    Great video. I started about 1.5 years ago with a four roses yellow label. Almost a year in, I fell victim to the allocation hype and spent a ton on harder to find bottles, and usually being disappointed once I tried them. Now that my selection has passed 40 bottles, I’m finding that I don’t visit stores as often, and when I do, I will pass on things that I would’ve never thought about leaving 5 months ago. I’m to to the point now that private selects of standard shelf options seem to be the most interesting since they bring new light to some already stellar options without inflating the price to ridiculous levels like what happens with allocated products

    I only buy whiskey as an investment. I actually do not drink. I buy three to four bottles a year. I buy only MacCallan. The 12 ,18,25 year old Cherry oak of that year. I normally can't swing the 30 year old financially . That's really it. I have a couple other MacCallan randoms but that's it. I am sure if I did drink I would have a lot more to taste.

    This really hit home . Great topics. I too have spreadsheets of the bottles and fill levels, vintages, tasting notes etc. One tip is to decant to a smaller bottle when you open something really good. That way it’s saved and you dont feel bad drinking it. If you love it , buy two. This year I’ve purchased the fewest bottles I’ve ever bought (4) since starting my “hobby”. I’m in Florida and the bars mainly have bourbon and a crap selection of single malt scotches. For me FOMO is real. But even worse is fear of not being able to get that bottle that you prize ever again (discontinued /price). So many of these bottles sit in the dark. Now I just had my 25th anniversary. Did I celebrate with any bottle? No. Mainly because my wife doesn’t drink. I had my 50th BD. Didn’t open any bottles. I’m saddened to realize this . Like you say so many “special” bottles and none are THE bottle. I had way more fun in my early yrs of collecting. I have @100 SM bottles. And then there’s the blends , bourbons and rums. My wife can’t imagine why I still buy bottles and don’t drink them. I actually do. But I open cheaper ones. Of course I’ve had good bottles over the years but I’m reluctant to open one unless I have a “back up”. I think this kind of thing isn’t talked about by other reviewers. I find it fascinating that we all have one issue or another when it comes to our , yea excessive collections. Thanks guys for the video.

    Some Weller special reserve that I have had has what people describe as an earthy note. It’s almost reminiscent of a mildew type flavor. Some batches are more prevalent than others with this note. There are certain batches that it’s barely there and these are the ones that get peoples attention.

    When I first started collecting, I would purchase things experienced drinkers recommended. I have realized now I do not like proof, and so I might take their advice on a brand however, I always go down below 100 proof. So I would say to new collectors know your happy proof point.

      Good point. I do think online reviewers obsess about cask strength. Yes it is a unique way to enjoy and have more control of the abv and even get the most out of a bottle. But you need to develop the skill to do this or you’re wasting your money to a certain degree. Some offerings are great at CS. I however prefer @46 abv tbh. I will add that a positive of CS is they keep for a much longer time opened with out losing much of the profile. I’ve also found out I prefer my sherried scotches to not be at cask strength. I enjoy those at much lower abvs as opposed to peated scotches which I like more at higher proof.

    You're not wrong at all. A little cynical but but not qrong. I've got a decent collection of Scotch and ECBP and local NY 100% rye and American Single malt etc. My buting has dropped off in 2024 to 10% of what it was in 2019 and 2020. When yhey aniunced the tarrifs on Scotch I was a little worried. Today I continue to check out 2 or three web shops to see what's new and i take the drive to hunt when i have 2 hours to kill. If i get lucky yo find something new at MSRP great, if i find a store pick that's interesting, great. But i dont care anymore. Its just whisky and if my kids find the collection valuable when I'm dead, great. They could drink it or auction it off. My problem is that with so many bottles open i rarely find the need to open a new score. And if I do the chances of being disappointed are 50/50. It's never quite as good as the hype and its worth more sealed. The only solution is to buy 2. Its an interesting hobby and i got into it simply to learnabout the market. Why are there 250 different bottles of whisky at the store amd one is $25.00 and one is $25000? WTF? Thansk to whiskeytube I now know .

If you haven’t ventured into peat, give Tamdhu, Glendronach, or Glenmorangie a try. If you’re peat-curious, Johnny Walker Green label is a great start and if you’re game that’s when your Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbegs come in.

    I got into Whiskey about six or seven months ago. I get what you’re saying about not drinking an entire bottle so you can compare later. The problem I have with it is that I’m living in an apartment in Japan. That limits my collection size to maybe 40 bottles max. So I can’t really do that but I can have ten or so bottles open at any one time so that’s kind of where I have to go with it. Getting a new bottle means an old one has to go

    @4:50 "If you like Speyside or Highland scotch you will probably like Irish whisky" Nope. I've tried multiple Irish including the "popular" Red Breast 12 and just don't like it. And I love the Speyside profile in particuler (which is a type of Highland by the way). I would say Irish is more like Japanese whisky, especially since some Japanese used to source from Ireland back in the day.

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 Місяць тому

      Red breast is single pot still. Meaning it has unmalted and malted barley. Very different from single malt Scotch. Try some single malt Irish (Whistler) and it will be more similar to Scotch

    • @whiskeyuncut
      @whiskeyuncut Місяць тому

      A lot of japanese whisky is sourced from Scotland and re-labeled, and they learned whisky making in scotland so it makes sense they emulate the style. Thankfully Japan has some new regulation in that regard, so hopefully we will start to see a lot of progress in that area for consumer transparency. Redbreast has a pretty distinct heavier character. If you haven't tried Yellow Spot or Green Spot I would check them out. They are what James was referring to in 'similar' to highland in style as far as flavor profiles go. But obviously they are different styles for a reason. Their mashbills are different, and their distillation process is different. Taste is subjective and just because many people who like one style find the other appealing doesn't mean it will be true for you. Cheers!

      🤔. Very early on, my first peated scotch was the worst for many. Laphroaig quarter cask. I most definitely thought it was weird. Then I found myself craving the flavor afterwards. I believe it’s because I am particularly fond of the burning wood smoke smell. That and BBQ smell always remind me of vacations and relaxing times. Especially if the weather is cool. I feel the simple fact this is that it sounds like you have access to a lot of top shelf bourbon when in some areas we don’t for my example I live in Kansas City Kansas and bourbon is not controlled by the state so people that sell it at liquor stores can put the price whatever they want so from a person looking from the outside and you can find it for that price at 35 $ dollars when a lot of people can’t

    • @whiskeyuncut

      I have never seen ER on sale in our area for less than $80, although I have seen it on sale at $35 in Georgia which is what it should cost. There is lots of good top shelf bourbon available that isn't allocated but no we don't have any access to anything besides random lotteries or paying outrageous secondary prices at liquor stores which neither of us can afford to do. Trying to find accessible top shelf bourbons that aren't allocated is really more satisfying because then we can actually give people recommendations that are useful

    I really don't understand your take on Bruichladdich being a small distillery. You can find their whisky just about anywhere, and the fact that they use different terroirs of barley would speak to them being a larger distillery in my mind. Most distilleries don't bother differentiating Scottish barley from Islay or Bere barley. Also, what do you think about the J. Henry Four Grain Rye? How does it stand up to the cask strength bourbon? Would you just buy both?

    • @whiskeyuncut
      @whiskeyuncut 6 місяців тому

      I'm pretty sure I said "for a big brand, they have a small distillery perspective" not that they were a small distillery. They are middle of the pack in terms of size. They produce 1/10 the product that Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and Macallan make, but they also make a lot more than say Edradour which is a truly tiny distillery. I wouldn't describe Bruichladdich as a small distillery though. Other distilleries don't differentiate bc they just use batched barley, much of which is coming from outside Scotland as well. If other producers were using pure Scottish or Islay Barley you better believe they would advertise it but they don't. It's about company culture and some distilleries operate with passion, some operate as a pure bean counting exercise . I'll have to ask James about the J. Henry Rye, since I have not tried that one!

    • @Vortex1988
      @Vortex1988 6 місяців тому

      @@whiskeyuncutYeah, I would agree that it feels like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and Macallan have kind of phoned it in over the years. They know what they are, and they know people will buy their stuff just because of the name alone, and that just kind of lends itself to a lack of experimentation. They're kind of the Budweiser and Miller of the scotch world. And yes, Edradour is definitely a smaller distillery, although they do put out some really good whisky. I've tried most of Bruichladdich's stuff, like the Classic Laddie, Port Charlotte 2011 Islay Barley, and Octomore 8.4 and 11.3, and all of it has been great. The only whiskey of theirs I've tried that I was kind of on the fence about was a Bruichladdich Islay Barley (I think it was a single cask) that a friend of mine brought over. It struck me as kind of watery and a little lacking in flavor, which is strange for a Bruichladdich whisky, but maybe it was just that cask. It does make me wonder how much variation there is between the different types of barley because I really rather would have been drinking the Classic Laddie instead of that single cask.

Due to an INCREDIBLY stupid Kentucky law, the distillery itself (Buffalo Trace) can't sell product directly to consumers, as in KY you can't be a producer and a distributor at the same time. So they have to *sell* their product to a 3rd party, just to sell it at their own distillery. Stupid. Anyways... finding Eagle Rare these days for less than $50 in Kentucky is nigh impossible. But, at the MSRP of $30, I think it's really quite good. Fun fact : Eagle Rare is aged in the same rickhouse (Warehouse 'H') as the Pappy van Winkle line.

    Apologies for the audio delay and other weird technical glitches with the zooms. This is our first real livestream attempt, but we'll get it right 🤞🤞

    In VA, Eagle Rare is a $42 allocated bottle. At this price its a fair pick up. Nothing amazing, but its an easy pick up for the causual or lay person.

    Catching up on older episodes. Nice review and comparison. Those are the 4 Weller bottles I have. I rank them Full Proof first, then Antique 107, 12 Year and Special Reserve for my palette.

    New subscriber. The 4 Weller bottles you show are the 4 that I have been able to find at MSRP. My favorite is the Full Proof. 🥃

    Idk, I find ECBP to be way more complex than Stagg Jr. Sure, there's going to be some batch variation, but I've always thought Stagg Jr was pretty one note. You get some grape and maybe a little cinnamon and that's about it. It packs a punch and the flavors that are there are pretty concentrated, but I just don't find it to be very complex. Then again, I've only had batch 14 of Stagg Jr thus far, but I've found that most of the time, I'd rather have either ECBP, a Four Roses Barrel Pick, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, or a Russell's pick. If I want a grape bomb, then I'll go for Stagg Jr, but if I want complexity, then I'll go for just about anything else.

      With both these being single barrels there can be a good variety. I think James and I both skew away from really oaky bourbons which ECBP tends to be. But yes we both strongly prefer 4R, Rare Breed and Kentucky Spirit to either of these.

    It’s sourced from MGP. It’s their exact mash bill. Regardless of the different heirloom variety of rye. Yes it’s good but so are all MGP mash bills. Redemption Bulleit and many others use their mash and just relabel it.

    • @whiskeyuncut
      @whiskeyuncut Рік тому

      This is not sourced from MGP. Bottled in Bond whiskies cannot be sourced, this is distilled at New Riff. New Riff sourced the heirloom Rye from local farmer Charles Fogg and is the only distillery using that varietal of Rye currently.

      @umami0247 Рік тому

      @@whiskeyuncut it is sourced from MGP. It’s just their bonded rye. The only whiskey made by new riff is their bourbon. The rye still comes from MGP. It even list this in their statement for the different mash bills. Yes MGP has bonded mash bills that they source to other distillers.

    • @whiskeyuncut
      @whiskeyuncut Рік тому

      @@umami0247 Their rye is NOT sourced. It say Kentucky Straight right on the label, distilled by New Riff Distillery, not MGP. Their standard rye does not come from MGP and neither does Balboa Rye. They borrowed the 95/5 mashbill from MGP but chnaged it to use malted rye. Using a mashbill is not in any way linked to sourcing a product.

      Two Souls is fantastic. The company just started last year, and James flies around the country to craft distilleries buying unique barrels. They ship all over the US if you visit their website: twosoulsspirits.com/
