Tacoma Truck Camping Gear Essentials
I decided to do a truck camper tour of the gear I am currently using when I go on a road trip. This footage was from my last trip on Hwy 395, spring 2023. I open up the bins and show how I keep things organized while exploring. Some of the items in this video I don’t typically bring but I have been trying new pieces out to see what works and what doesn’t work. The dog bed was a fail so I think I’ll be reconfiguring my wood build to accommodate for my pup. Hopefully that will come soon. Hope this video helps and if you have any questions about the items or any recommendations, feel free to comment. Cheers

Solo Truck Camping Hwy 395: Alabama Hills + OHV
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
Decided to hit the Eastern Sierras for a 3 day trip visiting Alabama Hills, some OHV roads off of Mofat Ranch Rd, and Benton. Still working on the rig setup and figuring out what works and things that need to be changed. I know that a platform for the pup will be one of the next projects as well as finishing the carpet/insulation on the roof. Tried to go up Whitney Portal but still a road closu...
Tacoma Topo Toppers Camper Build Pt. 2
Переглядів 10 тис.Рік тому
I decided to add insulation to the interior walls on my Topo Toppers Badlander. I believe that it is where majority of the heat is lost during the winter months. I used 1 inch EPS insulation board and 11/32 home siding. I went with wood so I could eventually mount future projects to the siding. After a good amount of research on how to adhere both these materials I went with Loctite PL 375. It ...

In this video I take you on a walk through tour of Topo Topper's Badlander Pop Up camper on a Toyota Tacoma. I go over some of the options and features Topo Toppers offers as well as what I chose to purchase on my topper. I also discuss how the camper has held up in different types of weather. I have owned this topper for roughly 8 months putting over 30 nights inside the camper. Watch this vid...
Alaskan Chainsaw Mill: Learning To Make Slabs
Переглядів 592Рік тому
From start to finish process on how to make slabs out of a log. This project is for a sign I'm going to make out of a slab using a cypress log. The finished product was not as clean as I was expecting but still usable wood. In the video I am using a Husqvarna 394xp and the 48in Granberg Alaskan Mill. Watch this video for some tips and tricks I've learned over the past few times using this mill....
Angels Landing Chain Section Only: POV Up and Down
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
Recently took a trip out to Zion National Park and did the Angels Landing Hike. They now have started a lottery system which there are three time slots for each day. They also have NPS personnel along the trail to check for permits. You can still access the trail all the way up to the chain section without a permit and I hear if you continue the trail past the chain section the views are just a...

Lake Tahoe: Maggies Peak, Sand Harbor + Truck Camping
Переглядів 1652 роки тому
Took a 2 day trip out to Lake Tahoe where we hiked Maggies Peak. We paddle boarded Sand Harbor area with Kellie (our dog) for the first time. The paddle was from Chimney to Secrets Cove. This is on the east shore where you will get incredible views. Go early for parking and to avoid the afternoon winds. I also show the Topo Topper and how it is popped up. So far we love it. Cheers
2 Minutes in Partington Cove, Big Sur

Sunset tour of Partington Cove in Big Sur. This short out and back hike takes down to a beautiful creek which leads to a secluded cove. You'll encounter bridges, tunnels, wild flowers, trees, and more as you explore this remote area. Unfortunately no dogs are allowed. Cheers!

Yosemite National Park 2022 + Firefall
Переглядів 3502 роки тому
Took a trip out to Yosemite National Park during the week in hopes to see the firefall. With little water flow it wasn't as visible but it was still beautiful to see and take in some majestic views. I was escorted through the park by my friend Finn who showed me some amazing sights. This trip took place February 14th-17th, 2022. I hope you all either got to see the firefall yourself or at least...

Stihl MS660 Magnum vs 038 Magnum: Test run on some pine #amateurhour
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
Decided to compare my Stihl 066 vs 038 today on some old growth pine that was recently taken down here on the Monterey Coast. The 066 is running a 36 inch bar and a full skip chain because I've been using it to mill lately. I forgot to put the dogs back on my 038 so was having more trouble than I needed to be with the cuts. Still learning. Anytips and suggestions with cutting is appreciated. Ho...

Paradise Road: Los Padres National Forest
This POV video is very helpful intel for my Angels Landing hike tomorrow, thank you!
Really appreciate your honest feedback on this camper. Thanks 😊
Please stop the music when you talking thank you❤
The leaks are not good. How it did in the wind seems perfectly acceptable. 30 to 40 mph wind is a pretty good wind.
Thanks so much. I just picked up my Bandlander this week and can't wai to do some of your options.
A tether and a harness. Same with the half dome.
@joshandjace
Amazing hike! I was there at scouts look out only and wish I could have seen what u both have. Thank you for video the whole thing and I feel like I’m there the whole time too. Scary but look awesome at the same time
Thanks for this review!
You are best than common ability man.
Not impressed! 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for showing how the Badlander did in the wind. I can live with the noise. My friend has a AT habitat and worries about it collapsing In The wind. This doesn’t seem like it will do that.
Really need to fix the sound
What speed were you going?
I would not suggest any tourist to take this road with a rental car...
Thoughts on a solid ladder for going up to bed? My in laws are 70 and would love to travel on trails with us but don't like climbing into a cramped roof top tent. I wondered if getting a nice pop up topper would work.
Knocked it out three years ago and I can tell you it truly is America's ultimate test hike! Fourteen deaths since 2010.
This is hard to even watch... there's no way I could make that height without having a heart attack!
Does anyone know when the chains were installed, who installed them, and what is the history of this hike before they were put in?
Yikes, this is a great vid and definitely helped me lean towards the Tune M1. Thank you!
Nice Taco, I have one just like it! What size tires you running?
just did this last month and the coming down part was way scarier than going up for me. But i loved every second of it
Agree! Just did the hike today and coming down was quite tough!
Leaks from the side windows is a no go! I've owned a flippac and FWC. The flippac leaked and it sucked. The FWC was great but heavy for a Tacoma. This camper seemed promising but if it leaks at the windows that is unacceptable.
Kill that background music thanks. Because your presentation is great but that music is too distracting.
Hey thanks for the advice! I’m planning on trying the “no music” style for my next video.. just waiting for to be healed from an injury and it’ll be posted shortly after. Interested to see how it goes with no music. Take care
Awesome build!! This is very inspiring - They do make a NON EXPANDING foam FWIW next time!
Hey thanks for the comment! I didn’t know that existed so I appreciate the heads up. Next time I’ll come more prepared haha
Great vid bro… keep it up man! Planning on putting our order in on a topper this month. Kyle in Montana!
Hey Kyle, thanks for the comment and encouragement, I appreciate it. If you make it down to Ventura to pick up your camper let me know and I’ll throw you some recommendations on things to do there. Born and raised. Take care
@@budchap I absolutely will. Thank you! I
Curious why you don't sleep in the upper deck?
Hi, What's the hight clearance of the camper?
SUPER NICE BUILD...
I thought the roof was the floor of the tent. Shit.
Thanks for a great video Bud. I am ordering a Badlander in a few days. The new Badlander comes with 4 windows on the tent now. Do you think 2 is enough or would you prefer the 4 windows. Do you get enough ventilation with the 2 windows in hot weather?
I bet your so pumped! I would have preferred 4 just for the views. 2 is enough for vent though. I also don’t do as much camping during the summer months as I would like due to work so I haven’t had it out in super hot weather. Mainly winter/spring months unfortunately. Hope you enjoy your camper
Thanks for the reply Bud. I will keep you informed. It’s a hard decision for me to make about the windows. What made you go with the full popup instead of the wedge camper?
@Jack-lr9cv yea please do. And I know it’s more expensive but I have used the access windows countless times because it’s much easier to grab gear that is towards the cab or midspan in the truck bed if it’s fully packed. Sometimes I’m in a rush to either get out camping, in between campgrounds, or going back home and don’t systematically pack. Then realizing something I need is all the way in the back (towards the cab). I went with the full camper because I’ve always wanted a cab over camper and this was the closest thing to it.. when put the panels on top of the cab portion and have the camper popped, I can literally walk around in the back and it makes it much more comfortable if you have more than yourself. I have a little family now so the wedge would have been a little too tight for me. Especially if the weather keeps us indoors, I wanted the extra room. Hope this helps
Are you able to park your Tacoma with the camper in a normal house garage?
I have yet to try that out but once I’m at home I’ll test it out and let you know!
Great! Thanks
Why don't you sleep in the camper bed?
I only sleep up top if I have my family. Sometimes I’ll sleep with the tent popped and other times I won’t. Just figuring out what I enjoy best. And as of right now I more often don’t pop it up at all. Hope this helps
How difficult to install and remove? Excellent video BTW.
I have yet to remove it.. it’s been on full time for over a year. I’ve seen products that help assist you remove it and put it back on. Hope this helps
how much did you get?
I wonder who we're the brave souls who installed those chains with nothing to hold onto while up there....
it's wider than a sidewalk
Great videos. Really enjoy the work on the topo and set up inside. Appreciate the content.
Thanks for checking in! Appreciate the comment. Working on a rebuild of my drawer system so stay tuned! Cheers
What made you choose this model over the Mesa? and is there room to stand towards the back when the bed is in place?
Hey Jim, so at the time the mesa wasnt offered by Topo toppers, just the badlander. Mesa seems like a smoother setup up but I really enjoy all of the space on the inside when the bed is removed. When the bed is in place there is still room for standing.. I would say roughly two feet between the end of the bed and the end of the camper near the tailgate. Cheers
Thankyou for the review. Do you happen to know what the opened strut length is?
I don’t but I can measure them for you
@@budchap that would be fantastic
what is the cost
At the time it was 8500 base. Not sure what they are running these days. Hope this helps
Bed Stiffiners lol what are those 500 a piece lol the bed of the truck is bolted to the frame
Not sure on exact price but yeah not cheap. I can look up the invoice if your interested
great, honest review! The leaks would be a deal breaker for me. Have you tried buhtl tape on the outside of the topper? Can you put a roof rack on it?
Hey thanks for the comment. No I haven’t tried that. Would you recommend that tape? And yeah I got the L tracks up top which will allow me to put some roof racks up there.. haven’t decided if I want a basket style of just some Thule racks.
@@budchap yeah buhtl tape what rvers use to fill in gaps where leveling caulk won’t work I’d look into it May or may not be right for your situation.
My guy, I appreciate you and this review; thanks for telling it like it is.
Hey no problem! Glad it could help
Air or vacuum leak
Awesome!! Thanks for the info. What would you recommend?
Thanks for the heads up on the leaks and the noise!
Turn off the disco music!
Thanks for the honest review. i think I will try and save up for a alu cap then a tent down the road
My 038 av is my favorite saw
They are amazing saws. I have another one that is not running but hopefully one day I will restore it! Happy cutting!
Looking into these campers and have been cross shopping a few brands. This one appears to be a bit nicer than GFC. How have you been liking it so far?
So far I love it. Have run into a few problems but I figure the perks outweigh the issues that I’ve encountered. It’s light enough that can keep on my truck full time. But if you plan on camping in it an extended amount of time it’s just a platform for you to build around. So additional money and time if your able to build things yourself. But I like the blank slate platform. You can customize as you please.. or just simply use as a camper shell with a bed up top. Hope this helps
Not paying upwards of $10k+ for leaks.
