292 SYMPATHETIC REBUILD: ENGINE PAINT WITH POR-15 | HEMMINGS ‘36 CHEVROLET PANEL
So, maybe we’re cheap. Sure, we could go out and buy a newly remanufactured 292 and live in confidence that it won’t let us down, but what fun is there in that? Sometimes, just the thrill of hoping the vehicle we’re driving will get there is reward enough.
Plus, don’t most of us question the expense that we’re willing to pay and that sometimes, other priorities get in the way of making the full investment necessary. With the Hemmings 1936 Chevrolet panel truck being a part of our collection in Bennington, Vermont, we believe that part of the attraction is proving we can make good with a modest investment of funds while pouring hours of labor and parts chasing to get us to the finish line.
As the final triage of both our 250ci inline six and its fatal valvetrain situation as well as the barn find 292 oil pan knock determined, it’s time to simply tear the latter down and evaluate its condition in hopes that we can literally seal it all up, replace a few service parts that time has not been friendly to, and get this truck back on the road.
We’ll up-cycle most of the parts and in doing so take careful note of placing the mated surfaces back in the same place they were. We close up this episode with a focus on the aesthetic using the POR-15 3-Step Method to guarantee a lasting result for the engine painting process.

Last year, the intrepid staff of Hemmings Classic Car was on the road in the Hemmings minivan when a traveler at a gas stop had a mild interrogation of Editor Matt Litwin and Senior Editor David Conwill. The conversation came down to this, “C’mon guys. A minivan? Hemmings can do better than that?” Matt and Dave are not likely to back down but said traveler had a point. But with the success of t...

As for "not abusing it", dude, it's a race car: it's meant to be used hard. Also, the 8-lugs, when properly prepped, would nosedive your Pontiac to the front bump-stops. Personally though, I'd re-gear it to maybe 3.70 or so.

Just installed the same system. Outside temp 85f and the vent temp 54f. The old factory ac system was much colder. Wish I would have just rebuilt it after the compressor died.

That shaft that you installed doesn't eliminate lock up. The shaft you installed is just a hardened version of the original shaft. It splines into the direct drum(3rd and 4th gear) on one end and the front cover of the torque converter on the other end. It's a direct drive shaft. The input shaft that eliminates lockup is a whole different shaft.

knock the dent out of the oil pan as nice as possible and new gasket - and new oil and filter - run it again with radiator and gas tank let it run for min 30 minutes , shut it down and run a compression test and see what it is and if it is even in all cylinders and good and high 80 - 100 psi , is what i would recommend

That certainly qualified as a "That Figures" moment. If it needs to be rebuilt in the future I consider taking it down the mild speed parts trail, but for the moment a replaced oil pan and clean up and paint is in order. Money may be better spent on other repairs. I'm looking forward to this build like all your others. Grand video. Thank you.

This is a fantastic look at the history of Chinatown and the car and motorcycle culture that emerged from it, at that time. I lived through it too - hanging out at gas stations, auto parts houses, and garages with our cars. You did a terrific job of capturing the scene, with all the personalities and values of the youth back then. Thanks for a great documentary!
