Managing Media Interview Requests & Building Journalist Relationships
Imagine this: you’ve just received an interview request from a journalist who wants to feature you or your organization in a story.
But there’s a catch-your calendar is packed.
Turning down this kind of opportunity can feel like a missed chance for valuable, free exposure.
The good news? You don’t have to miss out.
Here’s how you can still make that interview happen without reshuffling your entire day.
Here’s a list of tips you can forward to your team now:
✨ Reply ASAP
When a request comes in, quick acknowledgment goes a long way. A prompt response shows your interest and keeps the relationship strong, even if the timing isn’t perfect.
✨ Propose Options
Offer a few alternatives or suggest another time that works better for you. You’d be surprised-journalists are often flexible if they know you’re committed to the story.
✨ Suggest a Colleague
If rescheduling isn’t possible, consider offering another knowledgeable team member who can add value to the conversation. You still get the visibility, and they get their story.
Building media relationships is about showing reliability and keeping that door open for the future. Each conversation you make time for builds trust, credibility, and future opportunities. Even with a packed calendar, you can make those requests work to your advantage.

How do I speak with you one on one? I need your assistance

It's Meathead syndrome.
I've decided to get into podcasting recently so I am doing many 10 minute recordings, off the cuff, to just practice my speaking and catch my flaws before I try to really put together episodes. I appreciate the video and subscribed! I notice in my case, likely because I'm speaking completely off the cuff, that there are certain fillers that are an issue more due to repetition. Too many times saying "See the thing is", "You know", "Look guys", "This is what I'm saying". I'm sure your response is, well duh, don't freestyle a deep thought podcast haha. I want to be very loose and natural sounding. Would you suggest scripting my shows, likely 15 minutes per episode is all, then reading it till it is mostly memorized and then having it out for reference to glance at? I do not want to be fully scripted but I also have a lot of issues I can tell with filler words and 2-3 second dead air gaps, which cause more fillers as you rush to begin a new thought. Does going unscripted with just a few bullet points become a skill one can master over time? Thanks for reading this, it is a long post, sorry lol!
I'm annoyed at the new customer service filler words: "today," "at all," and maybe the problem is pleonasm as "next please," became "I'll help who's next in line please," and "thank you" became "have a nice rest of your day." But thanks for the advice, it will help me with the starting out sentences with, so. I'm in Wisconsin, pretty common here.
Hi, Rohan. I noticed that in Minnesota too. I worked in the twin cities starting in 2003, and before that, I hadn't heard sentences starting with "so." It's hard not to absorb it when everyone around you speaks like that. I believe that we all have this subconscious need to belong - so we sometimes take on speaking habits and accents when we move somewhere new.
Excellent video, thank you.
Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate that. You've got this!
I don’t think you need to spend so much time telling people who have an anxiety problem why their shaky voice is going to hold them back. They already realize this is not ideal and that’s why they’re looking at your video. You spend over two minutes speaking in very dramatic terms and it made me anxious just listening to you.
Agree.
Um even though i know the words in my head !?!?
Hi! I don't understand your question. I want to be helpful. If you can clarify, I will answer. Thanks!

Great tips - I found that the ones making the greatest impact are audio, lighting, the angle of the camera to one's face and looking into the lens when speaking. Brilliant explanation.

Hi Kathrine, Thank you for the info, vey helpful. I want to mirro-flip powerpoint slides with this tool ua-cam.com/video/wknjNwuNLkY/v-deo.html for my iPad and immediate use in a teleprompter to lead me while speaking, would this option lead my speech to more natural and make my presentation conversational in front of the camera?
Just include bullet points. Try not to script yourself out completely.
@@JanicekPerformanceGroup Thank you for a quick responds, Yes I will use bullet points plan..did you ever experience working with powerpoint in a Teleprompter before, if yes , which tool you used to mirror-flip your slides and does it force you to read word for word? ,thanks in advance.
@@syriesanica5988 Hi! It's best to have a confidence monitor with the slides so you can see the current and next slide. Smart to read the words on screen but to have very limited words on the slide. When the audience hears it said and reads it -- it enforces greater ability to remember the message. Use the bar test when it comes to writing the words on screen.
@@JanicekPerformanceGroup Thank you for a go-ahead opportunity.
Very good tips. Thanks. I do think your background is cluttered and distracting, which is what you advise against. Otherwise, you practise what you preach.
Thank you! You're absolutely right, as you know. Stripped it down.
WoW this was awesome.
Thanks!
Do a video on split-screen, so the first party can view themselves (to make corrections) if needed.

Funny how you're giving tips for better video conference calls yet your video itself is a trash! What camera were you using here? I'm telling you don't use it again. Ever! All the qualifications you mentioned do not reflect/show on this video. Lol. You sound like a great scammer!
Unfair and inaccurate in my opinion. While Katherine's webcam could be better, she does display good skills.
@@samifaltas Thank you, Sami. I shot this really quickly when the pandemic first started to help more people. I was definitely not happy with the quality - but I wanted my message out there quickly. Got a logitech external web cam right away. Needed it immediately as all my clients moved to online.

I agree. Great guidelines. The background is a bit distracting, though.
Thank you. You're right. I transitioned to a new camera as soon as I released this video. Tried to move quickly to help people - but it definitely wasn't perfect. Had the office professionally lit too by our director.
