Hi Garden Friends!
We are taking a trip back to this fall when I planted up some nandina bush in my back garden. In this video I address some common concerns and mistakes people make when planting and caring for Nandina and how to do so in the most conscientious way. Do you have any nandina in your yard? How do you maintain it?

    I have a well established garden. Sheet mulching isn't practical any longer. Instead I apply a granular pre emergent weed killer twice yearly. It keeps the need for weeding to a low level.

    Great video! I would sprinkle on some slow release fertilizer and some Preen right at the plant bases before applying the cardboard and the mulch. You’d be surprised at how much that helps.

    Hi Crystal, Beginner here, and so Id like to just pull up the weeds and add the mulch with some fake plants maybe. Do you suggest, I use weed killer 1st before using the cardboard? Thank you.

  • @Mel-p9o
    @Mel-p9o 5 місяців тому

    The cardboard last approximately 2 years then it breaks down and the weeds start again. The clients should know this.

  • @philipmeeks776

    would the cardboard not just break down in a couple of months and become fertilizer for weeds and grass in that mulch bed?

    Greetings from Ireland, Great job, Its the bees knees. I started a no dig garden veg bed ten years ago and it works well. I make my own compost to top up the bed every year. I use the rest of the compost to mulch my flower beds every year that were dug out twenty years ago. Pity I did not know about Charles Dowding at the time it would have saved me digging.

    Came out great! I've been using the cardboard and mulch combo in my yard for years. We have really aggressive weeds and I have to put a minimum of four layers of cardboard (two boxes folded up). It has worked great. I've never watered it in. Also, aside from keeping the cardboard away from the base of your plants for watering purposes, its also good because cardboard and mulch touching the stem/trunks of plants can cause rot.

    That's good thinking with the wire compost bin as oxygen can get into the pile better than with a regular compost setup such as the bins I'm using which do make the regular appearance in my monthly youtube garden videos. I decided to leave it though as I do work a shovel into my bins to get some oxygen in there. Thanks for sharing :)

    I live in zone 6 and Heavenly Bamboo is not considered invasive in my zone. It does wonderfully and I would highly recommend them for their texture and color. Also, in the 15 yrs. I've been growing them (I have 6 or 7 very large plants), I've never seen a bird near them. I can't explain why, but I'm wondering if they put off a scent. Also, I use the berries for outdoor christmas container decorations, and they are beautiful.
