    Enjoyed this video. I first thought Mrs. Surratt was innocent until I did more research. I believe the public also believed she was guilty at the time of the trial but opinion began to change after she was hung. People didn't view women as criminals, they didn't even view women as being smart enough to vote or handle business. I also don't think the public thought the government would kill her, even if found guilty. She was the first woman hanged by the federal government. Women were mothers and nuturers. When Lizzie Borden was tried for murder the majority of the public believed a woman could not commit such a heinous murder. However, when she was found not guilty, that same public shunned her the rest of her life. It really had nothing to do with evidence, it was just how things were at that time. There is a slim chance that Mary Surratt didn't know exactly what was planned, especially that the plan had changed from kidnapping to murder, but she knew something illegal was happening. She could have said no to taking supplies to the tavern or to letting them meet at her boarding house. Also, by not reporting the suspicious activity, she allowed the President to be murdered. I'm going to have to get this book!

    I think that is a crucial observation "Betty held on to her anger to remain connected to Dan". We tend to underestimate the sheer force of habit. Betty had entirely devoted herself to creating Mrs. Broderick. She did not know how to be anyone else. Dan stripped that persona away from her in the divorce. In a very real sense, Betty felt herself erased from existence. Remaining in the role of the "wronged wife" was her only means to remain Mrs. Broderick in any capacity and that meant remaining in a constant state of anger. Letting go of that anger would be acknowledging that the marriage was truly over and in the past. She would have to accept not being Mrs. Broderick anymore and Betty was incapable of that. Is wasn't about letting go of Dan as much as being unable to let go of the only self she knew, the identity she had constructed with so many years of energy and dedication.

    I don’t know about Jennifer enjoying a “thrill of deception”. I’m getting more “relief of escaping or delaying scary-to-her accountability/consequences of her actions” vibes. Because her parents didn’t allow her to have any friends, she had probably looked to her boyfriend to fulfill her every unfulfilled socio-emotional need. I bet you he came to represent a lot more than a typical significant other, to her. It seems like her parents had heavily brainwashed her for decades, by constantly micromanaging her- it sends her the message that she’s not capable of making her own decisions and choices. It may not be, that she was taking the easy way out- for her, she may really have felt like murder was her only way out! To be clear, I’m not saying I think she was in any way entitled to take her parents’ lives - I do think her parents set her up to have massive problems, but they were clearly doing what they thought was best- Jennifer needed to build a support network for herself, outside of her home IMO. What if she had undiagnosed learning differences, and would have just needed reasonable accommodations, like tutoring and/or possibly meds. She may have only needed more time for her brain to finish developing

    i gotta say, this individual is pretty damn privileged. yes, he had a traumatic experience -- but a LOT of people have been through something bad + scary, man, and a lot worse. the amount of self-pitying and smug self-congratulation is rather jarring compared to the majority of the other episodes on this (brilliant) podcast. he's just clearly told this hundreds of times, and thinks that he's the most hard-done-by guy in the world because of his one rather horrible experience. but wow he hasn't learned much strength from it if he's still this insecure.

    Obsession It is a fixation that leads to destroy any person who prevents from achieving what a sick mind is desiring to obtain. That is a fixation and they won’t stop until obtaining what has been desired. Destroying someone elses’s Lives. It is more than an elixir to surpass a desire when someone is interrupting or getting in the middle of what that sick mind expects to appropriate. There will never accept NO fof an answer. What a way to destroy even their own humanity.,

    I’ve always been a huge long time fan of yours from seeing your input on ‘Deadly Women’.. but, I’ve noticed, &; I definitely may be wrong, but, it appears to me that you’ve left out significant events that took place; &; other significant events you’ve either mixed up the timeline on or mixed up the actual facts of what really happened.. or loosely spoke on what happened, leaving a lot out and basically not painting or portraying what actually happened.. this is the first time I’ve noticed you’ve been so off the mark and off base.. but then again, this is the first narration I’ve heard of yours. Everything else you’ve been giving your educated input. I seriously feel you didn’t do the multiple victims and actual severity of the horror that is this woman justice by not doing justice on the what actually happened.. 😕😕..

    The prosecution did NOT turn over the 3,000+ pages of data/evidence to the defense. It was the defense who initiated the Touhy Process w/ the Feds to request the production of their findings (so far) from their ongoing investigation. The Feds were/are still investigating the DA’s Office & the investigators for public corruption in THIS case. Karen Read is the victim in the federal investigation. The defense has evidence of things like the conflicted Lead Investigator, Michael Proctor-who finally admitted to a federal grand jury that he’d lied to mislead the state grand jury-about how he’s lifelong family friends with the Albert’s & McCabe’s, or the very suspects/potential suspects he was supposed to be investigating. The defense also has an abundance of evidence that Michael Proctor planted evidence-they’re certainly not just going to “hope” a jury “believes” that. They’ve got proof!

    Great analysis of a notorious American tragedy that has continued to fascinate true crime addicts ever since. It is a shame that MacDonald has languished in prison for nearly as long as that other doctor who snapped and killed his pregnant wife, Dr. Sam Sheppard, was alive. Sheppard's son maintained his father's innocence more than thirty years after his father's death at age forty-six in 1970, the same year the MacDonald family members were murdered at Fort Bragg. Jeff MacDonald is now eighty-years-old and has been incarcerated in the penetentiary for forty-three of the last forty-five years, more than half his own life span. Doctors are often overworked, spend long hours at a grueling pace, and can snap on the spur of the moment. Both of these crimes seem to indicate such circumstances.

    • @mc7477
      @mc7477 Місяць тому

      Of course not! I was just pointing out how similar those two brutal cases were (the first two instances of high profile defendants, both of whom were physicians, who killed their pregnant wives) and the fact that one was acquitted after ten years in prison while the other was sent to prison permanently after avoiding prosecution for nearly ten years. MacDonald deserves to be where he is, but unlike the Stuart, Peterson, Watts, and Messing murders, his crimes were not premeditated and planned beforehand. He snapped, as Dr. Sam probably did. I’m just grateful Sam Sheppard didn’t kill his son Chip. HBO has a nine episode podcast you can also find on UA-cam about the 1989 Stuart case in Boston. It is equally fascinating.
