Why work without permits is a bad idea.
Переглядів 3872 роки тому
I often am asked if companies really have to pull permits. My response is that any company that tried to skirt around getting a permit is a company that I don't want to deal with. Building codes have been established to ensure the proper construction of structures and should be factored in to the price of any construction project when they are needed.

Can a good Hepi filter unit catch airborne asbestos particles?
After initially suspecting asbestos, I think I just got white paint with regular duct tape as a few spots of tape peeled away and I could see gray where the paint didn't cover. I am using this stuff called Fibercock ABC for encapsulation anyway. For bigger jobs you want a P100 rated respirator, a hazmat suit, googles and plastic sheathing to seal off doors, windows and vents, and a shop vac with a HEPA filter. Get a 2 gallon sprayer for water to spray down areas before removal of things like tiles. Work inside out. Do your tiles first, cleanup, then do your drywall and clean up. You should be able to find something to eat mastic and then scrape it up with a squeegee. Double bag the trash and label it. Find the nearest landfill that can take hazmat and dump it off. Do a final clean of a room with wet mop and toss mop in trash. Mist the air around you to capture any airborne particles. You should be fine as long as you take all the precautions and isolate work areas.
My grandpa died of asbestos exposure. he did car mechanics in the 50s and nuclear energy later on. Both exposed him to asbestos.
"The problem is when it becomes airborne" after snapping a tile in front of his face.
Great video. I have a basement full of them but very solid and it looks sealed with a clear coat. I am leaving it and going over with tile. Do you recommend sealing with a paint or something then tile over ?
We are removing asbestos zonolite plus armstrong flooring on our newly purchased .5 mil home. Im super glad we did actual research instead of listening to uninformed content like this.
Always use 3m, NIOSH full face resperator
Omg, wtf are you doing? You know better! Lead by a safe example. This is not it.
...too late 😭
I just encapsulated an asbestos tile floor that was in good repair with epoxy garage floor coating. Ran several coats up to about 3mm and then used a moisture barrier and covered in LVP. Hopefully solved the issue.
Wow, you really need to learn about respirators before giving advice. Those respirators you've shown are great for asbestos work, but both would need the proper filter. You've shown them with black cartridges which filter out organic vapors. They do not stop particulates, such as asbestos. For asbestos, you need purple or magenta filters (P100/N100/R100). Yes, you have a particulate PRE filter on one cartridge, but that is not rated for asbestos. And an orange or lemon for fit testing? Come on. You are putting people at risk with this nonsense.
Would it be best to wet it down first?
Wow. That's crazy. $1000 to swap part and labor $1500 emergency call.
How often should you replace an ejector pump?
1) For a worker on a job, it is illegal and unsafe to use either of these respirators with a beard. Homeowners can do what they want, but they have to know that they will not be protected with that beard. 2) Both respirators he shows are for organic vapors, they is not effective or legal for asbestos dust, you need P100 or HEPA filter cartridges instead, 3) Using a lemon to test the fit is not great, there are better tests you can do just with your hands, which are still not sufficient, but better than a lemon.
Wow is this man still alive?
It takes 20 to 30 years before you are dead.
Does it have to be painted or sealed? We have asbestos tiles and are laying down flooring over them but I don't know if it's been sealed. They had carpet over them initially.
Renovating old kitchen, removing lower cabinets revealed massive amount of water damage. Dad started sawing the subfloor to see how many joists were affected. Then we saw there are asbestos tiles under on of the layers of flooring. He power sawed the heck out of it before we even knew. Dust everywhere. Hvac on. Like what now 😬😬😬
What did you guys do?
The epa says homeowners can remove asbestos,
Can I send you an email with some photos?
Nice,thanks!!
Any videos how to remove it instead
The tiles we found under carpet in my basement are in about the same condition as these. You messing with them makes me feel better. They scare me and it’s going to take months for us to save up enough money to get them abated.
Everyone has been exposed one way or another . The shit is still everywhere
Exactly!!
In fact if your not certified for asbestos abatement, you shouldn't be removing that asbestos.
Dont touch that junk. Get it removed
Huh? So the pipes can get hot - 180 -200F. How long is rhat plastic going to last even with the insulation between it??!! And where your terminations at the exposed pipe - I'm sure that melting plastic smells good!
My mom house was built in 1970 through 1971. However years ago carpet was installed. My question is I wanted remove the vile, bacteria filled carpet with laminated wood floor. The said the floors needed to be tested for asbestos before they could the laminated flooring.
recently my bungalow flood with water due to loft pipe burst, after removing the laminate floor noticed there is asbestos flooring below with bitumen. Almost three weeks running dehumidifer, still mositure on it but it's good in shape.. can i install the flooring tiles, on top current absestos tiles ? is there health risk installing on soaked absestos tiles? kindly advise
dont touch it with your hands!!! you should be wearing ppe! very dangerous.
I know this video is from a few years ago but is touching the asbestos wrap/tape like you did dangerous? Does that release invisible fibers? I am asking because some people say not to touch it at all but I had a certified asbestos inspector touch mine in the basement.
Certified asbestos Inspector, supervisor and Air Sampler here. It is safe to touch you just need to wash your hands after. Inhaling and ingesting is only way it has adverse health effects on human body. Now you could argue that touching it, and then touching your mouth may cause the ingestion to happen, but thats why you must wash hands immediately after. Using gloves is recommended!
@@chrisseelen1281 what if you touch it and it becomes airbourne?
@@meandnature6452 good question. Where I'm from to be considered Friable it has to, when wet, crumble under hand pressure and contain greater than 1% asbestos. When you touch it, you should wet it down first to help lock the fibers down. Keep the touching to the absolute minimum you can to make the determination. If a small amount of fibers get released its not really a major deal. There are permissible exposure limits that are considered safe. Alot of people are actually exposed daily and they don't even know it. In America its still used in various products such as brake pads on cars. If your standing on a city street corner and cars and busses are stopping for traffic lights there is most likely asbestos fibers floating around in the air. When working in bigger cities we actually have to establish an alternative air quality standard because the existing air is already considered contaminated. And we need to just show were not making it any worse doing our work.
@@chrisseelen1281 okay yeah ive heard we are beeing exposed to it daily, but in very small doses. you could get a lifetime dose of asbestos in just 8 hours cutting asbestos pipes. Its scary stuff
@@chrisseelen1281 but at my work we were demoing a kitchen without testing anything! and if it was asbestos do you think i could have taken it home with me? on my clothes etc. Can i test the indoor air in my house somehow? im very worried
Save big money at Menards! You must be from the midwest? Keep it up
Chicago Area
Previous owner wrapped up, how can I be sure he didn't leave fibers to settle I was just on the basement floor, and what can I do about that?
Depending on how long ago the pipes were wrapped the falling fibers may be long gone. If you visibly see fibers on the floor in places, it should be properly cleaned up and disposed of. I always recommend a qualified contractor for remediation if needed.
i found some "chalky" white subsatnce on the pipes at my sons school, they inspected it said it wasnt asbestos.... what could it be, i so glad i was mistaken... but now im curious what it was.
So is it the tile or yhe black glue that has asbestos?
This is how non mentally challenged individuals remove asbestos if anyone is curious: ua-cam.com/video/5f7medwuIMA/v-deo.html
Great post , replace before it goes out ........in my house for 25 years , no problem with pump but I replaced it in year 25 .
Thanks!!
I really dislike dealing with those outlets. Although we don't have them here in Japan, so I only have to deal with them stateside. Japanese outlets tend to be either 2 plug sockets, or they will have a slot to plug in ground wires, and the power cable will have a green ground coming out of the 2 plug with a flat crescent moon shaped end bit of you need that. I don't believe I've seen the triple plug outlets except for appliances. Or at least here in Tokyo, Kyoto and western Japan are on a different power setup, so they might have different outlets too.
What happens if those pipes need to be replaced in the future?
Good info for a common project. Thanks for this
I will give you a SUBSCRIBE and check out some of your older videos. You gave a lot of good advice in those two minutes. Thanks.

What do you do if there is mold (not black mold) on the asbestos tile. Can you Bleach it before encapsulating it? Also can you seal the tile with something? Tile is in my kitchen and mold is on tiles near sink and dishwasher area. Thanks for your help.
There is a product call RMR86 which is a peroxide-based solution. I would recommend cleaning with that Problem is if you have mold on the surface there is a chance you may have mold under the tiles as well. So if you simply clean the top surface then you may be leaving the mold and it may come back on the surface and become a greater issue. You may be best service by having the asbestos tiles removed especially if they have been flooded. I would recommend talking with a qualified contractor to determine what the best approach is. If removal is needed I would strongly recommend paying a professional to do the removal. Hope this helps.
@@inspectordaggett Thank you. I didn't think about underneath the tile. So I am going to call some companies to remove the tiles. Fingers crossed they will do it since it's a small job. Thanks for taking the time to reply!!
Wonderful thank you for doing the hard work for us! I brought in a ripe and juicy pineapple into the kitchen forgetting to cut it for a few days that’s led to a disaster of fruit flies.
Glad it was helpful. And yes they can get out of control in a hurry!
I live in a house with asbestos. It is covered up by tile but there are some holes in the grout. my grandparents have lived in it for 40 ish years and have zero health problems and I've lived in it since I was 1(19 now) I plan on taking it out when the house is fully mine.
Sounds like a fun project! Just be careful. Always mask up, wear gloves and a disposable suit. And remember they used asbestos in damn near everything back then. Even grout can have it. Any flooring glued down can have it. Drywall can have it. HVAC tape, shingles, the heat shield above the furnace, insulation.....it's actually a long list. So anything at all where you are possibly making dust or getting fibers airborne, just think twice and do lots of research. Some of the jobs you can safely DIY, but some of them you absolutely cannot. And depending on where you live, it may be illegal to do it yourself even if you follow safety procedures. Good luck to you!
yeah, its totally fine as long it isn't breaking up. be safe when you take on the project, use an air filter, seal the area off from the rest of the house and wear the proper n100 mask and suit. clean up everything well with a good hepa vacuum and wash every down when you are done. good luck!
i jumped out of my seat when he snapped that tile, lol
Are asbesto tile always that brittle?
When new they were not as brittle but as they get older they are usually pretty brittle and will fracture easily. Most asbestos tiles by this point are going to be prone to cracking.
Best to have it removed professionally.
On the left side of the mask you didnt have particle filter p3 on. only the right side . The coal filter for vapour isnt for asbestos
Exactly, and that's just an N95 pre-filter on one side, not even a P100
