Merle Travis actually is the person credited with writing it. Ernie Ford just covered it. 1. Covers were actually the norm for most singers back in the day. It wasn’t until The Beatles that artists were expected to write their own material. So no shade at all to Ernie, this version is the best. 2.It was a mining song, just like slave hymns, no one will probably ever know who actually wrote this song. It was sung in a mine by people who owed their soul to the company store.
