At our dojo (and almost all others I've been to) this would be called sumi otoshi. However, I was at Framingham Aikikai last week and this was demonstrated as tai otoshi. Halprin Sensei has been training/teaching for decades and traveled the world with Kanai Sensei, so he can call it "ham sandwich" for all I care, i.e., he's the expert, not me

Pity the sound is so bad. Yamada usually gives very clear instructions, but this time we can’t hear him.

The camcorder was on the second floor balcony and there was a lot of background noise. So yeah, the sound quality isn't great.

@@phillyaikidogal Still a useful video, though. The demonstration is clear.

For Gods Sake, woman, next time sit in front when you make a video! We only can see the upperpart and hardly the leg works!

To be fair, sometimes you have to work with what you get when you are shooting video AND training at the same time. If you really want to see what is going on with the footwork, I taught the same technique at a seminar 11 years later. Not as impeccable as Barbara Sensei, but she approved: ua-cam.com/video/pde1BpNdp0E/v-deo.htmlsi=Xjr_jW3SkyfWIVUp

All of this was about one year and a half after my stroke. (Shihan Henry Smith died April 2013) You can easily see how weak my body was. (Read "The Art Of Peace full.m4v" and you can see me working with Shihan Smith, Shihan Johnson and all of the senseis' at Aikkido Philadelphia five year earlier.) This Sunday I will show how aikido/qigong made me a lot better. Believe...and work.

Shihan Henry Smith taught these tai sabaki exercises well be he also did two or thre more. Ayumi ashi tenshin, ayumi-ashi tenshin and kosa ashi. This is what we did again Sunday January 17, 2016. (The first time after my aphasia.)

Technically its an nikkyo, in principal and movement its ikkyo all the way. If you watch more of his videos you'll notice he's creative at blurring techniques togther. It really doesn't matter what you call it.

"Gyaku Sankyo" is not Sankyo since the lock is in the Kotegaeshi direction. It is a Kotegaeshi since the beginning.

I studied Aikido at an Aiki Kai dojo in Philadelphia, back in the 80's. There was a guy named Brendand with a shaved head WAY back then. Is this the same guy. Our Sensei was Henry Smith of NY and Later Donovan Waite (also of NY) The building was handled by a guy named Doug.
