Shadows Grove Homestead
United States
Приєднався 27 тра 2020
This is a channel dedicated to our adventures of creating our little homestead! I am very excited to bring you along on our journey. My name is Chelle or also mother, and nature lover and nurturer. I have spent my entire life working with animals and plants and trying my best to be a part of nature... but there was always 1 BIG problem!!! My husband is active duty Air Force... and that means CHAOS! We have moved a lot and we have lived in amazing places and terrible places. We were blessed enough to move to Washington state in October 2019 and my husband bought us our DREAM home to lay down our roots. Plenty of land and space and a nice house. He has his work shop and I have my beautiful nature and a craft room. So, welcome to Shadows Grove!

One of the most difficult parts about doing a sizeable full-coverage needlework project (like a HAED) is how large the fabric is. Now I use ribbons and roll my excess fabric and then implement custom-made grime guard covers to not only protect the proje...

If they don't get relief..could they become egg bound?
I have never found any correlation between the 2 very different and unrelated conditions. However... egg binding can happen to any chicken and a weaker health state can of course increase the chances of egg binding... but as a cause, no Ascites does not cause egg binding. If they do not get relief... they die.
Arent stantin antibiotics used when an anti fungal is needed?
Thank you. This is amazing and I will certainly be using it.
God. Job. Ladies ❤❤😂😂
Has anyone tried leaving the needle in for constant drainage?
Great question, yes I do know other have and I also did... it was far too slow. The best option I have found is to leave the needle in and remove the syringe and keep emptying ti and putting it back on the end of thr syring, I prefer luer lock syringes.
Absolutely love it!! A total game changer
Thank you so much for posting this. I have to do this myself and this is a massive help
This is a brilliant system. I will definitely be implementing this soon. I'm terrified of using hair clips because I also don't want tears in my fabric.
I am glad it helps. I have never had good things happen with hair clips. They tend to ruin fabric and I have seen a few people end up with a hole in a full-coverage piece after so much work.
TY - going to surprise my wife. Sams club has on sale right now. Your review compared to others seems very sincere and honest
How far did you insert the needle? Thank you!
Nystatin is not an antibiotic. It's an anti-fungal medication. In my opinion, it looked like you took too much fluid out, which could result in hypovolemic shock. Now, I'll admit, I've. never done this in chickens, so not 100% on that; it's why I'm researching other's experiences and knowledge, as I'm once again owning chickens. Most of my previous experience, medically speaking, was with people or parrots (small to very large). I would've guessed 60-to perhaps 120 cc would've been adequate & advisable per session to take of the fluid (and as a nurse, we pronounced it "ah-sigh'-tees" (a- like in "at" or a- like in "a-ha", -ci- like the word "sigh", and -tes like in "tees" or "t-shirt".)) But it was just my guess as to the fluid quantity. I'd be curious to the outcome. She seems like a young chocken, for this to happen to her. Yes, I know farm people often re-use implements, and excuse it as them just being a chicken, & dirty animals, etc, and have seen another open do this on a video. But, if possible, I'd definitely change out to new clean needles between sessions, & clean her skin with alcohol or povidone (pov-id-doan, like -Joan or Jones) keeping in mind that Povidone or Betadine, whether scrub or solution is drying to the skin, and can cause issues of it's own, that way... Anyway, at the area you plan on puncturing the skin with a needle washing the syringe between uses or animals is suggested, with hot soapy water (suggest Dawn, because sometimes body fluids are a little bit greasy!), rinse thoroughly, then disinfect, either by heat (such as boiling, or with a heat-based baby bottle sterilizer), or using a diluted properly Quat solution, or bleach & water diluted 1 part Chlorox disinfecting bleach to 10 parts water. Soapy water or any organic residue or matter (waste, food, poop, body fluids, etc) can negate the disinfecting properties of the Chlorox bleach solution. Leave on 20-30 mins then dry between uses if possible, or to store for next use. And yes, when absolutely necessary, I have washed, disinfected, & re-used needles with farm animals. Is it recommended? No. But sometimes, ya gotta make do. The reason is a) it might not get cleaned well enough, or something might be contagious. b) the needle's tip might become blunted during use, or over uses; it might get a "burr" on the needle tip, that snags or drags against the skin going in or coming out, causing a bit of trauma to the area. Over time the needle becomes duller and duller. It wasn't that many years before I went to nursing school 40 years ago, that nurses re-sharpened needles for re-use!
Thanks for all of your feedback.. I am aware that nystatin is an antifungal, if I misspoke I apologize (I am too busy to check at the moment) and I do not feel the need to fight about it. I have done this before and do know what I am doing and have a lot of experience with animal medical care in both a professional setting and here at home with my own animals. I do know that I did not take too much fluid off of her and I also do know that she was quite thankful that I did so. She was not at any risk of being in shock. There is indeed a risk if too much is removed, but it is important you understand how much is causing your chicken distress to begin with. Since you have never done this before on a chicken, I am not sure why you would feel the need to criticize or try to correct someone who has not only done it... but has also done it countless times with success in ALL procedures? I also am a parrot owner, small and large and have never once had to do this with my parrots, however, if I had to, I an confident in my ability to do so... these are however not the same as parrots by any stretch of the imagination aside from the fact that they are both birds with wings. I am not sure why you even want to critique my pronunciation of the name "ascites"... but fine whatever... tomatoes and all. I have worked with many veterinarians for both large and small animals and both in hospitals and farms... I can assure you that every single individual animal is different when it comes to what they need, how much fluid they need removed and so on. Go with what you feel is best if you do not like the information I provided. As far as the outcome, I am sure you noticed this video was from 3 years ago and no she was not young. She was a 5 year old hen and she passed away about 6 months ago at the age of 7 years old. I am not so sure how you could wager a guess on the age of my chicken by looking at them lol, but no, not young in the least. She battled this condition for quite sometime before she passed away and she lived a great life. She went through this process roughly every 3-4 months until the end in which she would get it about once a month until the last few weeks when we knew it was worsening beyond our ability to help her. I also NEVER reuse needles EVER on any animal. I will use the same needle during the time in which I am working on them AT that time... but never again and I am not sure if you are accusing me of this or not??? But, if you are, no, this is not something we do. We use a new needle and syringe each and every single time. So, we do not need to bleach syringes in this house, as they go in the trash. Her skin as well as any other animal on my property or under my care is always cleaned with iodine or betadine before anything is done and alcohol is used. I am not sure why you think you have any need to comment on that either... I cannot understand why you felt the need to criticize and being a bit offensive in your comment to me. If you do not like how I do things, then by all means ... do not listen to me. I do however find it insulting and just wrong to assume I do things that I am not doing... some of which is just ridiculously unsafe or stupid. I mean, you even tried to insinuate that I am saying it wrong... which I would not care about if you did not spend every other word judging me and accusing me of things. I do wish you the best of luck though. Perhaps you should just call a vet anytime something is needed at your house. As for myself, I will utilize all of the medical training I have received on all of my animals with the oversight of my family veterinarian. Have a blessed day ~ Awen
BEST Video on Draining I have seen yet- great positioning and information given- Can't thank you enough- we're about to have to do this to one of our hens!
I am so glad I could help you with your chicken. I hope all is going well.
We have a Lavender Orpington with the same issue, I think. We took her to the vet though, and the vet didn't see water on the X-ray. Any advice?
Did the vet check the chicken for heart failure or check the crop for soup crop resulting in the crop being full of liquid or substance that will not go down?
I used 22g
Thank you for this video. I've been caring for a chick for days and wasn't sure if she was blind. I have no idea what I'm doing but googled enough to start her on yolk and vitamins and sugar water and then mash with yolk. She's just started pecking at the food today instead of needing syringe feeding. How often do you feed and do you wake in the night to feed?
I will heed babies every few hours, even in the middle of the night... that way they won't get weak from low blood sugar.
@@ShadowsGrove Do you remember if Pip ended up eating on her own? I'm getting so tired from all the feeds through the night
@@Jadevansanten Pip did end up eventually eating on her own. I also give my special needs babies the enfamil baby vitamins, the purple packaging.(not the one with iron). Give 1 drop twice a day. I also had another blind baby born a year after this one, she was lucky... Tillies sisters took her under their wing right away and started teaching her the way. They would tap so she could hear and usher her along. She lives like a normal chicken in a smaller coops of hens.
@@ShadowsGrove Thank you! I'm giving her currently water with raw honey, nutri drench vitamin drops, rescue remedy. Chick started with water to make a mash, raw yolk,. Im in Australia. That baby vitamin here is a probiotic in the purple packet, is that what you mean?

Is she still alive?
She lived to be a nice old lady and passed away a few years after this video.
Thank you for sharing this thorough video. Following close to the same as what you did, I performed the same procedure on my hen, Goldie, a few weeks ago and she is doing so well. Her full appetite is back and she's jumping up on to the high roost again. What I did differently, only because I was so nervous, I drained a full syringe, pulled the syringe out and left the needle in to drain her slowly. I just held her very still with a towel over her and she did very well. I've been supplementing her feed with some dried red pepper flakes, adding artemisia annua, and oil of oregano into her water. Thanks again!
I am happy to hear Goldie is doing well again. I have found that as the cause worsens, so too will the ascites and you will have to drain again and how often truly depends on disease progression and how the chicken is doing in that regards, so do not be afraid or surprised if you find you need to do it again int he future or every few weeks eventually.
@@ShadowsGrove Thanks for your reply. I will keep a close eye on her and likely I'll become more comfortable draining her routinely, especially after seeing her bounce back so quickly. Thanks again!
Aren't chickens not supposed to eat nightshades often?(Peppers)
@@Mike-sy6oy Chickens can eat peppers despite being nightshades so long as they are not including the stem and flower parts that contain solanine. solanine Is what is toxic to them.
Thank you! I tried the hair clip, did not work for me. The ribbon works for me.
I am so glad it helps. This has been a tremendous game-changer for me. It makes like soooooo much easier and protects my fabric.
Thank You so much for this God Bless 🙏
Never use the same needle twice - you can introduce infectious material with the next needle stick.😪
Yes, always important.
How do you know it's not egg yolk peritonitis? The fluid looks very yellow. Did she survive?
Thank you for the question Brian, she did survive with the condition with this treatment plan for a few years until passing away of old age in her sleep. Egg yolk peritonitis is in fact very serious... but it also has a different set of symptoms. It is important that people make the best medical decisions they can for their animals with the knowledge they have and if they do not have the proper knowledge or experience in being able to do so... then it is vital a veterinarian is utilized. Yes, medical care for chickens is expensive and seen as useless to some and many refuse to take theirs to the vet and some will do anything for their chickens. I do not judge anyone. I personally work with veterinarians for all of my animals in my home and property no matter the species and do know that her condition was her heart and was in fact ascites. The fluid pulled can vary in color from a light yellow tinge to sometimes even looking like orange juice and this can be indicative of disease progression and severity. I do not recommend that just anyone should go grab needles and start sticking their pets. It is important people do ONLY what they are capable of, comfortable with and understand the risks.
Better to NOT SUCK it out. Remove the plunger and let it drain out on its own! But good job…
How did you give tfw nutridrench?
I often give a small amount in a syringe directly I'm the mouth and then add some to the water.
How do you get all those wrinkles out, especially when the Linen comes packaged with hard creases that won’t iron out?
Wash it
I actually stitch with the wrinkles and as I go they come out because of the tension of my q-snap. I do not wash until I am finished.
They have never come out for me when washed and ironed. The Qsnaps must be miracle workers then because the hard creases have been impossible for me to remove in the starched/folded Aida. Hence, I never use it. Too much work to chance that in my end result. That’s just my experience and tip, not necessarily everyone else’s.
@@cynthia8022 What kind of fabric are you using? Mine is relatively soft to begin with and thankfully not difficult to finish. I buy mine from a lady online called Tinge of Color.
It’s wonderful that you have such a caring brother to help you.
Thank you, yes I am very blessed indeed. He helps me with so much every single day.
I’m so glad I watched your video. I have one hen that has water belly. I’m going to drain her today. How was the update?
Very good. How is your chicken doing?
I have one that was born two days ago I suspect it’s blind. It doesn’t hold its eye open but when they are open I don’t think it sees very well. Can you give me some advice on how to raise a blind baby?
i am doing this right now :( she will live indoors with me like a king or queen now my little one was born with no eyes at all
I hope she is living like a queen
How is the little one? Its been some time since u posted this comment and I just got an eyeless king/queen.
Thanks so much for sharing. ❤️🙏❤️ A tip to prevent poking too far is to place a medical type tube as a sheath over the needle leaving a quarter inch or so exposed for insertion. Also mark the insertion point before you start with a pen so that if the needle slips out you can reinsert without making new holes. I've done this operation a few times by myself. I have a slightly different theory on ascites. I believe compromised linings are due mainly to Parasites including possible fly larva if the vent area is not kept clean. Adding 1.5%-2% powdered or finely chopped Artemesia annua (Sweet Annie) or Artemisia absintium to their feed eliminates most Parasites especially Eimeria responsible for coccidiosis. Do your research! You only need to do this every two or three days. (Use absintium initially as it's more potent but since it's considered slightly toxic switch to Sweet Annie after a couple of weeks.) iHerb has some good prices on bulk Artemesia.
Is there any way to drain fluid without a syringe
No, I am sorry, you need a needled syringe
@@ShadowsGrove ok thanks for your reply
Thanks for the video. Yesterday I did the intervention on my chicken. She is very active, eats well (sufficient amount) She does not show symptoms of pain or fatigue. But the only thing that has me very worried is that the fluid came out a little greenish. Anyway, thank you very much. I am from Valparaíso, Chile. I found out about this video from an article I saw online.. I have had to look for everything in English because there is not much information about this in Spanish. Greetings.
I am so glad to hear it helped. It is okay that it was green (not good to be in her, good to come out). Just never do too much. You heard about my video in an article? Can you share the link?
@@ShadowsGrove I'm sorry if my English has mistakes. I was reading a lot about the problem, I don't remember the link where I found the video if it had the corresponding thanks or credits, it would be good if you reviewed it. Apparently the liquid entered the hen's respiratory tract. I hear, sometimes, a breathing with a noise.... Anyway, I'm very grateful. Whatever has to happen, I will continue to accompany her with love and care..
We just got a blind chickie. So sad. I don’t think she will make it. I’m trying everything.
I am sorry I saw this too late
2 questions for you. A) How many packages of the Knox are you using? and B) if you add Hot Pepper into your mix, do you delete that amount of boiling water. Bad rodent issues. TY
I have the same breed same problem
It is not a breed problem... it tends to happen to all breeds.
Thank you for sharing, This was extremely helpful.
Thank you, it is my pleasure to share my knowledge.
I have a chick that hatched with one eye and crossed beak. The gab in her beak is huge . Do you think I should put her down?!
Hello, I do not think you should put her down without consulting many other people who raise crossbeaks. The one eye situation is okay, they do well with one eye and it is not uncommon in crossbeaks to be born with one eye or no eyes even. There are a few FB groups that exist that specialize in people raising crossbeaks and I have a friend who has one she hatched 7 years ago and she is still with her.
Well. I killed my chicken. I got out maybe 1/3 of an ounce and when I gave her a break she started gurgling and could not breathe and died a miserable death. She’s been swollen by fine for two months until just then.
I am so sorry to hear that happened. It sounds as though you punctured her lung... It would be hard to understand what happened as clearly I was not there, but that is what it sounds like to me. How terribly sad she and you had to go through this.
I don’t thinkj did. I used a tiny insulin needle sand syringe (all I had). I only injected lower ab by the leg. I think it’s be safe and had a lot of fluid in the crop and tract and she was on her side with her head lower this. Her body. She was fine until I sat her up and then she took in water. Also a lot of fluid leaked out of her mouth after she died. I should have had her more upright when I did it but had no help. This is my third chicken in a year this has happened too. All from same clutch from the breeder. They grew up together, all comets. I have one left from that clutch. It makes me so sad. I am getting sapphire Gem pullets tomorrow though. Still the guilt, Thank you 😞
Also it was green tinged. Like light olive oil.
I just tried this. Pulled about an oz out. Ill try more tomorrow. It was a lot easier than i thought. I am so in love with my girls. My heart aches tonighg 😢
Hang in there and she will too. Drain more as needed. I would start adding red pepper flakes to her food, and then also oregano tea to drink as well as not feeding her high sodium scraps.
This isn’t even my hen and I’m get all nervous and sick to my stomach just watching. …as if it were my hen. I know the relief they feel is worth it.
Awwww yea, emotionally it is hard. Even for me ... I have to go into a different mode because chicken mommy mode gets worried and anxious.

How many hens do you have like this?

I have heard not to remove to much at once or it can cause shock. I don’t know how much though? 🤷♀️
It is true, you can certainly put them into shock if this is not done right or if you drain too much. If I am being honest, I feel and use my hands ... I touch my hens all the time, especially any with an active medical issue. So, by feeling and touching Maizie, I can feel how much is in her abdomen and I also keep a keen eye on how she is handling things.

Some do tend to eat a ton and it loosk horrible... but then some do actually have issues with crop and or gizard impaction or sour crop. You want to ensure her crop is emptying properly.
@Shadow Groves Homestead, how do you know where to stick the needle please? I’m afraid I might poke or damage her internal organs as I was told they are too close with each other as chickens are small animals. And what size needle did you use? Thank you.
For some reason I did not get any notifications on comments for this period of time. As explained in the video you have a small area of opportunity to prevent mistakes, you have to ensure you stay in that area. If you are not comfortable doing the procedure, it is never shameful to ask someone for help. Look at the part of the video where I discuss it and I will show you.
Thank you for the video! We learned a lot watching this.. we just performed the procedure on one of our chickens and so far so good. Thank you again so much.
My pleasure, so glad to hear this.
Thanks for the video. I took a total of 12 oz. out of my chicken yesterday. She seemed a lot better, eating and walking around. Now today is not getting up and looks pretty bad. Any ideas?
I think you can remove too much fluid at once.
I am so sorry I did not see this. While it is possible you removed too much it is not likely... I have found that when removing fluid they do have an intial "ahhhhh" type response, because they immediately feel better. But the following day they are tired and need rest. I push the oregano tea/water and of course eggs and normal feed with red pepper flakes and usually wihtin 2 days she is back to herself.
