Rick Foell demo of ToneWood Amp

It sounds amazing and clear
Bought a Tonewood Amp for 165.00 It did sound good, after 2 years it quit. I never dropped it or left it outside, took excellent care of it. Bought it new from Sweetwater, who me they have in house technicians. Called them and was told to send it to Tonewood with a 100 check, and after 1 hour they charged 120 dollars an hour. They will overcharge you for repairs, knowing most people won’t pay this, then they will resale it .
great song choices for demos
This needs millions of views
Altho cool, i am still not convinced to buy a tonewood amp yet. If I am at home, plugging into my acoustic amp is simple… and more feature rich. Not to mention louder. I think the tonewood amp is great for if you’re gonna travel and don’t want to lug an amp around. I just can’t bring myself to buy one right now. But I may down the road. Cause I do love gadgets. So who knows. 😂
That's crazy!
What guitar is that?
It’s an Epiphone EJ200
How are you recording this? running both tonewood amp and a separate mic to another amp? and how are you mixing sound
I am not using any mics or amps. I’m just using my cell phone to record the video. All the sound you’re hearing is from my “unplugged” acoustic guitar.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 it sounds amazing especially coming just from iphone? is the tonewood amp really that good?
You are awesome doing this and because of you I believe in the product and so I bought enough so I can have them for both guitars. One electric acoustic a horner and one non-electric Yamaha. So just keep on doing what you're doing helping us out and they'll be more products sold.
You are a awesome guitar player! Love the video thank you! 👍
Thank you! I appreciate that so much! 🙏🏻
Is there a way to play plugged in?
Yes, there is an input and output to run a 1/4 cable to an amp. I don’t use it because my amp and pedals have all the effects that I need. However, it may be good for someone who just runs it directly to a board, a clean amp setting or to a direct box then to the PA to get the effects and not want to hassle with carrying around effects pedals.
Can i still amplify this through my usual amp? My amp is great but has no effects so I figured if i could use this and my amp, i have both,
To be clear, at least the manufacturer claims it makes it louder. Not a lot, but the claim is that it can add 3-9db depending upon what effects you're using. I can't speak to whether or not it does, but at least one other person has told me that claim is accurate. Care to weigh in on that modest increase?
Well, overall I’d say it doesn’t actually “amplify” the sound that much louder. However, yes there are a couple of settings like the auto-wah and distortion settings that do give it a little bump up in db’s. But, to buy it with the thought that it’s a mini amplifier to increase the volume of your guitar would not be completely accurate. Thank you for pointing that out.
Did you have a mic setup in front of you please?
No, that was all the natural sound being picked up by my cell phone.
Hi. I have an accoustic guitar, body depth 2 1/4 inches deep. Not sure I could put the magnet inside and I presume it would be very difficult to remove it again(?) Can the Amp be attached to the guitar using strips of Blu-Tack, instead of the Magnet, please?
I’m not really sure if that would work or not. The magnets hold the unit tight against the back of the guitar so that the “round vibrating cup thing” (for lack of a better term) on the underside of the unit can send the different vibrating signals through the tone wood on the back of the guitar to get the different effects. That about the simplest way I can explain it.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 Thanks Rick. If you ever come-by any Blu-Tack, perhaps you could try it, please? My guitar is a 'SlimLine', so I doubt a magnet could be placed inside without difficulty. Cheers.
thank you
They have an option for the purely acoustic guitar. They include a sound hole pickup.
Great playing, good choice of songs…is that a Gibson J-200 and are you playing in Drop D tuning
Thank you! It is the Epiphone EJ-200 and I believe I have that one tuned 1/2 step down. I believe I did a drop D on Wanted: Dead or Alive and another tune.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 thank you
my left ear thanks you
Great demo! I grew up in the 80s so excellent song choices. Have you ever had the need to switch between effects during a song? If so how do you do it? TIA
Thanks! No, I don’t really use this unit to gig with. I use it more to sit on the back patio and strum and chill or whenever I don’t have access to or feel like plugging into my normal set up. It would be difficult to switch from one effect to another on the fly with this unit.
What was the song you played after the Bon Jovi song? You setup sounds beautiful btw.
Thank you! The song after Bon Jovi was a little piece from an instrumental song that I wrote many years ago.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 That was very nice. It's funny how our playing styles tend to morph over the years often starting at rock on the electric guitar and then for me moving to finger style picking on the acoustic. The song you wrote is exactly the type of music I look for these days when I want to learn something new.
ToneWoodAmp + Pickup BUNDLE for non-electric. Great video!
is that a true j-200 or an epiphone? no mistaking that j-200 sound!
That is an Epiphone EJ-200. But I’ve also got a Gibson J-200 Vintage Custom as well. They both play and sound awesome.
Does the output jack on the Tonewood send the effect or just a dry signal? Nice playing btw.
This was so great. When I heard about Tonewood, I kept thinking- I wonder what the reverb would sound like on “Is There Anybody Out There” or how the delay would sound for “Run Like Hell” (Another Brick in the Wall was close enough to get the idea). The one I still really want to hear is “Born on the Bayou” with that slower tremolo. I guess I’ll have to buy one and find out for myself!
WoW
Does it work with a passive pickup like a K&K?
i was told yes but you need to turn up the gain on the unit
Nice playing and Demo Rick. You were very sensitive and sympathetic to the unit itself being allowed to reveal. Nice one. Take good care out there. Rollo.
I love the fact that you played pink floyd stuff. That's pretty unique 👏👏
you make sound way better than the sounds that I think will be coming out of my guitar.
That's some pretty good pickin Rick what's your background where have you played before
Thank you! Been playing gigs in Casinos, Lounges and Pubs out in Vegas for the last 25 years, all different genres, bands, solos and duos. Before that I was building my chops up in Phoenix and LA bars.
I cant get mines to work properly. The unit is just screaming at me :(
If your acoustic electric guitar has a volume control, turn it down to about half the volume. You may be getting vibration feedback from too much gain.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 thank you so much for your advice. I will try this.
The absolute best demo of the tonewood amp. I looked at a dozen videos before I found yours. Thank you so much. I’m definitely getting one. They should give you the commission.
Wow! Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! That’s exactly why I made it. I had the same problem finding demo videos that showed how it can be applied with different styles of music. Thanks again!
Another great video on the tonewood amp. You really seem quite "attatched" to it. Many thanks. Very helpful. Mine is due for delivery tomorrow... I bought it mainly because of your first video on it.
Epiphanies or Gibson?
This one is an Epiphone EJ-200 but I also use it on my Gibson SJ 200 as well.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 thanks Rick , well you make it sound great brother! I’m looking at a campfire/couch guitar and had seen Yamaha trans acoustic. You now have me looking at that epi with a tone wood
I've seen a lot of Tonewood amp videos, and it bothered me that they all used so incredibly much reverb. On this video all of the effects added to the sound of the guitar without overpowering it. Great informative video and fantastic playing. Thank you sir.
Hey thanks for posting this , liked the fact that there was no unnecessary blah blah blah ! 👍
Can you adjust volume from the guitar or the Wood tone? Or only for effects? Thanks, great job 👍😊🎵🎼
Great video! Question: Does the extra X braces comes with the 3m tape and magnets?
Yes
does anyone know if there are any tabs for the interlude at 4:29?
Awesome demo! Does anyone know what song he's playing at 4:29? Sounds beautiful
Atomik WaffleZ That’s actually a musical interlude piece off of Pink Floyd The Wall album
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 thanks for clarifying! Sounds great! Looking to by myself one of these. You're one of the reasons! - also, do you know if there are any tabs or anywhere I could learn it?
Atomik WaffleZ it's called is there anybody out there by pink floyd
@@Magicalfluidprocess thanks man! Appreciate it
saw an ad, tried to find a good demonstration/ comparison video. this was perfect and EXACTLY what i was looking for! thank you!
Thank you! Yup, I did the same thing, that’s why I made this video.
Thank you for this update.
Cool.
Yes!!
Awesome demo! Does anyone know the song played at 6:40? I cannot for the life of me remember the name.
Thank you! That song is December by Collective Soul.
@@rickfoell-lasvegassingermu8344 Thank you!
One of the first people on UA-cam (even from seemingly professional studio musicians) to understand that it's NOT an amp (IE a powered speaker that plays from an outside sound-source). Rather as he explained: "it vibrates the back & the tonewoods of your guitar, which give you different effects. Delay, Tremolo, etc." There is a more detailed explanation to be said technically, but this is basically what's happening. And this is important to understand, because it's actually changing the CHARACTER of the guitar's sounds. In other words, not only are the strings creating the guitar sounds, but so is the vibrating membrane pressed against the guitar. I will be explaining this in detail on my UA-cam series, The Acoustic Rabbit Hole. One buyer on Amazon actually returned her amp, complaining that it wasn't "loud enough." SHE JUST DIDN"T UNDERSTAND, even giving it a thumbs-down! Great post here! (Also, great to see an American Flag here in knowledge that these units are made in Arizona, USA!). -- Cheers from The Acoustic Rabbit Hole in Bent, New Mexico.
Thank you so much for your comments! It’s very much appreciated! And btw, I was raised in Tucson and later Mesa for the first 20 years of my life, so it’s really nice to see a product made in AZ!
Just ordered mine and can’t wait! They have a bundle with a pickup for those who do not have electronics on their guitar
It’s Isack That’s great! They’ve obviously made some cool enhancements since I originally bought mine. Enjoy!
Hi rick.
Docota brokenarrow Runningwolf Hi!
Rick, your first few pieces you played - we are almost exactly the same guitarist! lol. That A major add 9 on the fifth fret modulating down to the major seventh, down to the minor ninth, I wrote that, hey! lol
