BTW, for the benefit of your (possibly USA tourists), locally, Aldeburgh is pronounced " All-burra", Flamlingham is pronounced “Framlingum”, and Lowestoft is pronounced “Lower-stoft”. Although I am a Yorkshireman (pronounced “Yorksha-man” or “Yocksha-man”), I am a Suffolk resident of more than 52 years, so I really have heard and understood the correct pronunciations.

Popularity plays some role, imo, and I'm sure Cather is read more than Melville or Faulkner. You have also omitted some great American playwrights.
