So you run it on BACKWASH the first time until it gets clear? Not sure how to know when to switch from BACKWASH to RINSE.

do you try this with pump motor on or off? I would think we should try it with on to see if plumbing issue and off to see if structure leak ?

My system has a waste channel that goes... somewhere I don't see. It sounds like there's no way to know how long to backwash without being able to look at the water coming out? What's a good amount of time for doing it blind?

My selecta flow doesn’t have a rinse function. Just has filter, backwash, boost and waste.

can you stir the de with the water with something other than your hand? I don't have a good glove like you do, but want to mix with water, my hayward takes 6DE cups of DE. so 4 1/2C?

I don't have a rinse setting, but I do have a 'waste' setting. I used that instead if rinse, just as per directions in this video, but the dirt or some of it, still went right back into my spa. I will try keeping it on the 'waste' setting longer than 3 to 4 seconds next time!

You didn't cover what happens to the effluent of the backwash process. The 60 sq ft filter contains 6 lbs of de. Do you really want to dump that stuff on the lawn so that it gets aerosolized during mowing. DE is a lung and skin irritant especially if it gets into your lungs. So what's your solution to this very real problem. You also could have added some parameters to the backwash times because it is difficult to see what is coming out of the backflush tube because of the rapid flow.and air mix. Doing it "until" is not a fair instruction to follow.

I used tonhave cartridge filer on my old pool was easy, my new pool that im installing my installer wanta to use DE, seems like a PIA compared to cartridge.

Great company, I'm a most satisfied customer. They are always knowledgeable about my concerns or questions and prompt in responding to any problems. My maintenance man has been doing my pool for 4 years. Give them a try and you'll be glad you did.

There is a few things ive noticed in the video that is not adding up. First of all he adds DE to a EMPTY bucket, that in it self is correct as you do not know what residual you have in the bucket which is why its important to always add chemical to water NOT the other way around. Also near the end of the video he was lying about the filter pressure because if you look closely at his gauge, there was no pressure present when he said he was running it. A for effort and for his description however F for lying to everyone and not giving a clearer explanation on how to PROPERLY add de to the bucket.

Thank you, you’re fantastic!! I’m slowly taking control of my 40,000 gallon pool. It’s about 70 years old now and it’s a solid concrete beast built by my grandfather. I’ve learned that once you tackle pool stuff slowly, eventually it starts to make sense and, yes you can do it. Don’t overwhelm yourself with how-tos to the point it becomes so confusing. I’m also engaging with my younger more active neighbors and encouraging them to take care of their own pool. It’s been fun and rewarding helping them along the way. Hopefully their young son will take care of my pool some day when I can no longer do it myself.

What If I only have a backwash valve and not a multiport with a rinse or waste option?

Attention!!!!! Your scoop is 0.5 LB of DE not 1 LB. So you should add 9 scoops = 4.5 LB of DE One full scoop is 0.5 LB of DE. 1 LB Scoop is 0.5 LB of DE DE scoop has the same volume as a 1 lb can of coffee, not weight. DE is measured by volume not weight. 1 scoop = 5 sq. ft.

When would you recommend this backwash only approach versus taking the filter top off and spraying down manifold and filters with a hose? Under what conditions would you recommend one over the other?
