    Hello, I watched and liked. Still I have a question, please. I want to reenact taking a photo with a collodium wet plate in the nature. No building in the area. Did a photographer in 1882 had to take a little tent with him in order to apply the chemical on the glass before taking the photo, and would he use the same tent or cover as a darkroom to fixate the picture? How can he get light in that tent without electricity? I read about a red glass window.. Thank you for a reply. Also link to see such a field use dark room on old photos.. or reenacted.

    • @JohnMillekerPhotography
      @JohnMillekerPhotography 2 роки тому

      Hello Nick, photographers would either have wagons or tents to apply their chemistry to plates. Light would be from red glass (Collodion is Orthochromatic, doesn't see reds) or a lamp with a red chimney or front glass. You can see some examples of setups by going to the United States Library of Congress page and searching for tintype photography. There are a handful of examples of photographer wagons and tents.

      @@JohnMillekerPhotography Hello! I very much appreciate your detailed reply to my questions. I will check the LoC webpage. Also I found in the meantime a couple samples of portable darkrooms. There were models looking similar to a wooden suitcase when folded. The textile cover which was deployed after this box was opened was dark colored outside and yellow inside. On an original still existing.A tripod was commun to mount the box on top of it. I noticed flat glas or porcelain tanks in a size slightly larger than the photo glass plates. To apply the silver solution by sinking the glasplate into this recipient with a spoon made of similar materials. I thank you also for mentioning the possibility to illuminate the inside of the darkroom with a lamp, as long as the glaschimney was made of red tinted glas. If this was a petrol lamp the hot air had to be evacuated in some way. The red glass window mounted into the wooden front pannel of a portable dark room is visible on several photos online. Now I must build such a darkroom and do the reenactment with everything involved to produce a photograph in a tropical forest.

    Like you said the important part is nobody was killed or badly hurt after that. It could have been much more tragic and thankfully it wasn't. Like you mentioned in the podcast, maybe time to lean on the side of caution a little more with approaching storms and pull the tent down earlier to protect the valuables especially the electronics. Just know we supporters will continue to support you and Christine because we believe in what you are doing and offering to the historic community.

    You guys will be able to fix that tent. I don't know about the rain fly cause I didn't see it but we lost a number of tents & poles, 2 tables smashed - one totally gone - don't know where it is, metal bent to the point where it is trash. We are hoping my kindle, Ry's computer and a Samsung tablet will be able to be fixed. I lost some of my medication so a trip to the doctor to try to explain that is now called for this week. Thankfully we found a bunch of our personal items 400 yards away in the tree line. I think the house saved your tent since it blocked some of the airflow of the wind. I know the Union troops took the full blow of the EF1 tornado - as we are now being told. Thankfully life is what was spared during the storm. Everyone is alive and well. The historic structures are saved and we will continue to teach history to the public. I'm thankful that our group is all safe, well and will be ready to teach again in a few weeks. Glad your equipment wasn't ruined! Onward & upward!

    So you poured potassium cyanide into a tray with bare hands, no protection, and then rinsed the residue onto the ground? What were you thinking? KCN is highly poisonous. You can die from exposure to it.

    • @JohnMillekerPhotography
      @JohnMillekerPhotography 2 роки тому

      Thanks for your concern! There's also Cadmium, Silver Nitrate, Ether and more. Most Wet Plate photographers won't use gloves because the process is so tactile. It's not that we're careless, *most* of us study and consult chemistry professionals on the proper use, neutralization and learn the MSDS chemical sheets. Full strength Cyanide IS highly toxic, as is full strength Cyanide and exposure to a strong acid. The Cyanide here, a 2% solution is too large of a molecule to absorb into the skin, similar with Silver Nitrate. The Cyanide goes back into the bottle and the plate is rinsed with water, that waste water is may have a thousandths of a percent of the chemical. We always neutralize the old fixer and properly dispose of it. Chemists have told me that rose bushes like the full strength spent Cyanide, but I'll stick with my current hazmat disposal techniques. Can we not use Cyanide? Sure. But strangely enough, Cyanide is better for the environment as it requires much less water. Other alternatives take up to an hour of constant rinsing and doesn't decompose as quickly.

    • @fbraakman
      @fbraakman 2 роки тому

      @@JohnMillekerPhotography Thanks for your reply. Mostly you were very careless handling the cyanide. The minimum requirement would be rubber gloves to handle the cyanide. Containment of spills is never a bad thing. Maybe check the MSDS for KCN.

    The D850 is a piece of shit. Nikon also like to claim everything is the users fault, be it their defective AF system, bad sensors. Hell they often claim 'impact damage' when the camera was never dropped by the purchaser, or anyone else using it(they are just admitting their cameras are flimsy that even holding will break the weak internal structure).

    • @johnmillekerjr

      That's a good question that I really don't have an answer to. I believe it was about 200ml of solution. We pre-washed the shirt and coated it in a bucket while damp. I feel that the shirt being damp helps it soak in better. In the future though, I intend to try a spray bottle of the chemistry on a damp shirt to see if it uses less chemistry.

  • @rypRSR
    @rypRSR 2 роки тому

    I am sorry to hear you had a problem with Nikon Services. That being said it is good to hear other people's experiences. Earlier this year I sent my D810 and 105mm lens in for repair and experienced no hiccups whatsoever. The reason for my repair is I forgot to zip the side of my camera backpack and the camera w lens attached fell right out - luckily on my carpet. That being said, the flange holding onto the lens was definitely no longer flush with the body. In other words my lens was dangling. The body of the lens had a crack near the lens mount towards the focusing ring. It took possibly a week and a half, which exceeded all my expectations - so much so I was telling my Nikon friends they should have their cameras maintained by Nikon Services as I was extremely pleased by the outcome of my repair. Again, that is a bummer it took nine weeks for Nikon to correctly complete a job. I hope my experience is an indication not all Nikon Services jobs are a shit show. Simultaneously your experience is a look into if things go wrong, how bad it can be. I work as a licensed optician at Costco and we deal with a great amount of orders for prescription glasses. I have to say the mass majority of orders are done correctly - exactly to the patients' prescriptions and there are at times an order isn't done correctly. Some how our lab's final inspection lost focus (not a pun) and gave the OK to be shipped to our location. After inspecting the glasses myself in the department I must send the glasses back for to the lab for remade to meet the standard of the prescription. What would have been an extra day had the lab caught the mistake in the first place, now the patient's glasses are delayed even further because of an error they did not catch. I am trying to make a parallel with my experiences of Nikon Services and Costco's Optical department. I hope the experience with your D850 from Nikon Services is akin to the rare times Costco's Optical lab drops the ball - it happens from time to time and it sucks being the recipient who pays money for a service gone awry and is not an indication of all the jobs done.

    UA-cam notifications said I had a comment, but when I came to the video it was nowhere to be seen even though it's still in my notifications. This isn't the first time this has happened. There was a time stamp of 0:34 with a language I don't speak. It may have been a question as the 0:34 mark was where a Hydrogen Peroxide was added. Typically a Cyanotype will 'dry down' on it's own and darken, but when we're still performing exposure time tests, it can give us a quick idea of what that dry down will look like.
