There is no evidence any god or God exists. Good and evil are labels we use to describe things we like and don’t like.
hmm. Interesting thought. However, I think most people use the differentiation good and bad for things we like and dislike. Evil cross culturally is reserved for something uniquely different. It most often is tied to some cosmic spiritual element.
@@wellhousechurch1081 Would drowning babies be an example of evil cross culturally?
My main issue with a non-omnipotent god is the problem of arbitrary limits. How limited is gods power, and why is gods power limited in that way? The person who believes god to be omnipotent can argue that a supreme Being such as god would have omnipotence due to having all perfections, and omnipotence is a perfection. Thoughts?
That's a pretty standard rebuttal to any limitation of God. But I would say that it breaks down at the end there - perfection. An all powerful and "perfect" God who has all power and perfect knowledge means that they would have not only known about coming atrocities, but also had the power to stop it. And that is quite problematic for lots of people.
@@wellhousechurch1081 yep. The problem goes both ways. On the one hand - a limited god has the problem of arbitrary limits, and on the other hand - a perfect god has the problem of evil existing at all. I think it comes down to which bullet you’re willing to bite. Back to the problem of arbitrary limits : if you can’t give a reason for why god is limited in the way they are, then what reason do you have for thinking god *is* limited in the way you think they are? Let’s look at an analogy to hopefully drive my point home : I am a human being. I have physical limitations on my body. Gravity limits my ability to jump. I could maybe jump about 3-4 feet in the air (given G (G=Gravity)). G is the reason I am limited in the way that I am, regarding how high I can jump. God, a *probably* non-physical being, wouldn’t have the limitations (namely G) that I, a physical being, would have. So god should be able to jump as high as possible (in theory). Now in relation to gods power, we don’t have a reason to think gods power is limited, but apparently gods power is limited. How do we make sense of that? I guess maybe if we think Jesus is god incarnate, and Jesus seemed limited in power, then we could say god is limited, but we both know Classical Trinitarians are gonna chime in with an obstinate rejection of the idea that god is limited. Plus, knowing god is limited isn’t the same as knowing *why* god is limited. Obviously in the case of Jesus we could say Jesus had human limitations so god had human limitations, but the Father and the Spirit don’t have those limitations since they never *became (I use this term loosely since trinitarian anthropology is complex af, and I’m trying to avoid any “heresies”)* human. But now we run into an issue within the trinity. God the Father and the Spirit are not limited in any way, but God the Son (Jesus) is limited. So god is limited and not limited. This isn’t an explicit contradiction, but it’s really close to being one. There are two moves you could make here to avoid potential contradiction (assuming you want to remain a classical trinitarian). The first move you could make is to say Jesus actually wasn’t limited in power. Jesus could’ve done anything the Father or the Spirit could do even as a human. The issue here though is that you run right back into one of the original issues: god has the power to stop evil, but doesn’t. The second move you could make is to suggest that the Father and the Spirit are limited in a similar if not identical way as Jesus was. The issue here is we run right back into the problem of arbitrary limits. Why are the members of the trinity limited in the way they are? Let’s take a look at another issue for the concept of a limited god. How do we arrive at the conclusion that a god, limited in power, exists? In natural theology, the arguments tend to conclude a perfect Being exists. Are there any arguments for the existence of a limited god in a similar fashion as there are arguments for a perfect Being?
Did God created murders? God created the potention for evil. Free choice....you decide to do evil.
We aren't talking about evil in one off acts. We are talking about the origin of evil or satan or whatever evil cosmic force is opposed to good.
Mr. Beard has an alarmingly small view of God if he expects God to conform to his wants. It's worse than "Mr. President, I need you to have Air Force One painted yellow."
Mr. Beard here! It's not about God conforming to my wants. It's trying to make sense of the same God in Jesus that is against violence and evil and that same God of the Old Testament commanding their people to commit violence and evil.
You can't CREATE evil. Evil is not a thing in itself, it's the absence or twisting of something else, which is good. You can't create darkness, it's just the absence of light. You can't create cold, it's just the absence heat. You can't create evil, it's the absence of good.
See I actually don't think that construct works. If someone chooses to murder someone that is in fact them creating evil or committing evil. Evil is not the absence of good. Evil is actions done with intent to harm by creating harm, suffering, absence, loss, etc.
@@wellhousechurch1081 What are those actions missing or twisting? GOOD.
Of course he created evil, he created the concept of reality and concious thought, the dark is there for contrast, so you know whats valuable and is not.
And its not problematic for you that God created evil in your construct?
@@wellhousechurch1081 No. Because to have a value system to differentiate between what is good and bad, both must exist. You wouldnt know what having a good day was like or even worth if you didnt have a bad one.
Too God everything is good
But what about God's knowledge? Surely even if God began as only knowing good certainly when evil was first committed in the world then God became conscious of evil. And now everything is certainly not good to God.
Evil to a God or evil to you? If God created all knowing all, then the act of having a good can only be If there is an evil. And evil is only what he deems is not good.
Ahh, yes. But see you have come with a presupposition that I don't have. I don't believe God created all knowing all. You can catch the full episode for all of the context on our channel!
God created the bullshit.
Ill ask you this then. What is “good” if there is no “evil”?
This is a great philosophical question. People have been asking it for centuries. There is no great answer since we always place the two in contrast to one another. But what I might say is humans are designed to notice the difference. Your body is designed to protect you from evil and it never protects you from goodness. So while it may be an intangible answer, there is clearly something different between the two.
@@wellhousechurch1081 thats true i guess my question was the answer to the first guys question where you said he doesn’t believe God created evil
Oh gotcha. Well, if you'd like to see his answer you can find the full episode on our channel!
Is that cocaine or a grey spot
Hahah. Grey Spot.
@@wellhousechurch1081 that's what they all say. 🧐

The problem of evil is one of my favorite problems to wrestle with, even as an agnostic. I think it can be “solved,” but it requires some bullets to be bitten in order to maintain such a solution. For example, I think the skeptical theist response adequately solves the problem of evil. We just can’t know why (or ascertain the reasons/motivations for why) god would permit evil in our world. However, I do think a major issue arises for the person who defends this. P1 : We can’t know why god would permit suffering in our world. P2 : If we can’t know why god would permit evil in our world, then we equally can’t know why god would permit good in our world. C : We can’t know why god permits good in our world. Furthermore, P1 : If we can’t know why god permits good or evil in our world, then we can’t know why god would create a world at all. P2 : We can’t know why god permits good or evil in our world. C : We can’t know why god would create a world at all. Even further, P1 : If we can’t know why god would create a world at all, then we can’t know that god created our world. P2 : We can’t know why god created a world at all. C : We can’t know god created our world. There’s obviously a lot that could be (and has been) said regarding the problem of evil. I’m curious. Have either of y’all have read the book “God’s Problem” by Bart Ehrman. He gives an interesting perspective on the biblical portraits of god and the various lines of thought on the POE.
Absolutely, the problem of evil could be talked about for days! I (Cullen) have read several of Ehrman's books and have an appreciation for his work. But that isn't one that I have read yet.
Funny how these arguments ALWAYS use Old Testament to refute what Christ & the New Testament tell Christians...Christ said he fulfilled the Old Testament..so that BS is a phony argument... Chris also said "Do not harm my litter ones"...something about wearing a "millstone around one's neck" as preferable.... So, take that 20 year old buying a 3 year old crap to Biden...Epstein...Jimy Kimmel, Jim Carrey...the Podesta Bros...Balenciaga infuencers & officionados...it don't fly here!

Like your format, pretty relaxed. The tale of Lot is pretty messed up, the only thing i can think of to justify his label as "righteous" would be to say, "righteous compared to people of his time."
That's certainly one way to do it! Glad you enjoyed the format! This is a pretty old episode. We publish a new one of these every week from whatever our weekly sermon was. You might enjoy some of those too! And thanks for engaging with us by the way :)
Excellent and critically important conversation!!!
Thanks Adam! We need to get someone from your team at FCAC on here to have another critically important conversation!!!!
THE FATAL ERROR No triune God exists. The bishops of the councils of Nicea and Costantinople - as the theologians before them - FAILED to realize that the Holy Spirit is NOT A "THIRD GOD-PERSON" but the FATHER IN FORM OF A SPIRIT ("God is a spirit"). Jesus calls Him sometimes "Father", sometimes "Spirit" (Holy). Due to this FATAL ERROR the INVENTION of a THIRD OMNIPOTENT GOD was formalized. This "NONEXISTENT third God-Spirit" (the "Lord who gives life") REALLY is A "GHOST" ! Of course he cannot be found in the bible, is IGNORED in the relationship between Father and Son (of course They CANNOT talk to him since he doesn't exist), of course he cannot be found in heaven, you can't PRAY to him...(Alternatively to the "Lord giver of life"???), the really existing Paraclete has also been proposed as the "Holy Spirit God-Person", but he is not either. THE HOLY SPIRIT INSIDE JESUS WHO HELPS HIM IS NOT THE PARACLETE, HE IS THE FATHER-SPIRIT ("God is a spirit"), (see the gospels where He helps the Son). THE HOLY SPIRIT IS SIMPLY THE FATHER-SPIRIT. The Trinity theory also BRAZENLY CONTRADICTS other key points CLEARLY disclosed by the gospels. Indeed the theory says that the three persons are equal in power, when Jesus states the opposite "my Father is greater than I", it says that Jesus is omnipotent, when He needs HELP to be led into the desert, it says that the three God-persons DO KNOW the future, when the gospels state the contrary "... or THE SON, but the FATHER ONLY knows.". The supporters of the trinity theory simply DO NOT CARE (!!) and are taught to smile and use offending "fantasy arguments" to overturn some crystal clear statements of the gospels. The trinity theory is worth absolutely nothing, THE EVIDENCE IS THAT IT NEEDS TO BE STRENUOSLY PROTECTED AS A DOGMA. Without that protection it would IMMEDIATELY disappear! No trinity-mysteries exist! They are just the NONSENSICAL OUTCOME of a false theory. Jesus is the non-omnipotent God, the only KING OF HEAVEN.
I’ll bite. I generally understand Matthew 7:12 (“the Golden Rule”) as, to use Cullen’s words, more “existential” in nature. The umbrella is a little larger, then, than “don’t hit someone if you do not want to be hit,” but more broadly, “be kind to others, just like you want others to be kind to you.” It’s not so case-by-case. Jesus is his own best interpreter, though. That passage comes in the same “sermon” where we get “blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy,” “if you forgive others their debts, your Father in heaven will forgive your debts,” “and judge not, lest you too be judged.” The really interesting thing about the Golden Rule is that it may have less to do with doing unto others as we hope others will do to us, and instead doing unto others as we pray God will do unto us. The Golden Rule should be a part of any Christian ethic/behavior. It is in Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, which is essentially the New Testament’s manifesto on Christlike ethics. If we are going to do #doJesusthings, that should probably involve the things he literally told us to do. Good podcast! Thanks for the thought provoking question!

Good podcast guys! On y’all’s point(s) about the Canaanite conquest and the perceived discrepancies between that and the character of God according to the narrative: What do y’all do with the plagues against Egypt in the Exodus? The Exodus is one of, if not the, paradigmatic narrative in the canon, and an integral part of that narrative is God’s judgement against a pagan nation (that culminates in the death of Egyptian firstborns) for the sake of his purposes. I guess the same question could also apply to the Babylonian exile (another paradigmatic event).
Sorry for the late reply on this Andrew. You are correct that the Exodus would be a paradigmatic narrative in and throughout the canon. I think the difference for me (Cullen) would be that there were 9 previous attempts that were not lethal in the plagues. Now obviously, you do have to do something with that "God hardened Pharaoh's heart" section in this. But that would be the difference in my mind is that God attempted 9 times prior to inciting violence and death for the Exodus, whereas in the Canaanite Conquest Narratives violence and death seem to be the starting place.

Good podcast guys! One thing that would perhaps be worth unpacking is the nature of biblical “authority.” I take the article in the Chicago Statement on the grave danger in denying biblical inerrancy to, by implication, be an article on the nature of biblical authority: that to deny inerrancy, infallibility, invincibility, invisibility (and so forth) is to release oneself from the full authority of Scripture. I don’t know what the shape of this series looks like for y’all, but it would be helpful, in my opinion, to devote some time to how someone who rejects biblical inerrancy understands biblical authority.
That is a great point! We do briefly talk about authority scattered throughout, but we will also be ending the series with an episode on Biblical Authority! So stay tuned! ;)
Prayed in bars and other places. When the Lord leads you to someone to pray for or just pray silently then you do it no matter when or where.

Interesting thing about mentioning John Crist in this conversation is that he himself as managed to come back from “cancel culture.” Granted, his “cancellation” was for gross sexual misconduct (www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/11/07/entertainment/john-crist-sexual-misconduct-trnd/index.html), not for some of the much pettier reasons that other high profile folks get “cancelled.” Cosby raises an interesting question, too, about the degree to which people’s contribution to society is invalidated by whatever got them “cancelled.”
Yea, it's not an easy conversation to have because there are so many moving parts and each situation is unique. For Crist, it was as much about his alcoholism as it was for his sexual misconduct (or else he wouldn't have gone to rehab). But even still, to your point, his ability to come back from being "canceled" has been a unique element of him that I wouldn't have expected. I would say that it may be a product of timing. Quarantine, covid, TikTok, etc., made it a pristine time for someone to get noticed online and he had a number of different platforms with existing content that made it "binge-worthy." So I am not as convinced that he recovered in that he was able to regain those who canceled him, but he didn't lose his career as some have because he was canceled. Dr. Cosby is the really interesting case here. Hard to decide that all of his good for the African American community and civil rights movement is null and void because of his sexual misconduct. Now, on the other hand, hard to justify in any situation the abuse of more than 60 women for any amount of good. Hence, the reason for the series! LOL. But, glad that you are enjoying it/questioning some of it none the less.
