Introduction to Association Croquet
Basic Association Croquet - Basingstoke Croquet Club
Переглядів 89 тис.8 років тому
This is an introduction to association croquet by Ian Harrison from Basingstoke Croquet Club
When I was a kid these sets were every where. They could be found at yard sales. We had a set when I was a toddler but my whole life I never knew how it was played. Fascinating.
The game did start in France on the magnificent lawns of Versailles palace and initially played by the very idle, bored and debauched aristocracy. The French Revolution ended this passion. 😢
Great game. I am now teaching this game to our Society in Tricities, India.
Don't forget to take the clips off. Good video.
0:52 Draughts = Checkers in US. Had to look it up, never heard the word Draughts before.
If the opponent does not see an off side ball, is it not better to stay silent on the mater rather than volunteer the mistake?
A question that I can't seem to get the same answer for. Hoping you can help. If my ball is the the jaws and the opponent jumps my ball doesn't hit my ball makes the hoop and roles past half way. In the process of jumping my ball he hits the hoop and rattlers it making my ball now roll through. So I won the hoop and he is now past half way without hitting my ball. Is he off side ?
No. 8.3.1 A ball is not an offside ball if it is already subject to an offside direction or, subject to Rule 8.3.2, if it reached its final position by: (a) the stroke just played;
I'm still waiting to know the objective of the game....
Are you British,?
Wigs and powder should be obligatory for playing this game. Also large quantities of claret and not bathing recommended. More seriously it looks like a very enjoyable pastime. Thanks for well described and shot video.
Thanks from down under!
Thank you for the videos
The more hoops the more beer.
There has been a change in Rule 5. Now, subject to rule 5.3.2, the sides are to decide the order of play by tossing a coin or by an equivalent procedure. The winning side NOW decides whether to play first or second. The side to play first becomes the striker's side and plays the first stroke of the game with the blue ball or the equivalent alternative colour.
Thank you Ian. You should do them all again with the new changes of the rules.
Thank you Ian, you express and demonstrate very clearly, most helpful.
Thank you very much
Fuck that
Very clear!
Thanks for taking time to explain basics. I have been using the grip featuring one hand down the shaft, and wondering why I couldn't get the ball to "travel". More effort less accuracy.....realise now I was pushing the.mallet through!
Thank you, very clear indeed!
Ian, just taken up croquet. Thank you your series was very helpful.
Hi Ian - loved this series, many thanks for taking the effort to produce this unique and valuable resource. Can I please seek clarification on the point you make at 12:06? My reading of rule 7.5.4 is that the ball attempting to run a hoop from the non-playing side only needs to clear the jaws from the NON playing side before being knocked through in the scoring direction.
So I presume that these techniques apply to association croquet as well? That is, the difference between the two games is the rules and not striking techniques?
I am in Uganda - East Africa and I will certainly enjoy this game that I only played about 20 years ago. Good video
Golf croquet is great.Association is dying.Long dull game played by pedants and servants. Golf croquet is easy fun and social.
Interesting. I prefer Association. I also prefer wooden tennis racquets, white balls and clothing. I appreciate the original games and find them much more enjoyable.
@@elmoreglidingclub3030 people are playing tennis nude these days?
Looks like a barrel of laughs. If you love petty rules youl love croquet. Change second colour balls to be the same but with a line around them. Second colour balls are confusing .
I‘m starting to learn Golf Croquet, but I can‘t yet remember the colour order. The peg will hopefully help me. Secondary colors are actually quite similar to first colours, but your idea would cut that mapping process at once.
Thanks very much for these videos.
Did you not need to show us how the game STARTS? That seems like an important information.
Fantastic, thanks for your video 👏🏼
Haha I'm the least Croquet person ever but I rate this game, it's fun af
This is an excellent series. I think that inexperienced players would benefit from a bit more detail on the basic strokes. For example, is it recommended to hold the mallet firmly…in one hand or both; should the striker’s legs be straight or flexed; and how much of the striking action involves the wrists and how much the arms But, a great series. It's not a farmer's tan, it's a croquet tan. And I'm sticking with it
Originally formed in ireland this game precursor to billiards
Thank you for the explanation.. I notice when you strike the balls you have the mallet up above the grass..
Haha you guys are all old
Are you still this lame?
Are you guys all old people
depends what you mean by old
Many thanks. Learned a lot about croquet.

Tony: the balls stay where they rest. Sometimes it's done deliberately! This old series is now out of date - the rules changed in 2019. Please see the updated series on the Basingstoke website www.basingstokecroquet.co.uk
Love the series, however, at 4.16 red clears blue which then hits the opponent and is prevented from running on. Do you leave the blue ball where it has been stopped, or move it to a location where you both agree it would have reached. Or does the striker make this choice? Thanks.
Brits for whatever reason to have an innate ability to make EVERYTHING boring.
This is a very useful series, thanks. Very clearly expressed and filmed.
Thanks Keith. You appear to be watching the original series which has now been superseded due to the change in GC rules in 2018. The current series is on the Basingstoke website (www.basingstokecroquet.co.uk). I am currently making a companion series for AC. Best wishes, Ian
I would like printed direction of playing and setting up the Croquet field
Dear Ruth If you go to the Croquet Association website - www.croquet.org.uk - you will find the details on the drop down box headed "The games" Best wishes Ian
Great tutorial and very useful. Golf croquet is more popular than association here in New Zealand.
Thanks Gay: GC is more popular here too - largely because games are shorter and the rules are easier to understand
Nat: in theory it is possible for (say) the red to run a hoop and then use another ball (eg the yellow) to get to the next hoop, run that, and carry on until 12 hoops have been run. It's not easy! And then the opponent has a turn. If you're that good you'll be world champion in no time!
Not expecting an answer, but couldn't the red ball every turn hit the yellow one, through the hoops. So that team has infinite turns and win before team two can go?
U
Dear June: your message was incomplete - did you wish to say something? Please note that the videos have now been completely revised in line with the 5th Edition Rules for GC. You can see the latest versions on the Basingstoke CC website (www.basingstokecroquet.co.uk)
Thank you very much . I am better preafr
Better prepared for my initial croquet session.
Mr. Parr?!?
Thank you Ian, I am part of a croquet club here in Ireland. We have many competitions and the rules are almost always up for debate among our members. I'm going to show them your videos as you're excellent at demonstrating and explaining the rules. Also I would be interested in buying the green rule book, where could I get one of these please.
Dear Hillary Thank you for your message. I'm afraid the "green book" (GC Rules 4th Edition) is no longer current but has been replaced by the "blue book" - GC Rules, 5th Edition - in England & Wales from 1 March 2019. I presume Ireland will have followed suit. You can download a copy free from the World Croquet Federation website www.worldcroquet.org.uk or buy a copy from the CA shop www.croquet.org.uk. The new rules bring in some important changes - eg non-striking faults are abolished and the wrong ball rules are simplified. I am currently re-making the videos, but I'm afraid it takes time!
@@ianharrison4792 Thank you Ian for your prompt informative reply. The non striking rule was just brought on board at our last competition and caused a lot of bother so now I can go back to our members with this information, thank again Ian.
Thank you: you don't say where you are so I don't know if there's a Croquet Club near you. Most Clubs are delighted to offer coaching and will have mallets to borrow. Go and enjoy!!
