The Mississippi River
A geologist leads the viewer through the humble origins of the Mississippi River in Minnesota, the enormous wanderings (meanders) of the river in the central U.S., on down to the expansive (but sinking!) delta of the Mississippi in Louisiana. Will the Mississippi change course and abandon Baton Rouge and New Orleans? The lock and dam system (with an excellent animation) is explained. Watch for the flock of friendly mallards a few minutes into the video!

My grandpa's house was at the foot of the hill shown at 0:36, he always had tons of stories from the war even though he was a young teen at the time. Stories of german and allied soldiers, destruction and poverty. The completely obliterated town forced many to emigrate, like my grandpa to France. Incredibly interesting to know how the geology and morphology of the area shaped one of Italy's heaviest battles. Cassino sitting in that damned valley creates an incredibly adverse climate, which I always hated every time I visited my family. It's great to stitch all these pieces together, thanks for this very informational short!

Some Hawaiian names for lava are Pāhoehoe and ʻAʻā but the most common by far is AAAHHHHHH!

I've actually been to where he is walking on the rock. Pretty sure it's in New Mexico, there's a specific area where mountains open up into a vast desert.

Very sad to see the scientist say that another 79 is impossible. This is simply untrue.

Giovanni didn't say that a plinian eruption like 79 A.D. was impossible. He just indicated that trends point to the next eruption be subplinian, meaning less explosive/smaller than the 79 A.D. eruption. No guarantees either way, of course.

There's a funny back story to the segment where I'm standing in the Mississippi next to the ducks. I stood in the river for about an hour, waiting for visitors to the park to thin because we were filming from a bridge, which shook when people walked across it (and they were talking so that would have been picked up by the audio). Finally, some astute and kind individuals saw what was going on and offered to help with "traffic control", shushing people and keeping them from crossing the bridge while I was doing the segment. So we ended up filming this segment with about 15 folks standing on the bridge watching. Fortunately, I had plenty of time to practice my lines while I waited! --Jerry

That's amazing. I'm pleased to have been able to recount these events. As I think I said in the video, I was there on a nice, warm, summer day, but the battle was fought in the winter. It felt amazing and humbling to walk those grounds.
