Rod on the Trail
United States
Приєднався 25 тра 2020
Hey! My name's Rose, but I sometimes go by Rodney or Rod depending on which friend you're talking to. In April 2023 I set out to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) - a 2655 mile wilderness trail from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. While on trail I was crowned Kodak because I carried my film camera with me.
Unfortunately, I did not complete the trail. This channel, however, was started to share my journey which includes the good the bad and the ugly.
Even though I was not successful in 2023, it is still my dream to complete the trail. Subscribe and watch my adventures from 2023 and beyond. I'm just getting started!

PCT 2023 - The Final Chapter
Переглядів 3105 місяців тому
Hey all - me again! I'm back with the final chapter. On April 19, 2023 I turned north from the Mexican border and started walking. This is the rest of that story one year from the start. After trail I struggled mentally more than I thought I would. At first putting these vlogs together and reliving the experience was fun for me. But when the shine wore off and life set in, a second, stronger wa...

PCT Day 39 & 40 - The Night We Hiked the LA Aqueduct
What camera are you using for this? The same you used for the PCT?
I’m using a different one! On the PCT I just used my phone, but I invested in a DJI Osmo 3 this year and have been trying to use that for most/all videos :)
Good to see your videos! As I recall your PCT trail name was Kodak, right? Are you still using that trail name?
Yes I was known as Kodak on the PCT! I still use it when I’m on trail but definitely shifting towards Rose/Rod again :)
I miss it so much. I still find it hard to watch stuff from trail.
😭 same friend but here’s to years and years of more adventures
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I started watching your journey due to a mutual friend we have (Mollie). And I really feel this. When I hiked in 2019, it was a constant battle of pain management beyond anything I could have imagined. Towards the end (7 months total) I was so done with hiking and told myself I never wanted to backpack again. It was beautiful and absolutely the best time of my life, but the pain you experience everyday is so blinding and makes it difficult to really appreciate the experience in the moment to its fullest. I remember being so jealous of those other hikers that just seemed to be able to pull 25-30's with what seemed like little to no issue. Now that I'm far enough removed from my hike, I tend to look back on it as all rainbows and sunshine, but I know that's my brain downplaying the struggle. However, I would absolutely do another thru-hike at this point - there's just nothing else like it and it's truly fulfilling. I hope you get the chance to return sooner rather than later!
I love Mollie so so so much 🥹 thank you for following along! Thru hiking is definitely the best and worst thing to ever happen to me. I think about it constantly to the point of obsession and the nostalgia is definitely clouding how much I hated being out there at times. But the freedom… nothing compares to it. I would absolutely do it all over again and I hope you get the chance to do one again too!
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. I've loved following along, and marveling at the beautiful scenery and the joy and humanity you shared on the trail. Looking forward to more from you if you ever feel inclined to share another journey with us. Thank you, and good luck.
Thank you so much for following along! I’m hoping to share more (and different) adventures from the east coast this summer
You are awesome. I've loved following your journey
Thank you for following along! I had so much fun sharing my journey
So happy to see this video! I followed your videos since before you started, with the gear videos, and enjoyed them all. And yes, yes, come back and do some of the PCT you didn’t get to last year!! Looking forward to it! Thanks SO much for your stories!
Thank you so much for all the support! I have BIG plans for when I return to the PCT. In the meantime thinking of some east coast hiking videos :)
Omg! My performance on trail if I ate like you, would have severely suffered! And my muscle mass would have disappeared! You must of felt like crap and exhausted every day!? Or you have no idea how much better your performance could have been if you actually ate nutrient dense foods!
I noticed you are carrying a camera and your phone. Did you use your camera much during the trip?
Typical trail food, I’ve stocked up on some of the better oatmeal’s and clif bars and protein bars that I can buy much cheaper in bulk at Costco and those will be distributed through certain points where good grocery access is an issue.
With all the food you ate on the trail, did you find that your weight dropped, stayed constant or increased at the end of your hike?
My weight didn’t really change all of trail. I gained a lot of muscle
You should get tested for all the deseases maltodextrin can give you since you ate maltodextrin for most the year.
Want to go nerdy? Knorr is a German company from Bielefeld (belongs to Unilever). If you want to brag with your language skills, simply pronounce the "K" before "norr". Voila. Although I hiked more than 6000 miles in 2022 I didn't eat one single Poptart, Ramen or Knorr. Some Europeans claim that Hershey's has some acid in it and apparently that makes it taste like vomit. I say BS, it's a question of hunger. I spent a lot of money in the US but there was no way I could afford Lindt chocolate or the stupid freeze dried meals. It is possible now to do the entire PCT without sending boxes - although in 2022, fresh out of the pandemic, a lot of stores looked like stores in East Germany in the cold war as they could not figure out how to resupply the stores.
There is no failure in this, you pushed yourself until you couldn’t anymore. There is far more pride in that than just saying “I don’t like the weather or I don’t like the trail”. You accomplished so much more than 99% of other people out there, especially under such physical adversity. Stay strong!
Thank you!
omg, this video is amazing, like everybody is like "my hyperlite backpack has some holes on the mesh pocket" and pretend like they are distressed perfectly, but you had to #myog your shoulder straps with duct tape. I applaud you for that, what an improvise-ation. Thanks for sharing! xx
You can actually remove the valve from your mat. They sell replacement valves you can slam on in case the valve itself breaks. For the sake of sustainability maybe wash it, dry it and so on.
Good to know! I’ll look up how to do it. The people at trail days gave no information about that (of course🙃)
This is so fucking cool
Right?? So random but so cool!
Your vlogs are great! Thank you
Thank you!! Glad you’re enjoying them and thank you for the support 😊
Proud of you Kodak ❤️ Ps. Piute pass was my favorite of all of them. Very gentle grade and surprisingly gorgeous!
Proud selfie queen💅
Omg cover girl is that you!!!????
Where did you camp at CL?
I can’t remember if it had a name, but according to the map I used it’s near lightning spring off the rim trail! Basically perpendicular to wizard island
Wildlife comes out at night 🐍
One of the many reasons I hated night hiking 😅
My wife and I watch several blogs each year. We shared your happiness when you got your permit and we were sad when your videos stopped halfway through. So happy to hear you continued hiking and thank you for being so open and honest about your trip and your feelings. Years ago I learned to cherish the journey when I had been overly focused on the achievement which you seemed to have learned. As my daughter would say you earned some flex and you need to be proud. Happy trails.
Thank you so much for your support through it all! Excited to keep sharing what I documented along the way. Definitely not the end of the story… just the start!

Thank you for taking us along for the journey, buddy! proud of you for making the decision to prioritize your mental and physical wellness 🤍 excited to see if/when you go back to finish (or whatever other fun new adventures you choose)
I love you <3
FWIW, section hiking is vastly underrated.
I'm a LASHer for life now I think 😅
That took awhile
Hikertown. A legendary place. Maybe they improved since 2022 but back then they just had a garden hose as a shower and guys were encouraged to do number 1 outside of the bathroom. There was a medical emergency, basically they brought somebody to hospital who didn't want to go but in the morning admitted that they could no longer get up. Out of fear from the heat, people started to walk the aqueduct at 2 in the morning. Everybody felt nervous but there was no reason to be. Maybe it was the wind.
I don’t think I ever explain it, but I didn’t end up staying at hiker town! It’s not necessarily my place to comment because I only heard second and third hand accounts, but there was a lot of drama surrounding the place when I was in the area. Only stopped by for about an hour to check in with friends before heading out to the aqueduct. Seemed like there were plenty of rooms available and showers. But other than that, I don’t know much about what they have!
Great story Rose! I can't even imagine the endurance of doing what you did...hearing your story is amazing. I am definitely just a day hiker with my wife! Welcome home! :)
Happy to be home!
You did amazing. I enjoyed your videos. I myself have every excuse not to even attempt the hike. You completed a large chunk of the trail with foot issues.
Thank you!!
I experienced women being way braver compared to men in such situations. Rest assured: You did 1000+ miles more than the majority would have done. It is not uncommon to be home within three days after plantar or shin splints kicks in. What I can recommend: Instead of just filling in the blanks, do the entire trail again as soon as you can afford it. Now you know what it is all about, you will feel like an expert from the start in Campo. You will be able to enjoy the entire trail and having a real good time. Hiking again through the same forests you have already seen once last year or the year before is fascinating.
I’ve definitely thought about doing the whole thing all over again, but we’ll see! I’ve got some time to figure it out
You did 1800 miles, hurt? You are a thru hiker, period, end of discussion. Well done!
Thank you that means so much 😊
You’re the best! -don from Lorain Ohio USA 🇺🇸
Kodak, I think there are many viewers who are happy to see today's video and know that you are recovering and doing well. I had been following many hikers' vlogs including yours. When your videos stopped coming, I remember hoping at that time that all was well, so today am glad to hear your report. I trust that your physical and mental recovery will be complete and as smooth as possible. It may be hard to believe sometimes, but one thing is definitely true: The universe is always right on time. So are you. I'd like to ask: Have you ever heard of the hiker called Marmalade? Your story and his story while quite different also share some similarities. You may not have finished a one-year "thru-hike," but you still can be a "completionist." The time frame is irrelevant. I have enjoyed your videos immensely and learned a lot from what you have shared. I look forward to more from you when the time is right. Thank you for letting us tag along.
Thank you so much for your continued support! I have not heard of Marmalade before
I’d never roast you! Awesome to see this journey you’re on. Never knew the PCT went by where Kirk fought the Gorn. #llap
Girl, you rock. Just make sure you're taking care of yourself. Keep trekking. 😀
Stay safe; keep at it!
Way to go Rose, fun to follow along in your adventures!
You're doing great! Love following along. How are your Lone Peak 6 holding out? I wear 4.5 and worry about durability of the 6's.
I ditched my lone peak 6s back in Julian! They were already falling apart after 77 miles and completely destroyed my feet. I’m wearing Topo Ultraadventure 3s now. Altra has unfortunately gone way down in quality and a lot of thru hikers are switching out of them. The 4.5s were the best though and I miss mine so much
Oh no. That's what I was worried about. Topo Ultraventure was my next choice. I appreciate the feedback! Keep hiking!!
Didn't John Muir say the wooden bridges are calling and I must go ... or something like that ... ??? Be safe; keep at it!
Looks like a good time Thanks for sharing
The universe is always right on time; so are you. Maybe two "wrong" turns in 48 hours is just a subconscious desire not to leave the Big Bear area ... ??? 🤔 Wherever your trail is leading you -- Be safe; keep at it!
Way to go Rose! You are doing great....really fun hearing you tell of your experience and showing the trail along the way. Hope you got your Burger! Keep it up :)
Gorgeous looking trail my friend. 👌👌
You’re going to love section K in Washington. Endless blowdowns
Glad you were safe. Be careful. Keep trekking. 😀
ROD-what happened? Where’d you go??? I’m missing new episodes? 🥺
I think you have what it takes to face the challenges of the PCT. Happy trails
What a great day and way to go churning out those miles and staying positive, thank you for sharing!
Love your trail name!!!
