S4E2 Webinar: “Motivation and Method: a standout year for racecourse engagement“
The expert panel discussed the innovative approach of racecourses nationwide to create positive impact in their communities. The panel is hosted by the Racecourse Association’s Matthew Jones with racecourse representatives contributing to the discussion.
Panellists formed part of the recent Racecourse Association Showcase & Awards judging process competing in the sought-after Community Award category, won by Go Racing in Yorkshire. Join us at Racing Together Industry Day to hear from General Manager Charlotte Russell to hear more about their Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
This episode discussed the motivation behind these initiatives, why they were created and how they came to life in partnership with charities and the local community.

I do find it crazy that racing isn’t more forward. How many other industries within reason allow flexible working or at least try to build in some flexibility regarding childcare school run et cetera. Even if it’s a case of families ensuring that somebody can pick up and take kids to school even if they’re not their own. I remember as a small child being put in the car with the other neighbours children driven to the local infant school. That was normal and it still is normal for many children. Beat children who they live in your street or are related to you. Or 10 the same childminders. What is the stop racing stables from getting together and organising to pick up Jordan from school and dropping them after care or even in a town by Newmarket crashes and after-school clubs being funded jointly by Buy individual trainers and the big operations in town. Which would then free up a lot more people into the workforce. As well as increasing the potential to retain people with it in the industry. And what’s the worst case scenario if somebody’s doing evening stables and they have the children running around the yard. These are thoroughbreds not lions. They are well handled well cared for awhile some might be a bit nippy the reality is those individuals are identified and can be confined or kept away from the children appropriately. It doesn’t do the horses any harm to get a bit of TLC from those children either especially those who end up going onto second careers outside of racing. Just as racing with pride has been pushing for more LGBT plus inclusion we need to ensure the industry is more family friendly for its workforce all going forward it will face the same problems as every other industry which has crown powers and poor pay.
