being able to plan your turns around when the bosses turn is doesn't work as well anymore, especially since I'd assume you don't just announce this mechanic at start after they roll initiative, that'd be awkward af. Maybe it would feel less like that if the boss was just able to react to more things? E.g. enemy spells being cast gives them a burst of arcane energy and they can react with an action and things like that. That way it's not a "turn" that gets thrown in but triggers based on player actions, and it would give them a way of learning what they are and avoiding them without basically just having to announce the extra turns at the start. And it would give more room for interesting design, e.g. they can only react to magic by casting spells or things like that.

Very good ideas! Here's some more, from a game I came up with recently: The lower hp you are, the more effective critical hits are against you. If you are at half your max hp or less, you roll with disadvantage on just about everything. These rules apply to enemies as well!

One more issue, you fight just as well with full health and with just 1 HP. I also played Shadowrun for a while, there you get a massive debuff the more damage you have.

I’m gonna make a changing character who makes a new persona for every found family they have, in the campaign(when i eventually find one) the party is their fourth. And when they finally reveal themselves as a changeling and hopefully a fellow party member asks why they didn’t say anything sooner the changeling just says “well most people leave me behind once I do… I enjoy hanging with you guys and I- I don’t know… I just don’t want you leave too.”
