Great floods on the Mississippi River
Geologist Jerry Magloughlin shows what it means for a river like the Mississippi to flood, including the effects on a river's channel and flood plain, and explains the concepts of a 100-year and 500-year flood. He describes the catastrophic 1927 flooding of the Mississippi, along with the serious 1993 and 2008 floods of the Mississippi. You'll see what flooding and floodwaters look like up close.

Will the Mississippi change course and abandon Baton Rouge and New Orleans? The lock and dam system (with an excellent animation) is explained. Watch for ...

Geology and warfare: The WWII battle of Monte Cassino, Italy
Переглядів 24 тис.7 років тому
A geologist explores the role that the geology played in an important WWII at Cassino, Italy, through visits to the battlefields, geology, monastery, and cemeteries. The volcanism, sediments, travertine, rivers, and other factors all played a role in the fight by the allies against the entrenched German army attempting to defend Hitler's Gustav Line. The costly battle to break the line at Cassi...

Exploring Landscapes 🪨 🔍 🤔 studying rocks 🤘😮 at historical sites.
Had to go back and watch this one again, still a great video
Always love seeing Jerry making a new upload. It's always a quality watch.
It is great to see your name pop up in my subscription feed with a new video to watch. Thanks.
Pleasant calm music, historical footage, quiet yet confident narration. Love your documentaries!
Excellent!!
Before Hamburger Hill, there was the battle of Monte Cassino. How many time the monastery base on the mountaneous Monte Casino got a ton of bombs/napalm'ed dropped on it and how many time the Allies struggled to went up and got pushed back down before they finally secured it, 4 month later¿?! That was pretty similar to how US struggled in Hill 937. I'd say again, Monte Cassino isn't only the Italian version of Stalingrad but also Hamburger Hill on steroid and still make the actual battle of hamburger hill in vietnam looks like a holiday jungle trek
8:08 i knew lava went into the ocean like this, but i think this is the first time ive seen it disappear, first time ive seen a graphic of how it forms (solid rock on top of basically gravel/sand) awesome video.
WOW
My grandpa's house was at the foot of the hill shown at 0:36, he always had tons of stories from the war even though he was a young teen at the time. Stories of german and allied soldiers, destruction and poverty. The completely obliterated town forced many to emigrate, like my grandpa to France. Incredibly interesting to know how the geology and morphology of the area shaped one of Italy's heaviest battles. Cassino sitting in that damned valley creates an incredibly adverse climate, which I always hated every time I visited my family. It's great to stitch all these pieces together, thanks for this very informational short!
Some Hawaiian names for lava are Pāhoehoe and ʻAʻā but the most common by far is AAAHHHHHH!
Wonderful voice.
best
Great Work Jerry, well done indeed. Certainly best on UA-cam John 3:16
Thank you so much for this information. I learned alot.
I'm on Oahu
I guess after watching this, I will have to make Etna my 3rd Volcano to climb! Thanks
So cool! The combination of narration and imagery completely brings me somewhere else and fills me with the desire to experience more of the world!
50,000 years ago somebody's day got all messed up. That had to be a hell of a thing to have witnessed.
When I first saw the pic for this I thought whys the My Pillow guy getting ready to jump in a hole, lol?! It's an awesome documentary!!
The unknown been deep in the mud ain't nobody understands deep down in the mud
I love this video !
I've actually been to where he is walking on the rock. Pretty sure it's in New Mexico, there's a specific area where mountains open up into a vast desert.
I watched this for science class, thank
Very sad to see the scientist say that another 79 is impossible. This is simply untrue.
Giovanni didn't say that a plinian eruption like 79 A.D. was impossible. He just indicated that trends point to the next eruption be subplinian, meaning less explosive/smaller than the 79 A.D. eruption. No guarantees either way, of course.
An excellent presentation. Well done
Thank you for this upload.
These are some of the best educational videos I've ever seen
Puns!
Excellent video. Thank you. Looking forward to your next one.
Great video though!
How southerners say it: Aa chaaf a lay ah
There's a funny back story to the segment where I'm standing in the Mississippi next to the ducks. I stood in the river for about an hour, waiting for visitors to the park to thin because we were filming from a bridge, which shook when people walked across it (and they were talking so that would have been picked up by the audio). Finally, some astute and kind individuals saw what was going on and offered to help with "traffic control", shushing people and keeping them from crossing the bridge while I was doing the segment. So we ended up filming this segment with about 15 folks standing on the bridge watching. Fortunately, I had plenty of time to practice my lines while I waited! --Jerry
August 24, 79 A.D.* is what I learned, NOT October 24, 79 A.D.
I've missed your content. I hope you're planning on making more in the near future
🌋🧡
Very good. Needed to be longer because it is a genuinely educational programme, free of emotive vocal exaggeration and tricksy visual effects.
Here in 2021 to learn more about volcanoes as Fagradalsfjall in Iceland is erupting. Great video, thanks!
Great video
I love your channel!! 🥰
Good vid, Cheers from sci class Ima sub Shout out Mrs.Jordan my teacher
The amount of gold in that rock 😍 wish I could mine it
""""""""" Well done Jerry I feel I I myself walking on the lava rock along with you and Iam in Hawaii .. love from India.....,,,,,,,,,,,
My grandfather was in the 36th Texas division. My heart skipped a beat when you mentioned them by name. The stories he had, I wish he wrote a book. Thanks for the great video.
That's amazing. I'm pleased to have been able to recount these events. As I think I said in the video, I was there on a nice, warm, summer day, but the battle was fought in the winter. It felt amazing and humbling to walk those grounds.
You haven't posted in a while!
very nice video man!
so exciting to see a new video from you! posting this to convince the algorithm to spread it more :)
Very well done, good job.
Great video and narration. I always thought you could be a narrator for some geology program on Discovery or some channel like that.
Hi Jerry, this is John Koster. I’ve been subbed to you for years, glad to see a new video.
Hello John--great to hear from you. Send me an email sometime; I'd like to catch up.
